Who Lives Here: Matthew, his partner and their two dogs: a Wheaton terrier and a miniature retriever. Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Size: 989 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My favorite part of our apartment is the 13-foot ceilings. We have a ton of large original art and if it were not for finding this apartment, we would have never been able to fit our ever-growing collection. Between the two of us, and the dogs, living in such a small space (with so much furniture) would be a little claustrophobic; but the high ceilings give us the breathing room we need and the elbowroom to feel comfortable.

Favorite element, continued: I honestly used to cringe when people walked in and commented first on the high ceilings and the marble fireplace (as they’re the two elements we didn’t bring to the party); but after living here for 6 months they have become my favorite too.
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Other then dealing with a 19 by 3 foot powder room, I would have to say the largest challenge was pairing down our lives in order to move here in the first place. Six months ago we moved from a large 4-bedroom house in south Philly to our current 1 bedroom apartment downtown. I’m a med student and thus on a tight budget, therefore we spent a long time collecting, visiting thrift shops, auction houses, and estate sales to find the perfect (and budget friendly) harmony, which reflected our likes and way of living. Moving here allowed us to concentrate our vision and forced us to decide what we really loved and used.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I live there! I'm sitting on that chair right now!
Is this an old post? It's telling me that thumbs up voting for this entry is closed.
Your living room is super cool! Not even close to my own aesthetic but wow, I can appreciate that! And your kitchen looks gorgeous, what I can see of it.
babyfish- thanks, I could have submitted 100 pictures but with a cut off of only 5 we had to be really selective
Love the lamp above the small dining table, where did you find that beauty?
Gor
geous.
I love the fireplace and that mirror is a beauty. The dark wood and black furniture and neutral walls are a handsome combo here.
Would of loved to seen the kitchen.
The bedroom could of been pulled together a bit more before photographing, not sure what is on the bed. Is that a throw or bedcover, it looks messy.
gmclean - it was an arco reproduction that I got at an auction outside of Philadelphia; however it didn't have a shade. I dont think anyone wanted to deal with it and I was able to win it for an unbeatable 2.50 cents. I searched high and low for a replacement shade and was able to find that the glass and chrome pendant light from west elm was able to be hacked on quite easily. The link for the pendant lamp is: http://www.westelm.com/products/a563/?pkey=cpendant-lamps-chandeliers
Loooooove your home! I love the mood you've created for your home and how everything flows so easily.
the place is great, the eames next to the sofa is simple but perfect placement.
obloha- when I was looking for the glass globe I have, I found that there was a company selling large acrylic domes for lighting in various sizes. I would start there. They may also do custom sizes.
Talk about good bones! Way cool home.
Just noticed you're using my photograph of the empire state building for the contest page: http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=view&id=759112 Cool!
finally, i actually know someone who has submitted a post.
I LOVE it. The neutral, restrained color scheme is fantastic (especially over the fireplace--black, metal, mirror--you could've strayed but you didn't). The whole place is very stylish and masculine. Great job.
Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments ... and the trow on the bed, its our ode to 'people actually live here- I think some places (when they ready for photograph) appear to sterile to live...... that and our puppy is pulling on the trow from stage right- nothing stays folded for long in our house.
FYI: it's WheatEn Terrier, not WheatOn Terrier. (I wouldn't own any other kind!)
I love the large print in the first picture -- I love large typography works.
One word...stunning! Definitely gets my vote!
I really like this place. I generally dont like full mantles, but I love what you did there. I actually also love the glass globe on the repro Archo lamp, I would replace the bulb with an antique style bulb so that there is not such a glare when you have it lit: http://houseofantiquehardware.com/s.nl/sc.9/category.33/.f
Two trends that are in their waning phase, globe collections and those vertical black and white train maps. I like them, but they're becoming a bit ubiquitous.
Where did you get the black and white location scroll?
I want to see more, (very curious of what you did with the looooooong powder room) your place is gorgeous!
Oh.
My.
Gosh.
Love love love it. REALLY beautiful. Thanks for posting a link to the pendant lamp - answering questions before I had to ask.
Nice place w/ great bones - Very tasteful.
Just noticed the kinetic sculpture on the table next to the rad chair in the bedroom. Gimmie Gimmie.
LOVE the sofa and chair. where are they from?
Oh my. You have the most impeccable taste. You made it to my top three favorite entries in an instant. I can't even begin to tell you what I love most about your place.
The fur throw on the bed. (I have a similar one in white, fake fur, and I love it so much that I use it instead of a blanket. Delicious.)
The tree branches. (Tell me more about those please? I'm dying to do something similar in my home as I want to bring a touch of nature indoors but don't like the fact that it's so easy to kill plants or flowers.)
The metal flower thing (?) you have on your mantelpiece. Where in the world did you get that? I need it.
