Okay, so yes, they are extremely expensive. But these shelves, made out of single slab of pine tree and glass, are worth checking out for the beauty of the design.
We love the sharp combination of simplicity and style, rusticity and modernity, that these shelves embody. The natural beauty of the pine is showcased front and center, and seeing the full cross-section of the trunk is visually stunning, in our opinion. Pretty hard not to take for granted the natural resources used in this circumstance, no?

i don't care how visually stunning it is.. $12,500 is ludicrous.
$12,500? You're kidding me right?
wow -- it's absolutely stunning.
Of course, I'd need at least 6-8 of them for my books.
Total DIY.
(Where's my chainsaw and router?)
Gorgeous piece. Ridiculous price.
Gorgeous! But.... $12,500???? I think I'll just wait until I know someone hacking down a tree.
While beautiful this is totally obscene.
What a huge waste of material. Surely the wood in the shelf can be more efficiently used
My DIY cost (your mileage may vary):
Round trip to the Mennonite sawmill outside Kitchener, Ontario: $60
Big slab of waney ash, knotty pine, or Western red cedar, cut to order: $100
Custom-cut 1/4" or 1/2" tempered glass: $60
Silicone adhesive: $5
sandpaper, belt sander, router: no cost
Material: $225
Labor: ~ 5 hours
It looks like a great idea, but it would have been better if it were done more gracefully. Those glass shelves have not relationship to the slab whatsoever. It looks like they are just shaped and attached in a very thoughtless manner. Also I feel the designer could have addressed the slabs connection to the floor somehow. Simply leaning against a wall makes it look like an unfinished design, either that or the piece should be mounted on the wall.
TOTALLY DIY (and maybe my next project, hehe) BUT I would not use glass shelves whatsoever! IMHO, it cheapens the look. Gotta think hoe to make it stable though - leaning against a wall - baaaaaaad idea.
All the DIYers that have gotten fired up over this is why AT and its members rocks! Even if a post is about an item or service that is outrageously priced, people get creative and share their ideas in doing it for less. The idea sharing is powerful stuff!
get your glass shelves here. it wont be $12,500 (or even close)
