What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? We have a corner apartment with windows on three sides; it gets incredible light, particularly in the afternoon. The French doors between the living room and the office add an airy feel that allows the light to flow through the apartment. The sunroom off the bedroom is a lovely urban retreat as well.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Our biggest challenge is integrating our somewhat eclectic tastes into something that looks pulled together and reflects our personalities. We both love art deco, craftsman, and mid-century classics — as well as textiles from trips abroad — finding ways to make them all work together requires imagination. Our second biggest challenge is our giant shedding husky — we’ve focused on materials that wear well and are fairly pet-friendly — or we would spend our entire lives vacuuming.

What? No picture of your giant shedding husky?! Even without the dog, I love your home. The warmth and light are very inviting. Excellent job on mixing your 2 distinct styles! Thumbs up!
Yay for DC! I love how warm and inviting your home feels. I think you've done a great job integrating styles, and it looks just right, rather than a museum exhibit of one time period.
I love this because it reminds me of my home, both the architecture and colors but a bit more traditionally furnished than mine. Nice job on creating a comfortable and inviting looking home.
I love the mix of modern and traditional - Good for you!
Your home is so warm and lovely - what beautiful light and great blend of styles. Love the vertical windows alongside your French doors. So when can I move in?
I wish I had 1000 feet to work with. Really great space.
This is incredible.
Bingo, I LOVE your curved Chesterfield sofa. Any chance you (or any other AT readers) can suggest the source for it, or for something like it, pref. cheap -- as in, $1,000 or less?
I've been looking for a sofa for when I move at the end of the month but haven't been able to find something I love -- and this seems perfect. I really shouldn't spend more than $300 for a sofa, meaning I should go with Craig's List (every couch I've ever had has been a Craig's List or thrift store fine), but I'm scared of NYC's growing bedbug infestation so used sofas feel too risky for me now.
If anyone knows of a sofa like the one above that is inexpensive yet sturdy and will hold up through heavy use, please let me know. Thanks!
Your space has a wonderful cohesive feel. Kudos!
I love your furniture- especially the combination of that gorgeous claw-foot table and the sinuous modern chairs. *sigh* So many curves. Beautiful!
Where are those awesome living room chairs from?!?! They are so cool.
Elegant! I love all the swooping lines.
The Chesterfield is absolutely stunning!
My father in the suburbs there has chairs like the rope ones but in leather (wonder if it's the same designer then?). Very inviting living room!
Some beautiful furniture pieces here, especially that sexy wooden modern chair. It all looks so warm and opulent!
STUNNING.
Thanks guys for all the wonderful feedback.
oakland - We tried to get the giant shedding husky (Bingo) in a picture but he kept sniffing the camera, getting up, or otherwise ruining the shot. He is clearly never going to be able to support us as a catalog model.
jplee - Thanks so much - we love that Chesterfield too - it was our first serious furniture purchase together. It is from Old Hickory Tannery. They aren't that cheap, unfortunately - we found a floor model locally and bargained down the price, which brought the price tag down significantly. (Chesterfields aren't that hard to find on Craigslist, but I understand the bedbug concern.)
JanelleT - The living room chairs are a recent acquisition - it was a leap of faith that they would work in that room. They are Wegner rope chairs (or in this case, vintage Romanian Wegner knock-offs). You can find them on Ebay - in fact there's an auction for a pair right here.
Thanks again everyone for the nice comments about our home. You are all invited to tea anytime.
Matilde - any chance you can share the paint colors? I love them.
Kathy
Kathy - The red is Benjamin Moore's Tawny Rose. The office (through the french doors) is BM's Northhampton Putty. (I can't recall the name of the grey in the bedroom, however.)
Wow I live in DC too and have a fairly similar looking apartment. What part of the city do you live in?
Elizcrtv - We are in Adams Morgan.
I love your taste, your apartment is beautiful.
I also love the layout too.
I'd love to see more.
Wow, this place is gorgeous. And so very different from the other entries! I love it!
interesting mix
The Chesterfield is a perfect addition to your beautiful home. Bingo is lucky to have such great place to live. Your fashion sense is only surpassed by your great eye for style. Absolutely love your place.
Love the rope chairs paired with the voluptuous leather couch. Two very different pieces that work together with great aplomb. Very, very nice. Love the cherner dining room chairs. Beautiful specimens. You have lovely furniture and you have used it all very well. Clearly a traditional aesthetic but enough modernity mixed about to indicate some intelligent folk live within. Nice digs Matilde.
Matilde...let's get to the important question: Does your building have any vacancies?
I love all the plants you have also.
1000 sq ft is fairly large to me... but these photos make it look so cozy. Well done!
You have inspired me! Thanks for sharing your home.
We are smack dab in the middle of combining two households into our new shared "together" space and have very similar issues - mix of art deco/mid-century, similar size space, etc. - in place of the giant husky we have two very shed-dy Australian Shepherds.
I love your eye for design and the amazing space you've created. I'm now inspired to continue tackling our own issues here. Thank you!
The rope chairs are fabulous! I am looking for something to put in a reading nook, and was wondering if you think those would work. I originally was thinking armchair, but am also a bit too afraid of NY's bedbug issues.
Your home is gorgeous! You obviously have great taste and great talent for creating your vision. Frankly, I'm a blues-and-greens-and-cool-colors-person but I can't stop looking at your home.
Beautiful!
You've done a great job of combining antiques and contemporary pieces.
Love that sofa!!! I love how everything goes well together. Just brilliant!
It's FAB. I'm envious of all your space. The only thing I would add would be a rug under the round table.
Good luck.
Gorgeous & Inviting. I love the warmth of color and the classic pieces.
Terrific home! I love the sofa and dining table.
Sublime!
ditto what glightly and h144 said!!
Mathilde -
I live in Petworth. I have a vintage Yugoslavian Wegner knockoff against the red walls of my apartment, near my vintage mission rocker and art deco china cabinet. It's a little crazy to me that we have so many similar elements in our homes. I hope you might become a finalist so we can see if any of the areas are similar since we obviously share a design aesthetic.
Good luck to you!
wow, i love the warmth of your home!
It's just beautiful - a warm, sumptuous, comfortable home, so very thoughtfuly put together. Bravo.
I am a newcomer to Apartment Therapy and about a year and a half too late to have cast a vote for your splendid place. I am about to make a move from Italy to the UK and was wondering how I would make all our Turkmen and Afghan rugs fit into our simple box-like flat. Your layering of the rugs has inspired me to do something similar. Your embrace of wood and the color red is reinforcement that I don't have to sacrifice these beautiful elements of our current decor for the sake of a more spacious look. Brilliant job.
PS: That Chesterfield is the most beautiful piece of furniture I have ever seen. Honestly.
I am just seeing this post for the first time, and I am completely in love with that sofa. Man is it ever beautiful. Wow. I think I need one in white leather desperately!