The pendulum clock. This is exactly what is missing in my life. Again, where did you get it, please? (I'm going to cry if you say it's a craigslist or fleamarket find, this is exactly what is missing in my life.)
I looked at it again.
I love your green desk chair. And I didn't even NOTICE the pendulum clock. It is out of control. I am in love.
One of my absolute favorites, but have to say... with all the great cameras out there now, I do not understand this year's "trend" to murky, hazy, looks-humid-and-dusty-in-there shots (sorry Matthew, et al.)
Maybe it's the high pollen count.
Very nice. My compliments.
Where did you get the long train scroll /sign ?
Definitely lovely and full of interesting things.
I would like to see the super-long powder room, and the "open closet system."
took another look at the pictures... did I mention that I LOVE your layout and that I am too dying to see the open closet system (I'm highly intrigued by the way it's set up according to the floor plan, in my imagination it looks amazing) and the powder room? House tour, please!
The big scroll came from a vintage shop in Harrisburg, PA. called the 'Atomic Warehouse'. Its worth the trip-- truly amazing. 2 floors of a warehouse filled with well priced mid century and vintage stuff (mostly furniture). Its owned by a guy that uses way too many words like 'killer', 'dude', 'thats rad' (www.atomicwarehouse.com). I loved it.
The tree branches came from one of the big storms this winter, a tree fell two blocks down and we carried them home. We wanted something that was tall (and cheap) to fill some of the high vertical space. The one in the kitchen is anchored in a vintage ice bucket and filled with left over rock salt
The upright clock is vintage, It looks like a few of the early eames but its unmarked. We found it in a local auction in 3 pieces and I had to replace the movement, and refinish it a bit-- again it was an amazing deal that no one wanted to take on. The base has a lamp built in that shines up to a luminate the pendulum. I have to say its pretty neat.
We have 3 stacked ikea 'omar' wire shelf systems in the first part of the 'bowling alley' powder room and it offers tons of storage with a very narrow footprint. And the floating ikea 'stolmen' closet system offers us like 25 feet of hanging space in a small foot print. However, again, we could only send in 5 pictures so our range was limited. I think I was way over zealous, and took 190 photos that I paired down to the 5 (all with our new, albeit pretty bad digital camera)
oh and I found the iron tree sculpture on the fireplace in my parents shed and immediately stole it.
Wow, your parents had a fireplace in their shed? Swanky!
Sorry, can never resist a little "Fun with Sentence Structure." Too much Electric Company as a kid, maybe. :)
my favorite so far!
patrick (the other one): HEE!! I have a similar tendancy. I blame Reading Rainbow, though.
Please, it's totally Schoolhouse Rock all the way.
Yeah, I think we need a full tour. I really want to see that 19' x 3' bathroom. That's wild!
sdblondie and matt--
You are:
Awe>> <<some.
Awesome.
Oops. Visual word joke trumped by web coding weirdness.
I feel old!
Wow...Matt your place is wonderful.
I wish my parents had a shed filled with vintage artwork. :(
This one is a grower. The more I look the more I love it. I generally do not consider 900 -1000st ft small (or anything over 600 actually) and generally don't vote for them because I am so jealous but I did vote for this ;). I love the location scroll as someone referred to it. Mainly because Newry is so prominent. This home is so stylish.
Looks very homely! I'm loving th plant holder beside the fireplace, very unusual and looks vintage but I'm hoping it's not. Where did you purchase it from?
Where'd you come across that listing of railroad stations? I live in Martinsburg and I'd love to get my hands on something similar.
I'm pretty sure AngelaDee76 meant that with the silent "L". :)
i love your home. thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for all the great nods! I very much appreciate it!
Angela the planter is vintage --- however they show up a lot on ebay, look for 'bullet planter'. They also currently sell a version on DWR with a slightly different base.
you are the 2nd entry with a bus scroll used as art.
very nice!
thanks coletta, the scroll is actually 15 feet long, however we can only display 7 feet at a time
How lovely your home is! I love it!
I'm on the fence with this one, but on balance it's a thumbs up. It's saved by the little touches - the cool grandfather clock, the tartan upholstery on the bedroom chair, the wire sculpture, the branch on the desk and the understated antique (as opposed to vintage) pieces.
I hate it when your "scroll" is too long to display all at once.
*snicker*
I made juar unnder the wire & voted. Love you. Auntie P
Very nice space. Love the arrangement. Matt, where did you get the wall hanging/ poster of PA cities?
i wish i could keep voting for this one. i just love it!
Matt, is it a faux pas to ask what price range the rent falls into and what neighborhood you're in? My husband and I are looking to move to Philly next summer and I am trying to get ideas of where we should look for rentals and what price is reasonable for the area/place. If anyone's got some good resources for that, I would love some links!
Also, I forgot to mention that I think your apartment is spectacular!
I do love the look of your place!
