Small Cool 2010: Liz & Mick's Comfortable Cozy

Little Division #23

Who Lives Here: Liz & Mick Location: Glover Park — Washington, DC Size: 610 square feet

What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Our bed! The mattress is the only piece of furniture that cost more than $150. I had it custom made and it was the best investment: it is incredibly comfortable and the flannel sheets and cable knit pillows give it a really cozy feel. We set up a projector screen the drops down right in front of the bed, so we love to watch movies before falling asleep. Plus, with the low basement ceilings and the black out blinds, we have been known to sleep until the middle of the afternoon!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The biggest challenge was definitely finding creative ways to add storage to the kitchen. When I moved in there was nothing but a fridge, stove, and sink in the kitchen. The only cabinet was the one under the sink. The other problem is that the kitchen wall across from the sink can't be drilled into (there is glass on the other side) and I didn't want to cover up the cool exposed brick. Luckily I found a white cabinet that sits on the floor and a wine rack that hangs from the ceiling, both on craigslist. I added hanging racks from IKEA to the far wall, which give us storage but doesn't block the fridge from opening. Mick installed shelves in the old window for dry food storage and I covered it up with a rolling blind. And we rounded it all off with a couple of baskets on top of the fridge.
