Who Lives Here: Ruben + 1 Location: Brickell Park — Miami, Florida Size: 900 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My favorite element of our small cool home is our black wall. Our black wall, rather than making the space feel smaller, actually give the space depth. It makes the furniture and art pop.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Our biggest challenge was storage. We only have one closet. We added a mirrored wall unit in the bedroom to provide more storage while not taking up too much visual space. In our living space we added a black glass wall unit to blend into the black wall.

Your balcony makes me swoon, and that bedroom is black & white done soo right!
Like this a lot--the shiny floors are great.
The black wall is nice, but I wouldn't pair it with a black rug, black coffee tables and black side tables and position a black armoire next to it. It overpowers the room. Or if I squint, all I see is the sofa and the multi-color art piece.
Thumbs up on everything else though!
Awesome home..I love the view, the dark/goth living space, the chandelier over the dining table. May I ask where you got those 2 lamps on either side of your couch?
Where is the bedding from? love, love, love!!
really lovin' the modern, edgy feel to this place. with all the dark it pulls in the rooms for intimacy. goes perfect with the shiny white floors.
where did you get those pillows on your sofa? looks like damien hirst?
Wow!
So much going on here. I like it. Certainly not my personal style, but it's so committed! The bathroom looks great - I like the lamp and the vanity - Feels like any other room, furnished and complete. And what a balcony! Great view.
So Glamourous - I love it all!

