Small Cool 2010: Ben's Creative Transformations

Tiny Division #13

Who Lives Here: Ben and his dog, Hinckley
Location: Portland, Maine
Size: 535 square feet

What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I like objects that are fun and playful. My kitchen counter, a piece of reclaimed bowling lane, is one of my favorites — it has divots in the wood where the bowling balls hit the floor. I love the creativity involved in transforming pieces that were designed for one use and 'repurposing' them into something new.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? My biggest challenge, living in a 535 square feet space, is editing. Not displaying everything you have is key. Displaying too much can make a great space or a unique collection into ugly clutter. I have favorite pieces stored under the bed, up high in my one 'true' closet, at my girlfriend's apartment, etc. I think it's important to periodically walk around my space with the goal of taking things away for awhile; to de-clutter. I certainly make as many donations to Goodwill as I do purchases.

Resources - craigslist.com, past employers Angela Adams and Objet Insolite, thrift stores, flea markets, a secrete barn in Central Maine, Velocityartanddesign.com, etc.
