What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? Surprisingly, the super-comfy full-sized bed plopped right in the middle of the room. We debated whether to go with a Murphy bed, sofabed, futon, roll-out mat and the like. But we spend a good 1/3 of our life in that thing (more when possible). So we opted for comfort. Instead of being a deal breaker for having parties, it's the ultimate barometer of hosting success. When we look across our cozy space and see friends sprawled across the bed, laughing and comfortable, enjoying food & drink, we know we made the right choice.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Bad bones: we weren't blessed with gorgeous woodwork, high ceilings or interesting architecture. Instead, our challenge was to take what looked like an average hotel room and turn it into a cozy, welcoming home. We overcame the industrial carpet, bland wall vinyl and boring fixtures with serious doses of personality. Our rule with anything that came home with us was that it had to be useful and beautiful. Thrift shop finds, family heirlooms, travel mementos and personal art & photos help make the space our own.

Totally not my style and yet, I love the colors and the placement of the furniture. Very cool!
Love it - definitely looks super comfy.
I love this; first one I've saved on Delicious!
i had planned on getting the same bed five years ago. decided i needed the space underneath for storage too much.
very cozy spot, and kudos for being able to share it with someone else.
I love it! It's colorful and welcoming and has very little clutter for such a small space.
I really like your sleeping/living solution with the bed front and center. I think it makes more sense than cramming a separate couch and bed into a tiny space.
i reeeeeeeeeeeeally love this.
SOOOO CUTE!!!
Cozy, colorful and looks very comfy- you did a great job!
i want to nap..in that bed!!
looks so comfy!
very nice. such a small place!
My kinda place. I could see myself having a blast here(if I knew you guys and hung out during parties, that is.)
Only question, when people are hanging out on your bed all the time, how do you keep a sense of it still being the "personal" place you sleep on? Do you put something down in incase people spill things and then take it off for bedtime?
Great job. Very cozy indeed. Love it.
:)
ooh...that looks so comfy... nice colour play as well
Haha hi guys! It's me, James. Your apartment looks better and better every time. Miss hanging out there, but I'll be sure to come back and see your NEW COUCH!
I love it! It's so sleek, colorful and comfortable!
I would love to know what yellow you used in your bathroom. We're trying to find a perfect shade, and I love yours! (or at least how it photographed)
Hello Dear Judy and Dear Mark, we are very happy to receive an email of you. Of course we have click for give you one point !!! The pictures are very nice. In french we said : Superbe Déco !!! Ouahouhhh ! We hope realy to see you in France or in United States as soon as possible. With all our love. Lydia and Anthony (the frenchies)...
If I knew these people (which I can I assure you, I do NOT), I would send my 3 boys and little girl to their apartment to jump on the bed and eat their food. And I suspect that the couple that lives here would have no problem with that. Their carefree and easygoing decorating style seems to indicate that about them - even though I have never, EVER spent time with them at Lake Tahoe.
Love the use of color, looks much bigger than 384 sq ft.
I love the colors you have chosen. Very nice as they are bright, spring like and work well against the white walls and such.
Your use of color is more or less how I approach color as well.
Nice job overall on the entire space and making the bed the "couch" as well as your sleeping apperatus is an excellent solution to small space living.
thumbs up. very attractive
those red tree lamps are very cool. and i like how the hodge podge furniture really works together in such a small space
Your colors are so brilliant and beautiful that I can almost taste them : )
What a lovely spot! How do you keep it so clutter-free? I'm unable in a 3-bedroom townhouse, which I only share with my Beautiful Border Collie called Babe.
Great use of color, love the efficient use of space, and I caught a glance of 1/2 of the Moo/Ju team. Not too shabby!!
Well Done--Enjoy...
your room is as beautiful as you two are.
where is the red branch lamp from?
Great room. Great people. It shows...seniority can't get you everything. --p.joy
