What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My favorite element of my small space is the ceiling height. My ceilings are 22 feet high, and have very interesting architectural elements to them (sky light, great moldings and interesting angles). In the small space it feels much larger because of the height of ceiling; I never feel "boxed" in. I also love that my space was used as a real working Carriage House in the 1920's. I enjoy the history and knowing that there were Horses and Carriages at one time in the place that I now live.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? As my space is a rental, I am not able to paint or choose my own permanent decor. Knowing that, I have to choose every piece of furniture or objet very carefully. I have to be insanely in love with everything I bring through my door (right down to paper towels and tooth paste-not a lot of storage for things I don’t love). In doing that my furnishings pull focus away from my plain white walls and tan carpet to showcase what I find to be truly beautiful. I also have an open floor plan bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room which can be a large problem in its self. I then had to choose furniture that looks good to the adjoining rooms and relates to one another in a great dialogue. Being a true Aries, we are big believers in texture in our environment and respond to that more than colors. So I have used lots of texture to unify all of my little spaces together to create a space that I truly enjoy.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love your bedside tables; where did you get them?
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! It amazes me that this is a rental. A truly lovely, comfortable, stunning home.
Wow - this is stunning. This might be my favorite thus far, and the fact that this contestant worked around rental restrictions to create such a beautiful, serene space.
beautiful place! it has a lot of class!
Wow nice! Mid-Century guy here. But I love it. Love the mix of natural rustic wood with traditional elements. Nice furniture placement also.
wonderful space. love the light, high ceilings and those pops of ocean blue sprinkled throughout.
love the place - I like that you have not necessarily gone for the usual suspects in decorating your apartment and that you have made it so inviting. Its inspiring to see someone go their own way so successfully.
I love it! Very inviting and cozy.
I didn't even notice that the walls were white as I looked through the pictures until I read your "info statement". That is a true testament to the textures and colors and pieces you have chosen. I absolutely love what you have created!
!!!
Waking up in that bright, gorgeous bedroom! What a dream!
You must be a designer! It's so beautifully pulled together. Well done.
And I can't believe this is a rental. I want to see what you do with something you OWN!
Scott - I love this. As an Aries, too, I looked at the photo and went "Ahhhhh".
Being a former Cols resident, I'm wondering if this is in the German Village area? Used to live down there and the challenges of historically built homes, especially as rentals, can be tough. Hats off to your choices!
You have some serious decorating skills. Fabulous!
Love the rustic elements mixed in with more traditional elegance. It's really beautiful!
Impressive. I wish I could see your kitchen. :)
Oh my goodness! This is gorgeous!
I LOVE everything you've done here :)
Wonderfully serene. And closet space, too!
my favorite so far
Thanks for all the nice comments, they really mean alot to me!! The bedside tables bases are a flea market find, then cut butcher block tops and stain them in warm brown tone. Thanks again for stopping by and viewing my little place
This is by far my favorite! It is refreshing to see this aesthetic featured amongst all the Mid-Century and modern spaces. Your place is just what this contest needed to spice things up. The architechtural details are amazing, obviously, but the textures you mixed together is alomst genius. I love it! Thanks for sharing this.
Love your use of the word dialogue, but even more so, that you actualized that statement in your choices of decor. I can actually hear the fresh conversation in my mind as your antique pieces give mentoring advice to nouveau sofa. Bravo Bravo.
I also live in a one room, 500SF flat. I know the design challenges, but love that you took the route of "maximalist" with the editing of a passionate collector.
Great job! Trés Trés Chic
This is totally stunning. You have truly great taste. Like other posters, I didn't even notice the white walls and tan carpet until I read your description. It's great to see such a well done, classic space featured here amidst all the usual-suspect MCM spaces.
Oh my God, your place is gorgeous! I LOVE everything you've done here. It's so elegant and bright and sophisticated but warm and light. Great "editing" and great choices of pieces...it really works well together and when I read in the blurb that it was all 'rental white and tan carpets' I actually had to go back and double-check because I just didn't get that impression. Thumbs up!
D-
I dont like style but distribution is perfect.
Bravo, Scott!
Your choices truly enhance the architecture, and isn’t this what great design is all about? You seem to have thought about the space as a whole and tied it all together beautifully without limiting yourself to one overt style. Congratulations!
i was too lazy to register in order to vote before this ; but I did it for your space...Gorgeoues!
Really stunning. Great job!
WOW! now this is a far cry from the Eastman dorm. Totally gorgeous!
looks like the perfect house to me... I can't understand why it hasn't received more votes!
How lovely. Furniture selection and placement combine to make such a harmonious space. You barely notice it's a studio.
I adore your space. The restrained color palette, the new traditional furnishings. It's just gorgeous! What a lovely place to live.
A great achievement given a rental. By FAR my favorite!
Have seen the space in person, I agree, it's perfection! If not the best, one of the best by far!
Excellent style and no tacky OSU gear in sight. ;) I still can't believe this is in Columbus.
