Small Cool 2009: Sarah's Jackson Heights Studio

Tiny Division #54

Who Lives Here: Sarah + Allen
Location: Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City
Size: 541 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I recently moved into a studio apartment with my boyfriend, Allen. He loves to mix drinks, but our small space is limited to have a big fancy bar table/storage. Allen added the glass bar shelves in the corner of the kitchen to draw attention to that area of the room. It comes with alternating color LED lights, which really stand out with dimmed lights and candles. This had become one of my favorite elements in our home. Now, we can live and entertain in style without having a big fancy bar.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The apartment is a 541 square foot alcove studio. The challenge for us was to furnish the limited space so we could have a dining area, entertainment area, sleeping area and my workspace. Rather than partition the space, we chose to leave it open to increase the flow. We used neutral colors contrasted with some dark brown furniture and window panels. Then I framed some artwork and photos and hung them where I felt they stood out. We prefer low-standing furniture so we purchased a sectional sofa, coffee table and bed frame, which stand low. In contrast, we decided to purchase a high table and bar stools for our dining needs because it feels more like its own space when elevated like that. As for decorative items we purchased accessories from Ikea, Urban Outfitters and Bed Bath & Beyond to bring in some color and fluff to our apartment. All in all, we are really happy with the way our apartment turned out. It has exceeded our expectations and feels like home.