now THIS is a good use of small space and creativity. I love it! I especially love the bed in the middle of the room, the large book case and your use of color in the bathroom.
Really enjoyable to look at!
What beautiful, bold, and happy use of color and space! There is an outstanding sense of design at work here. I love the artwork on the walls. Two pieces in particular intrigue me, but I can barely see them ...
Interesting & inviting, very genuine, very original.
Hey Guys!! love your place hope you get the couch too!! Lily
This is so cool. Really. This was the first home I saw in the entire contest that just made me smile.
hope you win!
Thanks for the kind feedback! I've been reading AT for years and never had the courage to post our home. It's an honor having such a design savvy group enjoy our space. Wish you could all fit in here!
Answers to some of your questions:
LadyJ = Our bed actually does have storage--two drawers on each side. That's where we keep our sleeping pillows, fresh linens, throw blankets. Got it at Gothic Cabinet Craft for under $300 (pine with birch veneer).
krpm 1 aka Kelly = When guests come over I usually throw something on the bed. I have fabric backed, plastic picnic table covers in fun colors and patterns from the dollar store (red/white gingham is a fave). And we put out sturdy trays for food & drinks. It ends up looking like a giant ottoman/chaise lounge. No major spill disasters so far!
kajr = The yellow in the bathroom is actually wall vinyl! It's a subtle vertical stripe of yellow/cream/orange. It gives the walls a nice, gentle texture and a bit of sheen. Can't remember the name but we'll try to look it up for ya.
topherburk = Surprisingly, the red lamp comes from a Daffy's in Queens, NY! There was a small crack in the base and I was able to get half the price knocked off. Which taught me that you can get a discount almost anywhere. =)
danlisab = Most of the artwork is either eBay finds, our own work or watercolors we commissioned from a favorite local artist friend.
Keep your questions and suggestions coming!
My favorite! <3
inviting, warm, unique --love it. <3
You have really made the most of a small area. Beautiful colors with so many cool accessories. Your design budget must keep you just above the poverty level. Hope that place is rent controlled!
Oh my gosh, looks like one of those magazine pictures. Looks great
Love that you found room for a quirky china cabinet in 384 sft.
I agree with your thoughts on the bed. It is never something I would have thought of on my own, but having it right in the middle of the room with a bright, fun bedspread makes the place feel so warm and cozy.
beautiful. i only wish i had skill with color like that.
You can also get that twig/coral lamp at LampsPlus, or at least you used to. I got gold ones (that I painted over) on clearance when they were switching out for that red version.
this place looks so cozy! I love the arm chairs.
m and j, its the best!
It is just amazing all you have done in such a small place. I have always loved the decoration concept, and without a doubt this is the kind a place you would enjoy living.
Excellent job.
Hmmmm what a wonderful space and the pictures do it a wonderful justice. Hope to sit on the bed someday soon.

So colorful. So cozy. So comfortable. and So cool
It looks so cozy... the colors are bright and looks so nice.
Looks like you have a beatiful life in there.
Thanks for all the kind comments.
FYI: The wallpaper in the bathroom is "Stria" in 'Harvest'. Same paper is in the kitchen but in 'Persimmon'.
The quirky china cabinet was one of my parents' first wedding presents, way back in 1957. It was already pretty old then. But it's solid as a rock. And full of childhood memories. We were determined to make it work and were delighted when it fit perfectly along the wall by the kitchen. Some things were just meant to be...
You have my vote!
Love it. Very organized and looks so cozy. I can't believe that kind of setting is possible with only 384 sq. ft. It shows like a MODEL.
Beautiful! I love it! I wish I have that! Excellent job!^__^

I love this. :) So colorful, reminds me of my bedroom back home!
this is great...so many tiny flats are supermodern, monochrome, minimalist. This looks like a great place to live and hang out. Well done.
Love the way you put this place together! Where did you get/what did you use for your Tv console & storage underneath? We also have a narrow living room & I have been looking for something like this!
