Who Lives Here: Two: My husband (artist - his piece is in the fireplace) & graphic designer), me and our dog, Coco.
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Size: 1200 square feet
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? We recently remodeled and torn down two walls that enclosed our kitchen. With the new open floor plan, this makes a great entertaining space. We designed the layout of the kitchen with entertaining in mind - the island acts a buffet. Now we can interact with our guests and be part of the party whereas before, we were stuck behind a wall with everyone on the other side.
Favorite design element is the peace sign above our back door. It's a old acrylic sign from the 70s that was made to look like glass. It was my dad's. He passed away, but I see a reminder of him everyday.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The biggest challenge was trying to incorporate our existing furniture and art from pre-remodel into the new space. We really like the Mid-Century look and we added new vintage pieces (courtesy of Craigslist) that helped keep the room warm and tied everything together. Many of the sculpture pieces were made by our friend (who is my husband's business partner) and the graphic art in the dining area was painted my husband's art teacher from Art Center. Painting in the fireplace was done by my husband, Al.

Beautiful! I'd love to see a shot of the bedroom(s) and bath, too.
I love the paint colors on the walls, especially in the living area. Cool and warm at the same time!
Fantastic! The kitchen is gorgeous. From the cabinets, to the countertops and the wall color...even the calendar is cool.
fantastic kitchen, I understand you are still working on your space, put a bit more of your husbands art on the walls - they seem baren
this is a lovely home, and i know it's been discussed before, but since when is 3 bedroom, 1200 square feet small?
i'm much more inspired by the 600 square feet and under crowd on small cool 2009.
1200 square feet. i wish my apartment was that "small"
great kitchen, but where's the rest of the place?? also, get thee some artwork in your living room!! :)
gorgeous!
the kitchen is indeed beautiful... are you planning to continue that fabulous paint color beyond the cabinets into the dining area?
also, i'm curious about the placement of the couch - but i'm sure you already tried it facing the fireplace!
This is nice but it should have been a house tour, not "small cool." Not because it isn't small but because it doesn't involve much "cool" use of space. That kitchen is bigger than many I've seen in much larger homes!
Whether people like it or not, this is a valid size category in the contest! Good grief.
Size of home and whether it is considered "small" is definitely relative to the area of the country you are in. Fitting 3 bedrooms into 1200 sq ft is pretty tight quarters where I'm at in Florida. Beautiful place! I really appreciate the vintage details mixed with modern.
(Watch out! The green eyed envy set has descended.)
I think the place is fab though to borrow something from the first winner, P2, "you need a rug in that living room area."
Good Luck and ignore the jealous types.
WOW!! Everything is gorgeous!
IMHO, I think your hubby should create a nice piece of art to go "above" the fireplace ;)
5 thumbs up!!
Great place! I really love the kitchen. What is the color on the walls?
Beautiful. Where is the wine rack from?
thumbs up just so i can see more of the place...
The kitchen wall color is gorgeous. The peace sign is also my favorite.
i just can't give someone props when they live in 1200 sq feet with only one other person...
what a great place! love it.
Really lovely home, I love the choice of colours in general.
beautiful kitchen! love the cabinets, wall color, countertops, and genious use of space, including the washer/dryer tucked in back there. i think having a back door with the big window is great for light and opens up the space even more. living there must put you in a perpetual good mood!
Nicely done! So it isn't the smallest place out there but you did make great use of the space and with 3 bedrooms, it's not huge by any means.
I love the colors chosen and the fact that it's modern with lots of MCM elements to it.
I"m sure you are still working on the place but artwork ON the walls is what it needs to really help tie the room together, especially that blank wall in the living room w/ the sconces washing it w/ light.
Good luck
Nice way to mix your mcm furniture with warmer accents.
I'm jealous of your kitchen :)
very cool,
not very small.
Am I the only one still laughing places this large were allowed into the contest?
Your kitchen is beautiful...what kind of wood is that?
Very nice. Hard for me to think of it as small, though. Obviously, a compliment to how you've made it feel so airy.
Why do all of you who are apparently offended by this size category even look at these entries?
