Singular Style: Inspirational House Tours from Men Living on Their Own

We have a lot of really phenomenal house tours, and love revisiting them through various lenses. Last week I almost incited a riot when featuring spaces from women who live alone (here’s that post and its very controversial title). Today’s post shines the spotlight on ten guys from last year, and their approach to decorating homes that are unequivocally theirs.

Here are ten favorites from the past year:

Dabito’s Modern Meets Classic Mix

I get inspiration from David Hockney’s Calfornia colors, Justina’s Jungalow, the Eames’ House living room, the desert, and, like Mondo from Project Runway, I love the beauty that you can find by mixing unexpected patterns, colors, and shapes.

2. Ross’s Greenwich Village Home:

I’m inspired by different hotels I go to, either for a drink or to stay. When a hotel is done right; you feel at home the minute you walk into the lobby.

Coppy Holzman surrounds himself with an extensive collection of books and eclectic art, making his Manhattan loft a true reflection of his creative passions.

Don’t apologize. Don’t be embarrassed of a single thing in your home, unless you yourself don’t like it anymore.

5. Adam’s Eclectic Vintage Bungalow:

[Adam’s] home is a cozy one bedroom with plenty of space to house his art and vintage treasures. With quite a collection of rotating furniture, small goods, and a house full of pets, this cozy spot keeps Adam happy and inspired.

6. Evan’s Modern & Cozy Manhattan Studio:

People in the blogosphere are doing some amazing things with their spaces, and it’s very inspiring to see other designers at work! I find a lot of inspiration from production design, too. All of Nancy Meyers’ films, The Kids Are All Right, The Talented Mr. Ripley, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Meryl Streep’s loft in The Hours, Colin Firth’s home in A Single Man and Kim Basinger’s bungalow in LA Confidential are a few that really stand out as influential moments for me.

7. Jesse’s Modern Bachelor Pad:

Your home is your sanctuary, so create a space that is comfortable and that you enjoy coming home to.

8. Tim’s Cabinet of Curiosities:

My aesthetics took an abrupt turn recently. The place use to be full of Victorian furniture with big heavy drapery and even more clutter, if you can imagine. That look had been part of my identity for as long as I can remember, and it was very hard to abandon, but a change was needed and I forged ahead through two near panic attacks during an editing session early in the process.

9. Jonathan’s Evolving West Coast Style:

My taste in interiors is always evolving, usually at the hands of creative friends. When I moved to California from New York City, I wanted a reset. Style-wise I was curious to advance from my Manhattan apartment, which was heavy, with dark grays and mid-century wood. I’d call [this new home] a reinterpretation of my swanky East Coast sensibility — a Santa Monica riff.

My style has drawn from Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé’s private apartments; Wim Crouwel posters; the ’90s; Hoefler & Frere-Jones typefaces; Gourmet magazine; Bedford Street; Nørrebro; designers Nick Olsen and Bill Brockschmidt; Grumpy Cat (my spirit animal); Apartment Therapy house tours; my very talented and creative friends: Kristy Schiro, Jane Jennings, and Lauren Jennings; and finally, my mother’s unwavering dedication to order and tidiness.
