SKOY Cloths

We have a guilty confession to make: we have not yet fully completed our transition away from paper towels. We still use them, albeit as a last resort for spills and particularly terrible tasks, like cleaning cat vomit. This is why the SKOY cloth, a reusable, biodegradable cleaning cloth that hovers near the paper towel end of the spectrum without actually being one, appeals.

Made of cotton and cellulose pulp, SKOY cloths are absorbent and soft, and claim to take the place of 15 rolls of paper towels for every one. Interestingly, the company offers a subscription service where they'll mail you 8 cloths every three months, if that is any indication of comparable use.

These are great-I use them and love them. These things can really take a beating and still be in great shape. Definitely has helped cut down on paper towels, which my hyper-cleaning self would use constantly because sponges seemed dirty.

I completely understand the I-cant-quite-give-up-paper-towels-because-i-have-pets. I have 3 cats and a dog! But I have been able to make the transition to no paper towls. Grab the cat puke with a peice of paper you just threw in the recycle bin. Or a page from a magazine or a newspaper. It works just as well, and then you dont have to use your pretty cloth napkins to pick up vomit.

I was inspired by a friend who said her farming grandmother never bought sponges or paper towels. She would just cut up old clothes and use them. So now, so do I: I cut up old ragged t-shirts that, let's face it, not even the Salvation Army wants, and keep them in a wire basket in the bathroom closet. Cat puke, toilets, anything too grody to use a sponge on, I use a t-shirt rag and then just throw it away.

(I also use them for regular dusting and cleaning, and then wash and re-use them. When their time finally comes to take care of the cat puke or the toilet, I have no problem throwing them away.)
