This painting studio in Amagansett, New York is a 840 square foot building on the lot of an existing home. To save cost and keep the structure simple and functional, architect Maziar Behrooz of Maziar Behrooz Architecture used 2 shipping containers as the jumping off point of the design.
The studio is open and receives a great deal of natural light due to large windows and the double-height portion of the space. In addition to studio space, the small building includes storage and a lounge area with views of the surrounding trees.

I like it! I would be interested to know how much it actually did cost per square foot to build - I wonder what the savings was, if any, over the same structure conventionally built.
What a glorious project. I like the uncompromising clarity of the design and the way it suits its function.

Can I get one shipped to me?
This is fantastic; elegant and discreet, and full of light. I regret watching all those episodes of Dexter now, as I could not bring myself to live in a shipping container. Dammit.
I love it. I definitely could live there. I don't see a bathroom or kitchen though and that would be a problem!
Gah. This gorgeous backyard studio is more than twice the size of my apartment. Somewhere on the path of life, I took a seriously wrong turn.
Oh my god. I would never, EVER live in a shipping container. I used to be into that, and thought it was a cool idea, until I started doing freight.
Oil, tons of pesticides, mold, fungicides. I don't care how much they claim to clean those things. They are seriously toxic.
@Chimpo : That's why you buy a new one.
: )
this shipping container looks nicer than the condo i just bought :(
seriously though, very clever.
WOW. I could live there.
WOW! I always wanted a seperate studio at my last place! I know I couldn't have afforded this particular one, but with the existing grades, I might have concocted something that worked! GREAT IDEA! Beautiful!