I'd give you two thumbs up if I could.
This is gorge - I especially like the bedroom with that lovely high ceiling and skylight!
Beautiful. I love white walls and am always made fun for my house full of them!!! I will stive for the perfection, comfort and serenity that you have shown here. Thank you for the inspiration.
Restrained palette, carefully edited choices, interesting textures, varied proportions, and thoughtful relationships between elements ... a bravado showcase of concepts we can emulate regardless of our styles or home sizes. I'd move in immediately.
wow youre place is exactly my taste and style. well done
Your color palette and furniture placement give such a sense of space. The attention to detail is obvious. What a beautiful environment.
Love love love love love it! Automatic thumbs up!
Before I even look at the rest of the pictures I've fallen in love. Now to see the rest. Good luck.
I looks like a luxury hotel room. Its beautiful the color and the furniture. Very Well Done.
Absolutely beautiful.
Oh wow... nicely done!
My favorite so far. Love the calm, comfortable vibe.
Candice--believe it or not, there are people in Columbus that don't live and die for the Buckeyes and have a sense of style...jeez.
Impressive and thoughtful. You've achieved a luxe, pied a teir feel in a garret space: a true visual delight! What a wondeful space to live, relax and entertain. Bravo! P.S. when can I move it?
the warm pallete, scale of furnishings and variety of textures is so pleasing... so many good ideas... truly inspiring
I love it!!
In love!
This is very sophisticated and lovely!
I want to go to there.
This is redundant by now, but your home is absolutely lovely! It makes me want to redecorate my apartment. Great job!
Following up on earlier comment I made: I didn't notice it at first, because this apartment has great architectural detail.
The pheasant is a stroke of genius. Does he have a name?
Good lord, this place is glorious! What a serene and tasteful and comfortable environment.
Wowza!
LOVE
Masterful layering and handling of color. This is a standout.
Very smart.
Go C-bus! Since things are pretty cheap in Ohio, I bet this whole project was rather inexpensive. What an awesome apartment with excellent bones.
I don't like everything in your place (no thanks to the reproduction mission lamp and the rough-hewn table holding the candle sticks) but I can never so no to an aries so I'm giving you a thumbs up.
P.S. The space great is great. I like the tufted chairs, the couch and the stuffed pheasant!
Wow!!
this is a rental, seriously?? I didnt notice the tan carpeting until I read the writeup below the pictures. I mean, how??
Hot dog, we have a wiener.
this is so gorgeous!
i would love to move right in. color me jealous. :)
I have looked through your pictures so many times because they are just so stunning!
hubba hubba...
Your favorite element is also mine. Well done!!!
Thanks so much for the nice comments and the nice thumbs-up!! The Pheasant's name is Eli. I love all things from nature so when I saw him, I knew I had to have him fly and nest into my home. The Console table behind the sofa and coffee table are my own design. Found great pieces of wood that have been chewed up by bugs and weathered for years at my local Architectural Salvage yard, and ended up designing tables that fit what I wanted/needed exactly. Thanks again for visiting my space that I love so much. So thrilled that others find it interesting as well.
WOW. I love this space. Absolutely incredible.
It's not my style at all but I gave a vote because it's incredibly clean, well-kept, beautiful lines, great pieces, an interesting colour palette and a sophisticated layout. GREAT job. Wow.
so beauful, a jewel of class
Simply lovely.
Rarely do I click through but this stopped me in my tracks, I had to see more! Bellissimo!
Stunning. The console table slays me.
Perfection!
This is a fantastic space; it relaxes me just seeing the pictures. So great to see the strong, positive feedback on an apartment that is not filled with Eames, Ikea and DWR. Wonderful job.
Thanks to everyone and the nice comments. You are makin' my week-seriously!! To any Columbus fans, my place is in the Woodland Park neighborhood accost the street from Franklin Park Conservatory in downtown Columbus. Really nice area with restored older homes and great trees.
great space - so airy
Wow!
i don't know what everyone loves about this so much.... it looks straight out of pottery barn to me. i thought AT was about more original designs and ideas?
I love this, too. When I see pictures of homes using bright paint & accessories or painfully placed "arty" furniture, I sometimes cringe. I do appreciate originality, but sometimes it's not so original ofter all.
But, when I think of the kind of space I want to come home to every night after work when I'm tired, this is exactly the kind of space that comes to mind. It is so calming & peaceful. The light is wonderful. The selection of furnishings and accessories is thoughful, and nothing looks like it's been done for effect.
It's a very pleasing home.
I love you
Scott, it's absolutely gorgeous. The white walls and tan carpeting only serve to unify your design in a challenging open floor plan. I honestly see your pictures and can't wait to start editing in my own home. Your restraint in not compromising in what you bring into your home is enviable. The love and passion you have for each object and piece is evident.
PB should be so lucky as to have such a discriminating eye ;-).
As another Aries...I'd move in in a heartbeat!
