A string of clicks across the web last night led us to Tas-ka, a Dutch company that ships home goods around the world. We loved their site design; each landing page acts as an entryway, similar to what you'd find in a physical home. Their photographs, carefully composed but with just enough messiness to reflect real life, gave us lots of inspiration for our own landing strip...
A bench makes a great spot for collecting and sorting through the clutter that comes through the door. It also provides a natural place to line up shoes.
If you're a student or a magazine lover, a cabinet or bookshelf offers counter space for the books that come in and out of the apartment.
Small drawers are good places to keep keys and other loose items. Another option is a cabinet with doors (like the one shown in the top photo).
If you've got kids that run in and out of the back door, a chair can collect toys for later clean-up. It also doubles as extra seating when you need it.

Sorry to take this in the direction of the gutter, but am I the only one for whom the term "landing strip" has been forever tainted by the waxing industry?
Every time AT uses the term to describe the place to drop your keys and mail, my inner teenager gets the immature giggles.
Don't want to be grumpy, but that top photo really bothered me - since when is a pair of tennies on a cupboard a solution? Or an example of design? Put them (and the rest of your clutter that really belongs elsewhere) IN the cupboard, dammit!

I love everything about these photos. They have a carefree "lived in" quality, yet still portray beauty and style. I don't always put my tennis shoes in my closet right away as I should, and honestly, I don't care.
Since I got the puppy my shoes (and everything else) lives on any surface above 24".
Kudos to any furniture dealer who shows what their stuff looks like in "real life" settings!

I totally agree! With two bunnies who have (mostly) free run of the house, I often have immaculate floors and low tables and piles of stuff on the high surfaces.
