Product: Slimkey V2 Moniter Stand
Rating: Strong Recommend*
If there's one thing we're obsessed with it is optimizing desk space. Our desk is long, but very shallow in depth, so our laptop + external monitor setup is always a work in progress, with the myriad of drives and other USB peripherals we're attaching/detaching regularly. The Slimkey V2 Monitor stand seems to have been constructed with users such as ourselves in mind, as it has helped us eke out a little bit more useable space, while adding a USB 2.0 hub too.
The Slimkey V2 is an improved update of the Lowkey Stand, designed specifically for iMac and Apple Cinema Display users. But even our clunky-design Dell monitor was nicely complemented by this sturdy powder coated aluminum stand (lipstick on a pig), providing us with space not only for our compact wireless keyboard, but also for our compact LaCie hard drive, both which slide easily underneath for an eye pleasing streamline appearance that blends well with Apple's industrial design.
The stand 18.5"(W) x 9"(D) x 1.1"(H) is rated for 35lbs of weight and it feels every bit capable of supporting that amount of stress. The stand is gently curved, thick metal with a center leg hidden underneath for support.
A welcomed bonus feature for a MacBook Pro user such as myself is the 4-port USB 2.0 hub situated in the right rear side of the stand; this frees up some of the inherent cable clutter using a laptop. Our only beef with this inclusion is related to the overall design: USB cables seem a little too visible from a neat-nik's perspective. But perhaps we just need more fashionable USB cables?
Overall, if you're an Apple user looking to streamline your setup and minimize footprint while maximizing utility, the Slimkey V2 Monitor Stand is a no-brainer accessory. Well constructed, in tune with Apple's industrial design, all with the additional features of a USB hub and a place to hide away your laptop, the Slimkey V2 is an elegant desktop companion.
Pros: Construction is excellent, the 4 port USB 2.0 helps clear clutter, creates usable space underneath
Cons: A little bit deep in depth for narrow desks; wish design hid USB ports