It has a lot of beautiful elements. I love the kitchen! Although I think the living room doesn't feel "done". It needs an area rug and artwork above the couch and/or fireplace.
As for the size, 1200 sq feet isn't that big. I live in a state where most apartments are over 900 sq ft and houses are abundant. Maybe those offended by the larger size requirement should be more open-minded to the rest of the world outside of major metropolitan areas such as NYC.
Lovely place!
Where did u get that coffee table and that bench hiding behind the couch? They look so homey!
I live in a 3 bedroom 1200 sq foot house, and it never would have occurred to me to enter this contest. I mean I love my home, but we don't have any space saving tricks, etc, cause we don't need them. Because it's just a normal-to-large sized house for two people (at least I always thought so...).
That said, I like this entry.
Actually, I'm looking at this again, and I think that the layout of the kitchen is wonky. The distance you would have to travel between the fridge/ sink and the stove seems like a lot, especially since you'd have to dodge an island.
Beautiful space and smartly designed, can you share where you purchased your couch?
Heather, I am not "offended" by this category. My house is 1200 square feet and I almost entered it in the contest this year. The only reason I didn't is that I didn't think it (yet) has enough storage and space-maximizing solutions that other people could draw inspiration from. I would count this house in the same category as mine. Small footprint, cool decor—but not "small, cool."
I also agree with PDX01 that the number of people living in the house should be a factor under consideration. 1200 square feet is a lot for two people who share a bedroom. My house is only two bedrooms but we have three of us living in it--me and my two teens, a boy and a girl. (Plus almost 200 pounds of dog.) Managing to carve out three separate bedroom-type spaces has been one of our biggest challenges.
Okay your kitchen is beautiful but come on... 5 pictures of the same 2 rooms? 1200 square feet is big enough to show us your bed & bath, maybe even a little hallway action. The first two pictures are exactly the same just a different angle, but it doesn't show us anything extra... i'd like to see the other side of your kitchen that is cut off in the last picture. I would give you a thumbs up but all I'm seeing is your kitchen and dining and that just isn't enough.
Nice Eames rockers, though I agree that your living room doesn't really feel finished. I think it's kinda fun and quirky to have your art in the fire place, but I do agree that it would be nice to have more above the fire place and above the couch... All I notice are the open walls. Even a small rug under the table would make it feel a little more cozy. But hey, that's just my opinion.
And as for everyone complaining that this isn't "small," Apartment Therapy is the one who tell us what "small" is... Not these guys. It's called Apartment Therapy but yet they still post HOUSES under tours... I don't agree with everything they do either but whatever. I love you anyway AT!
Really clean and fresh design, very simple & functional. I likey:)

Photos are gorgeous! House looks great! When can we stop by for dinner?
Absolutely incredible space. Colors are welcoming and calming. Great entertaining space. Clean, crisp look allows for the space to be "decorated" with personality of guests and occupants, it embraces an invitation-like atmosphere. There appears to be a feng shui element to the rooms that seems balanced and comforting. Fantastic job and good luck!!!!
What a fabulous pad! Makes me want to ditch my colonial TODAY.
wish my place looked like that! seems like a cozy little place to entertain in.
I really like the clock in the kitchen and I LOVE the peace sign too. Takes me back to my youth; hip huggers, bell bottoms and peace signs, man. It makes me want to watch Mod Squad! And you know what, if it's larger than teeny tiny that's okay. It's certainly not a McMansion by any means and I enjoy looking at well thought out design in all spaces, teeny, tiny, small and almost small! Cute place!! Thanks for sharing!
thanks for all the positive comments. The couch is from a store that is no longer in Hd buttercup in Culver City. The coffee table is a Craigslist find. The sideboard in dining area is an eBay win. The dining table is from ocmodern.net. The paint is Sherwon Williams. Kitchen is topiary green and the living room is chopsticks something. Thanks again for voting and commenting.
Where are the kitchen cabinets from? What kind of wood are they?
I would like to know about the chairs around the kitchen table. Just bought what look like the same ones in a thrift store (same back view and profile), but no labels on them. They have a slight "point" on the back - they are not totally rounded. Also, are they varnished, or just oiled? (Mine need a bit of TLC). Do you have a close up picture?
