What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Light!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Making the most of the space while still making it feel open and light — I designed the sofa (with built-in magazine racks and cup holders) the bed (with built-in plasma TV), desk (with backlight, interchangeable colour accent) and the fireplace — all elements I am proud of and that make the most of the space!
The internet in general and sites like "Apartment Therapy" in particular are a constant source of ideas, to either buy, adapt, …
One of the biggest challenges I faced was an ugly iron roof below my window, which resulted in the sofa looking towards the water and the TV having to be mounted in the middle of the room on an electronic swing-out stand.

White Enamel Flatwa...
it's certainly interesting. feels very Kubrick to me!
This is really cool! Love it!
What an amazing place! Loads of stuff would only distract from that gorgeous view.
It's a lovely home, but I really can't take a 947-sq-ft ONE bedroom seriously as a small space, especially if only one person lives there. Several of the photos seem to be showcasing "space-saving" tricks, but I don't see the point of it. Plenty of room there.
Wow! Clean!! Does someone actually live here??
Awesome job!
nice. using the column as an art space is a good idea. why no coffee table though?
The space and view are great - I'd love to have that apartment...
...but the furnishings seem to be more about "Clever" than "Comfort".
It looks a little too hotel and unlived in for my taste, but have to love all that light.
love it! would love to get more info about the desk
That view is amazing. Very neat space.
I'm also curious about the desk. It's a wonderful shot of warmth in the space. As for whether 947 sq ft is small I think it looks so big precisely because of the streamlined furniture, space saving "tricks" and the extraordinary view.
palatial... love the kitchen
It's beautiful, relaxing, and ingenious.
very cool looking, but it does lack an owners personal style. it could be a hotel room, albiet a super cool/mod hotel room. the views are outstanding. the lighted desk would distract tv watching, do you leave that light on all the time?
um, wicked spacious bathroom. i swoon for that view...
That view is so perfect it hardly looks real! Jealous.
The view plus Canadian status sold me... and then I saw the kitchen! I agree it feels a little cold, but who cares. This place rules.
This couldn't be mistaken for anything other than a bachelor pad, from the couch with built-in cupholders to the bed that can only be approached from one side to the bathroom mirror that looks like a plasma TV.
And yet it's all very stylish. Well done!
P.S. it took me a very long time to work out what that glass-sided thing in the middle of the second picture was :)
The view was amazing, and I loved the pictures hung on what looked like a concrete post - great use of wall space.
I must admit i do find it a but unlived looking. Like I couldn't get a sense of you are, other than being an extremely neat person? This isn't a criticism though really as I know lots of people live like this and enjoy everything being meticulous.
It just seemed to not have that little bit of soul that I always look out for. But ultimately you have done a lot of work and it is really impressive
i understand the "unlived in" and "does not reflect a personality" comments, the entire place IS a reflection of me,my tastes in design,colour,materials...the frames on the walls have photos that I have taken on my travels,Dubai,London,New york and the images on the pillars are original studio promo shots sent out to cinemas in the 50's of Cary Grant,Audrey Hepburn and David Niven,my favorite actors...and there are also pictures from the 70's of my old car,a 1974 Jensen Interceptor.
so I can understand it looks very neat and clean, and once u add me to the pictures its FULL of personality...lol.
thanks for all the comments...we all share the same passion, but from different angle!..thats what makes us interesting.!..
Tristan
WOW...!
wow, the space and views are both amazing. i appreciate the layout and use of space so it remains uncluttered and airy. i like the built-ins on the sofa so you can avoid using a coffee table, and with the ottoman, you've got space to kick up your feet, so that's enough. sure, it's really, really clean, way cleaner than most of us would be able to maintain on a daily basis, so more power to you if you can maintain the place at that level of order on a consistent basis. it does feel a little cold, but that's really a question of taste. i like it, but i hear the comments about it feeling a little like a hotel, but at least it would be a well-designed and unique hotel, and not some crate and barrel/pottery barn hotel. :) maybe it also feels a little colder because the photos were taken to sell the place? good real estate photos always leave the impression of a blank slate, and that's evident here. but man, that view, c'est pas mal, pas mal du tout...
Love the view. For me, it would replace TV.
Nice view!
It's s beautiful space, but it just looks like a rich person's apartment to me. Feels cold, I guess I would have to know the person but it lacks the warmth and character of a "lived in" place, as others have already mentioned.
It does feel cold. The custom couch, etc. seem more "just because you can" not "because it's necessary to save space or make the place livable." I don't know. I don't think space-age gadget furniture in a relatively large space is the focus/essence of Small Cool.
Still, a very nice place.
Nice chic spot ! Love the fire - would love to add this to my loft space. Where can I get this?
*Envy* What a view!
Everything's too clean and clever for my taste, but looks nice, still. Great desk.
what a view!
i knew that sofa had to be custom made. that pull out tray and cup holder are too fabulous. any retail sofa i've ever seen with these features has that puffy baseball glove look that i so loathe.
thanks for the comments, the fireplace fire box comes from ecosmart, but I didnt like the surrounds so much so had my own made to match the desk with lucite sides and corian box(as its reasonably heat resistant)

I wish that I could live like this!
Your view is crazy beautiful and so serene.
Dig that crazy desk! Would love to hear more about that.
As soon as I saw the first image I nick-named it "fire and water". I think it has a kinda warmth that feels elemental. I love it. I would love to sit on that couch and look out at the water. Stunning.
I would love to live here. It looks much bigger than it is, and generally photos make places look smaller, so I bet it's even better in person. The most amazing thing is the view. A bed, a potty, and refrigerator would be all I needed--hehe.
why is it that the if the house tour doesn't have some quirky thrift store crap in it...people are quick to dislike it?
Not everyone decorates with used things. Some people have more expensive tastes.
The views are amazing! But I clicked through these pictures, and I also thought the house was staged. Even the open drawers are empty. It is gorgeous, I admit.
Tristan i adored your house. every corner is impressive in its own way and i like the hidden functionality of the furnitures. In my personal small cool contest, your house is the winner.