My favorite so far. Stylish without being too "done."
happy meal sized McMansion? beige, beige, beige.
When can I move in?
wow stunning!
You can come to my house anytime and do a makeover...I love your syle...Congratulations on all your hard work...
It was a nice spot until I saw all of the photoshopped in items. Why go there?
I went back for a second look hoping the plant and candlesticks are real? Please tell me I'm wrong....
Beautiful space! Everything seems so carefully selected. You can really tell that you take pride in every piece you have chosen to bring in your home. Congrats!
Awesome! The lighting was perfect and your apartment really shows nicely in the photos. Love it.
Thanks for all the nice comments! No items are photo shopped….I won’t even pretend to be that technical. Candle sticks are cast iron (a material I am passionate about) with tree bark pillar candles. They have great weight and I like how important they look on that table. I actually watered all plants tonight. A finishing touch I do with all my plants is to cover the soil with moss. Inexpensive moss can be found and any garden supply store and it goes a long way. Soil is not that attractive and the moss adds more green to the plant and looks very polished and helps retain moisture. I also have started enjoying terrariums. (There is one on the coffee table) The tall glass sides of the container create an environment great for the small tender plants. Plus the plants look amazing under glass. Again, covering the soil with moss for that final touch. Thanks again for the nice comments, I am so flattered.
I have to say I am totally amazed at how clean and neat the space looks despite the heavy furniture and quite a bit of juxtapositions that you have going on. It looks like the product of a very mature taste, with very precise choices. Not my style at all and despite that I really like it. It's very challenging to create a clean, organized place with this kind of furniture. Great job. The console behind the sofa is a very, very beautiful object... where did you get it?
would love to see more of the kitchen and dining area! Beautiful space!!
I am the person who took the photos for Scott and I can assure you, the only "photoshopping" that was done to the photos was adjusting color and contrast. All items in the photos are exactly how they were at the time the photos were taken, noting added or retouched. Since there are multiple photos of different angles of a majority of the items in the room (candlesticks, planter, etc), I'm not sure how anyone could come to the conclusion they were photoshopped. I'll take the accusation as a compliment and so should Scott.
Wonderful space. Great to see inside another Woodland Park treasure right here in Columbus, Ohio!
Jeff on Hawthorne Park
Very fresh, and light. Would have liked to see what the kitchenette looked like though.
I love Eli and the "hare" pillow on the bed. It's a great clean, homey, yet sophisticated, gentle -feeling space. I'll vote for it!
This one got my thumb! A sophisticated, livable space.
What a beautiful living space - thumb's up from me!
Oooh, sooo beautiful. You've done a truly lovely job creating a serene space that manages to be romantic, fresh, island-esque, rustic, modern, and traditional all at once. I really like your coffee table and the way you use greenery in your home. I have a bench that is very similar to that coffee table and thing I might try something similar with a terrarium/vase type thing. Just beautiful and very inspiring.
Gorgeous. Love it!
Natural light coming from every which way! Total yums.
Truly exceptional!!!
Something fishy about at least (!) half of the comments and votes on this place....
...
...
Great space!
delicious. plain and simple.
Thanks to all who gave a nice “thumbs-up” I truly appreciate all the wonderful comments. Please check back in the next week or so, and we can track the progress of the next round. Again, thank you for even taking interest in my small space. I have always loved living here, and thrilled to the core to see that others might like it as well. I am overwhelmed by you all….Thank you!!
Beautiful home, love the sky light!
Saludos from PR ^_^
your skylight is a dream! i love the high ceilings!!
Great job Scott. Your stated objective is reflected in each piece and throughout the space. Well done.
great place-amazing light. You made neutral not boring- huzzah!
harmonious, well curated lovely. the bonus: it looks much more spacious than its 475. nicely done!
I am totally missing the "personal" in this home. It's fantastic and gorgeous for a magazine spread, but past that, it leaves me feeling hollow. Even mag images have a pair of beach sandals or an open book tossed in. However overstaged, I can appreciate the worn bluish chest and the fact that no pillows were chopped. Beautifully done, now let's take our shoes off and kick back.
Scott, hey man, this is Ryan - the guy who could not decide on a sofa. It's been a while since we talked. I love your place. You should come over and do my place!
1. Absolutely beautiful.
2. Nice to see a place with carpeting. I'm stuck with carpets and many places featured have lovely hardwoods.
3. Why no picture of the kitchen? Would like to see one, if available. Link?
clean & simple beauty, natural light is wonderful
Hey Scott,
I really love your house. It's really beautiful, but I have a couple of questions.
1. In your drawing of the floor plan I don't see any closets, but in the pictures there are several doors. Is there a floor plan that I could see? Or can you tell me what is behind those doors?
2. I would love to see a picture of your kitchen. How does it fit into your overall decor?
hey scott - fantastic place!! esp. like the plush throw in chocolate. nice touch. i can't believe your place doesn't have a million votes!! much love and good wishes from your favorite little store in corte madera.
This was one of my top favorites.
