Who Lives Here: Laura & Anna + 2 cats Location: Fenway — Boston, Massachusetts Size: 380 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My iMac. It's a work computer (graphic design and photography), but also a full service entertainment center — we enjoy music, streaming TV and films through a combination of iTunes, Netflix and Hulu. Also, my partner Anna made the console desk it sits on to specifically fit the space — it's an IKEA hack.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Not having enough room for a real bedroom. The home has been through at least four furniture arrangements, the original of which included a bed and a loveseat, but that quickly became too crowded. So we gave up the bed in favor of a comfy sleeper sofa, and now we even have enough room to host out-of-town guests — as long as they don't mind all being in the same room together!

That's a lovely red in the kitchen.
the red is a daring and works. however, i find the living areas to be cluttered, esp. with all the hung artwork. also the swags and colored drapes don't work for me.
LOVE your red kitchen cabinets with the glass fronts. After reading some of the comments on other feeds, I'm really not sure if advice to the owner is welcome or not. I don't think baby blue looks swell next to fire engine red, I would paint the cabinet interiors and the adjacent walls super bright white... but that's just me. I would also move the sofa into the room a foot or so, I never like seeing a sofa smooshed against the wall... maybe get your lady to make a slim console to put behind it? Really dig the art collection in the living room. Well done : )
I like your living area, it looks so organized. Good job!
Lovely space!! Where is the floor lamp by the couch from? I really like it!
This is fantastic.
Am I missing something? I don't see a bed?
Love the kitchen cabinets.
Where in the world would you keep the out of town guests!? In the Kitchen!? I think you have done a good job with a very small space. You also have mastered the art of putting up art. Every time I try...it looks haphazard, and not the picture in my head.
I enjoying the red cabinets too - quite daring!
"Am I missing something? I don't see a bed?"
They use the sofabed.
"Where in the world would you keep the out of town guests!?"
Perhaps they have an AeroBed stashed in the closet?
there's a real quirky charm here.. best feature is the art arrangement over the sofabed. Me likey.
What is the area by the entrance used for...I'm confused about that small space. :)
I LOVE that you use your computer as an entertainment center (I do the exact same thing, am not a huge fan of TVs... I've been brought up without a TV and never saw the need to buy one because of the genius that is the internet.) Great space-saving idea too, most people waste so much precious space on huge entertainment centers when they could have it all in one comparatively small computer!
I also love that you're fellow sofa sleepers, which I think is the most sensible thing to do in a space this size... and I really like the way you hung your art above the sofa, I'm all for organized and linear and clean-lined.
I'm impressed, for sure. Plus, it actually looks like people live here. Nice work, ladies.
I love the IKEA-hack console. Are you taking commissions? (I'm seriously all thumbs when it comes to DIY.)
Loving the red kitchen!! It's bold, daring, passionate & loud - i have the same colour scheme in my kitchen :))
I live in a similar size apartment & it's quite cozy & excellent that you can house guests too!
I love your blindingly red kitchen. Just walk in there in the morning and I bet you never need coffee! (I'm sincere, btw)
Love the red also.
And am also a little confused about the last pic before the floor plan.
What is the name of your comfy sleeper sofa?
where is the cat litter(s) and cat 'feeding station' kept?
I love the dining nook!
Lovely place. Thanks for sharing.
Love all of it! The red in the kitchen is awesome!
I really like it. Like the red kitchen a lot its the perfect red for those cabinets.
But I also don't understand what the space in last picture is used for why is it blocked off from the rest of the living space (with what look like ikea curtains)? Is there something about that space you don't like to see from the living area? or something that that space is used for that requires the curtains? i'm very curious.
the only thing I don't like is the material around the stools underneath the table in pic 4. Makes them look messy and frumpy. I'd lose the fabric altogether but if there is some purpose to it-- i think it would look better without the pleats--pulling the material taugt would give them a more streamlined look.
LOVE the red kitchen (although I take that back if you painted over wood on the original top cabinets :-P). Definitely does not feel like a small space.
where you have the baguette and bench should be your bed area, and curtain off the opening to the kitchen, Then move your dinig table to outside the other kitchen entrance by the front door..get rid of the table and stools, This will be fab!!!!
yuk - 3 shots remind me of a kids room
Thank you everyone for the lovely comments. This is the “handy” half of the couple speaking. I am always impressed by the variety of opinions this site inspires!
To clear up the confusion expressed by a couple of you – the area by the entrance serves a couple of purposes – it’s a landing strip, dressing room, and craft room. It’s separated form the main living area by sliding panels because neither of us likes to stare at the entry door while in bed. This also provides virtual separation from the crafting clutter if it goes on longer than a day. The seemingly extraneous table unfolds width-wise and becomes a dining table for 6 or a sewing/painting surface. It’s pretty much the only piece of furniture we’ve hung onto for close to a decade, because it’s so versatile.
yvesy – the lamp is from IKEA, much like the rest of the apartment. It’s SAMTID, but they recently redesigned the metal parts to be in a chrome finish instead of powdered grey…
waterlily – it’s great to find like-minded no-TV and sofa-sleeping readers, most of our friends think we are weird☺
emmelemm – well, why, yes, I DO take commissions☺
sassydo - the sofa is TYLOSAND from IKEA. It’s all foam, and takes a mattress pad that is hidden in a closet by day.
rugbyroad – the kitty litter is in the weird hallway leading to the bathroom, and they get fed in the kitchen.
michpc – the cabinets have been painted over the original wood in crappy white at least 40 years ago, you can’t even see the wood detail anymore, so we definitely enhanced it. This is a rental, otherwise we would have just re-done the kitchen.
Thank you again for the attention, keep the commentary coming!
This feels so cozy and inviting! The red kitchen is divine & the fluffy kitty on the couch doesn't hurt!
Where did you get that lovely art on your wall? It is an inspiration! I love your arrangement!
I do like this, but I don't think you have the best layout with the space that you have.
Closing off that passage to the kitchen seems to be a bit odd.
And that shelf looks awkward in the doorway.
Also, why did you choose to curtain off your dining table/counter into your foyer? Confused.
Love the red and blue, and the sleeper sofa idea.
For anyone who commented on the art above the sofa - thank you! Those art pieces hold special significance for me. When I was a child, I spent countless hours in a puppet theatre where my parents worked, and the 3 large prints are posters from some of those productions, designed by a family friend. The 6 prints below are reproductions of early 20th century Russian adverts.
The art work is wonderful. I love the red. It looks happy and comfortable. Don't change anything.
I love that the posters have a personal connection. Great space!
We love you. Can we hire you to come tweak our700 square feet? We know how Laura loves Connecticut.
I bet you could even fit a mini goldendoodle in there.
i realize i'm way behind the times on this post but...
where's the sofa from? love the cushy look and higher arms.
