When living in a smaller space, it can seem ridiculous to devote all that precious floor space to a bed. Why not make use of all that space with a storage bed? In many cases this can eliminate the need for a dresser entirely - freeing up even more precious real estate in the crowded bedroom. Here's a round-up of six favorite storage beds…
- Redin Park Storage Bed from Bassett has 6 drawers in its Cathedral walnut frame.
- Brownstone Campaign Storage Bed, available from Humble Abode, has a unique mix of wood, fabric, and leather.
- Design Within Reach's Matera Bed is just what you'd expect from DWR -- clean lines and beautiful detail.
- Queen Captain's Bed, available from Furniture From Home, is the most traditional bed in the lot. And with eight drawers, it also has the most storage capability.
- The Stratton Bed with Drawers, shown here with the Montgomery Upholstered Headboard, is just one of Pottery Barn's storage bed options.
- The lift-up frame on the Pivot Storage Bed from West Elm makes use of the space under the bed by lifting the mattress like a car hood. This is probably best done when no one is sleeping in the bed.

White Enamel Four-P...
My Eastern king storage bed is shaped most like the first one. I don't bump into stuff in the dark in the 10'X11' bedroom since the only other furniture is his night stand and my night table (with the dog bed laid beneath). There's just enough open floor space on each side to open the bed drawers fully. I recommend it.
You're kidding, right?
I don't care if it comes from Pottery Barn or West Elm. Everyone makes mistakes. And, the Queen Captain's Bed is beyond hideous.
No, I'm not kidding, and my matching storage headboard holds the bed linens.
I'm with Ms. Pea on that Captain's bed - yuck! The other options shown are much more attractive and when you have a small space, storage beds can get you as much storage as a 6-drawer dresser.
Captain's Bed is awful!
West Elm Bed doesn't look very practical--seems like a pain to lift the mattress to get to storage.
These are all expensive! I really like this storage bed--simple & clean king size storage bed for under $400! http://www.cymax.com/NoBot/Prepac-Manhattan-Full-Platform-Storage-Bed-EBD-5600-3.htm
A Container Store bamboo filebox makes a small wastepaper basket on the far side of his night stand. The furnishings form a capital T shape. Its top bar fills the wall opposite the passage and closet doors wall. Its perpendicular vertical bar represents the bed in the middle of the room, with open space on three sides. Everything can be reached and kept tidy easily. I recommend a storage bed for small bedrooms.
Holy TrailerPark!
That Captain's Bed is Craptastic!
Hey, if there's no room to build out, then build up--ever seen a yacht's built-ins? Also, a castered file cabinet in our bedroom closet holds my husband's underwear. There's just enough storage that our bedrooms's cozy, not crowded.
Does jamming stuff behind the bedskirt count as 'storage bed'? I keep my tools there: reciprocating saw, drill, palm sander, tile cutter, and various trays of hardware. Probably bad feng shui but at least it's to hand.
The captain's bed gave me an almost fatal Sawmill flashback.
I have a platform bed from Oysterbed. I'm fond of it, but I wouldn't call it stylish.
@Tricia Rose, Why not, with a regular bed you're not impeded by too-small drawers, so you can store the big stuff. I'm not a feng shui fan, but that wouldn't work for me anyway because I wouldn't want my dogs to get into sharp stuff.
My sister repurposes old dresser drawers by using them under her regular bed. They slide in and out fine without casters because her house has carpet. I've used plastic, stationary, pullout single file drawers under the guest room regular bed, concealed by a homemade bedspread arranged as a bed skirt.
I see all this as points along a spectrum. What I'm doing doesn't look anything like high style. However, it's looks even more different than crumpled clothing piled on the floor near the far end of the spectrum.
My bedroom has the best mattress I've ever owned. Falling asleep, my husband and I agree that it's the best place in the world for us to be. I'm not bothered that there'll always be room for improvement.
come on people! the captain's bed can't be THAT bad!! let me take a look... OMG NUKE IT FROM ORBIT! IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE!
What's with all the matching furniture? that's a big nono! Yeah, I know they're showroom pictures, but still!
no. 3 is pretty nice!! I'd love to have that one! It's a lot more subtle than those other wardrobes with mattresses on top ;-)
Aw, you guys are harsh. I like the Captain's bed. It reminds me of my Grandma June's house and all the different themed bedrooms.
Storage beds can be bulky and hard to move. Make sure you get one that comes apart easily. Mine separates into four boxes, each containing a drawer, and the headboard detaches. If the platform is one solid piece, moving it will be painful.
We have a lift bed similar to the last one pictured, but nicer in my opinion!
We love it for lots of reasons, mainly that we live in a climate that requires bulky winter coats, big boots mitts and touques, plus fleeces for fall, rain coats and boots for spring and a good selection for summer as well.
Big bonus, great hiding place for christmas gifts!
We don't store our everyday gear in there.

Though...that's just my opinion.
:/
I have that first bed, the one from Bassett. I LOVE it. It comes apart so it's relatively easy to move and the construction is wonderful.
I plan on buying this bed, hopefully soon!
