What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The large bathroom and closets! It cracks me up because they are so disproportionately large. I love it though because I have all this space, it's like I don't know what to do with it! My bathroom has a full tub and a separate shower. There are two large closets and a "dressing area" complete with floor to ceiling built in cabinets and a vanity--yet such a small living area and no kitchen. The building is from the 20's and used to be a hotel, so I can only imagine how it originally looked.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Finding things the right size, without being custom made or expensive. Everything in here was found outside or bought on Craigslist for under $40. (yes EVERYTHING) This is my first place straight from college dorm so I came in only with a TV...there are only so many ways I can layout my furniture but its important to me that it feels like I have separate spaces. I don't want to watch TV from my bed, I don't want to fix dinner on my table. At the same time I want to be able to have overnight guests. The one arm couch was a godsend find that my former roommate spotted just minutes after it was dropped curbside (yes I originally lived in THIS apt with my best friend). The mini counter top I scored from my building's dumpster makes cooking possible (another unit's loss was my gain). And the bed situation – it's awesome – is a rollaway bed found via Craigslist that I fold right up when company is over or when I pop in a workout dvd!

How do you cook without a kitchen? Is there a small studio type place to cook?
I had lived even smaller, no bath in room. I can cook a great meal with a micro and electric fry pan. Thumbs up on this place
I really appreciate all the CL finds!
You did real good on such a tight budget!
Very nicely done and I lived in a place that had a "kitchen" of sorts in a space that was approx 22x12 Ft max without a bathroom, it was down the hall and was shared by 5 other similar units, the same for every floor, 5 total as my first Apt was originaly a hotel back in the teens before being converted in the 30's.
Essentially the kitchen took up 1/3 of the space near the window and included the one and only closet, a small sink, a free standing 20" Sunray gas stove and a fridge that was too tall for the long wall cabinet (the only built in cabinet at that) and thus blocked one door on one end and the radiator for the heat was behind it and rocked at clanked at night when on. It was so loud I had to turn it off and the place was painted in dreary bad shades of brown w/ beige carpeting and ugly flooring but hey, it was my first place for 6 months back in the mid 90's. :-)
This is nicely done and looks reasonably well put together for scoring stuff inexpensively through various means, such as off the curb.
Good job and a good start to living on your own.
So cute!
I love that, even being a small apartment, your home has distinct areas and several rooms. Nice bathroom! What do you use for a kitchen area?