That's exactly what makes the room work so well.
All that other stuff fades away into the background so the important items - Sofa, artwork, lamps and accessories - are all you really see and the room appears larger for it.
If that wall were another color, those other things would be more visible and the space wouldn't have anywhere near the visual impact.
eek... very South Beach
This is a pretty sexy apartment. All very well thought out and loving the black wall.
The night shot from the balcony is stunning.
Wonderfully sophisticated space. I like.
It's a nice apartment (though not my style). But somehow I can't take seriously 900-sq-feet entries in a "small cool" contest. That is, unless the place serves a bunch of other, additional functions - like an art studio, in addition to living quarters, for instance, or a majorly equipped home office, where somebody actually does most of their work... and features some inventive ways of fitting all those additional functions into that space.
I guess it's because I live in a 750 sq.ft. apartment, and actually consider it a pretty large place!
That said, it's always interesting to see other people's apartments, thanks for sharing.
Very inspiring rooms. It's just the perfect combination of glamour and sophistication but with enough whimsy to make it feel like home. Great job! I wish my place could look like this!
Love love LOVE the art over the couch. Where is it from?
Amazing place...I absolutely love the blend of colors, it brings so much detail and life...the scenery/skyline is fantastic...I can just imagine what goes on in that balcony...candlelit dinners...voyeuristic indulgence of neighbors...sexual exploitation of partners...this...is truly a palace...
I agree with flipper that I have a hard time with the "small" 900 sq ft one-bedroom. Unless you have a whole family living in it. But I guess that's why there's multiple categories.
Regardless, there are so many elements of this apartment that I love. Especially the shot of the balcony.
thirding the sentiment that 900 sq. ft isn't small. but it's a great-looking 900 sq. ft!
No one has commented on the death's head cushions! That's the way to take the 'priss' out of a very traditional camelback sofa in a very contemporary (no, not 'modern') setting. Well done overall.
Black wall works great (reminds me of peaceful depth of the Mark Rothko exhibition at the National Gallery East Tower right now...all black chapel paintings!) but I agree with @scarlethue that I wouldn't pair it with the black rug. I also am having a problem with the chandelier over the dining table (it seems a little trad compared with the rest of the furnishings).
Man, 900 sq ft is definitely small to me. I like in a 1370 sq ft apartment and I can't wait until my house is finished being built so I can finally have some space! I couldn't stand it when I lived in 1000 sq ft apartment. I can see how single people do it, but I'm baffled at couples that live in 700 sq ft.
the black wall really makes the room feel so much deeper, and I love black anyway so I really feel like trying that out now... and I COVET that black Pax wardrobe!
What a BEAUTIFUL view!!! Tiny or not, this space is lovely!
Gorgeous! So dramatic and fun.
Since "small" is relative, and the entries are within accepted size guidelines, let's just give the "this doesn't seem small to me" comments a rest.
wow is great, so elegant!
oh god i love it, can i move in there? awesome. edgy and funky. LOVE the sofa pillows!
I am so jealous. It really isn't fair. You just have the eye! GORGEOUS! Everything in your house even the white gumboots make me LOVE this place!
I think this apartment is beautiful. But i really can't see myself giving it a thumbs up. My reasoning for this is that I can't really see anything in the rooms that say "Oh, that's a good idea, why didn't I think of that". I guess I am trying to look at the small cool contest as a way of rethinking the way we live in a small space and this one just reminds me of spending a few nights in a gorgeous hotel with a gorgeous view.
That washroom is AWESOME. Love the vibrant green lamp and green zebra skin rug. What a fun twist!
I have never had any desire to live in Miami... but I do now, as long as I can live there ;)
I do not like this place..but the skull cushions are cool.
perfect in every way. i've died and gone to Miami. thumbs up x 100
"...let's just give the "this doesn't seem small to me" comments a rest."
Good Comment, Heather!
Your balcony is flippin' amazing.
On picture #1 again: maybe a very low, long, modern sofa in stark, bright ass white. Cuz that tan, oversized, stuffed sofa is also killing me!
Otherwise the remaining pictures are very nice.
This is very glamorous, however, the tan sofa and dining room chairs don't work as well as a "bright" would, whether it be a bright white or a color. Failing that, more of a camel color would do it better justice. A nice feel to this place.
Beautiful. I would move in here in a second! Though I don't consider this small at all. (not being a hater, just sayin'!)
Lovely space. I love the invasion of colors behind the sofa! Well done. Sophisticated, elegant. A total inspiration. What a great way to use a small space - it feels luxurious and grand.
Oh I love love love the bedroom and bathroom! SO hot!
It looks great, and they wasy it was ecletically decorated the apartment gives a feeling of a larger unit, while it has enough touches to make it feel warm and cozy
Great taste and vision, wish I had seen it before. I could have taken many ideas from your apratment.
I am in LOVE with this apartment! Great work!
Love the black wall.... It is so refreshing to see somebody with enough guts to paint a wall black. Most would just run screaming out of fear. Your home is quite lovely, I would kill for such an outdoor space.
This home is Wow. I want to see more. Balcony is incredible. But the whole thing is really good.
Nice view!
If those skulls pillows didn't convince me to give a "thumbs up" then the pic of balcony sure did.
I agree with Heather77 about size issues.
The couch is great. Looks comfortable and stylish.
That is one GORGEOUS view! Love everything you have except the sofa and the bland bathroom walls. Thumbs up from me!
Your balcony is fab, but I found the rest of it a bit too over designed?
Or perhaps it just isn't my taste, like I find the floors way too shiny and not very inviting at all.
But it still looks like you put a lot of effort into your home which i can definitely appreciate.
As the owner of this apartment I feel compelled to say this:
1. The black wall is not painted. It's fabric. Who's landlord would let them paint a whole wall black? The fabric is attached to the wall very ingeniously as to not leave marks.
2. Inside that black cabinet in the dining room IS a home office. We turn the dining room table perpendicular to it and open the doors and voila - home office.
3. We're newlyweds. We furnished the whole aparment from scratch with wedding money. If I told you the budget you'd be amazed!
I echo others' comments that this is not my style; I also echo comments that speak to how well this style is executed here. The thorough attention to detail makes one small detail jump out: What's up with the dusty gray-green colors in the shower curtain pattern? The green of the rug and the lamp fight with it. I'm kind of surprised you haven't replaced it -- even a simple white-on-white curtain with rings in that same amazing green would make a big difference.
It's probably something you don't notice because you're there all the time. Maybe the photo colors are off a little. I'm sure you'll do something fabulous when you change it.
Verry innovative. Fabric wall? Very cool! I appreciate that this apartment is not cream and beige or white on white - so over that. This is refreshing. Nice to see someone out of the comfort box.
Love the boots as a flower vase and the trashcans as planters and the lamp and books in the bathroom! I love innovative and creative thinking.
You sure do get an A in the elegant category. Well done all around and from a development viewpoint, I like the materials used in the bathroom. Yeah, all that balcony needs is me and a martini.
Comment from the owner:
one more thing: We made the artwork above the sofa!
All anybody needs to say is: Wow! This place tells me the couple that lives there is young and trendy.
Just once I'd like to see a small cool contest devoid of all the "I don't consider this space small" comments. If it fits within the contest rules why shouldn't they enter? These comments don't add anything to the discussion.
By the way. I love the space.
Where did you find that black and white peacock stool in the bedroom? It is absolutely awesome!!!! I want one too!

I just didn't tell my landlord about my black painted wall. They never did find out. HaHa! Love this space, where did the green zebra rug come from? please tell. Also ditto on the "this isn't small" comments, enough, give it a rest.
i just have to say, YAY, MIAMI!!!! nice way to rep us here in south florida, ruben :) place looks great
best. art. ever.
love the chandelier, too!
very inspiring place - finally nice to see something other than 'simple and clean'. Finally someone who offers the world something other than beige and wight with mid-century furniture.
Very sexy. Darn yall for having the luxury of being able to come home to this wonderful apartment every night!
I see what others mean about the couch and dining tables. It's fine as is, but would pop more if it were all white.
It must be my monitor but the wall looks a really dark brown as opposed to black.
Stunning!
SEXY!
where is the green/white tiger print rug used in the bathroom from?! it's really cute

I had to look again...your house is the business...That bathroom is sick!
