Who Lives Here: Sadina and her husband, Bob Location: Lincoln Park — Washington, DC Size: 825 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I love our kitchen! It's completely open to the living room, has a ton of working space, and is great for entertaining. We've been known to cover the whole peninsula in appetizers and goodies for our friends.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The biggest challenge was finding beautiful, comfortable and compact furniture for the living space. We wanted a lot of seating, since we entertain a lot, but we didn't want to clutter the space. We looked a lot of design magazines and websites for compact furniture ideas, and spent lots of Saturdays shopping! I think we got it just right.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I like.
Great counter stools in the kitchen. More info, please.
what is the color of paint in the lounge room....and the green paint???
I love the artwork above the couch. Where did you find it?
It's all quite tasteful...
...in a "Look what Crate and Barrel delivered today!" sorta way.
The green stools are from CB2. The green paint is 'dill pickle' from Benjamin Moore.
A lot of the artwork is from a gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You can check them out at http://www.lafontsee.us/.
Also, one of my friends pointed out that my husband Bob deserves a shout-out. Which he does. :)
please tell us where the furniture and the rug are from. :)
The rug is from homedecorators.com. The chairs are overstock.com. The couch and coffee table are C&B, as bepsf pointed out. The leather chair is from Hecht's. And the bed is from a local DC furniture store that's now out of business...
Sadina, ignore bepsf. Your place has a warm, welcoming look. You and Bob balanced line, color, pattern, and texture while keeping everything in scale. It looks like a great place to hang out!
Cute!
From someone who has gotten to hang out there, it's just as lovely and welcoming (maybe even more so) in person as in these photos! As are Sadina and husband, of course.
I agree with bepsf. It's lovely, but it looks like a model home. It's lacking a personal touch.
In other words, it's a nice start, but it needs some work to make it seem a little more homey.

You're welcome to disagree with my opinion -
- but to tell someone to ignore someone else's opinion is rude.
But bepsf, you don't find your opening salvo of "It's all quite tasteful...in a 'Look what Crate and Barrel delivered today!' sorta way." to be perceived by the homeowner as (slightly/equally/terribly) rude?
i loooove the bathroom sink! it looks like sea glass...
:)
It's a very lovely space, although I can see why some have commented about the catalog look of it due to the meticulous color coordination.
Looks very clean and orderly but I have to ask, "Why the 2 huge trash/recycle cans in the kitchen?" They are actually at the end of the breakfast bar and sneezing distance from the living room. I understand it's a small space-I get it.
But why do people like to put their garbage bins on display?!
I have never understood this. I know people who do it, and the cans are NEVER tidy. Trash and yuck are always spilling out of them. I grew up in a home (as did my husband) where the trash can is concealed under the kitchen sink.
I feel the same way with the toilet lid. (Not in this home.) It has a lid for a reason. Close it. Why would you want to look into the toilet every time you walk by the bathroom or go in to just freshen up. Yuck.
my only suggestion was going to be to put the trash cans under the sink. you will have to take your trash out more often, since the cans will be smaller...but that is so much better than looking at them everyday!
i HATE seeing trash cans!
What is the paint color in the bedroom? I love it.
I appreciate all the feedback - good and less good. :)
This is our fourth stab at a very small place (and the first one over 600 sf) and we've struggled with clutter in the past. That makes me sound like I'm introducing myself at Clutter Anonymous. But I have grown to feel strongly that nothing makes a space feel small like too much stuff. I feel like that's where some of the comments about it being impersonal might stem from. We chose to have a few things we love showcased - the artwork, the bust in the living room that we found at a little gallery in Brugges, our green stools, fresh flowers. And our food when we're throwing a party.
@ elankat - your comment about color coordination does ring true. When choosing the rug in the living room, I was excited to find one with so many colors, which meant that everything would work in that space. In the other spaces, we went bold on the walls - since we went with the mocha color in the living room, I wanted to have more colorful accessories, to be a little more playful with color. I'm sad you think I missed the mark.
@ burnttoast - I do share your toilet bowl aversion, and would love to have a pantry or some other space where I could hide the garbage and recycling. The under the sink option just doesn't work for us - if you notice in the bathroom, the sink there has only two drawers, and so the only spot for our cleaning supplies are under the kitchen sink. But I promise we don't let the garbage or recycling overflow. Pinky swear.
All: while I've got your attention, we're thinking about replacing the cream chairs in the living room with these. Thoughts? http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/printable/product/standard.do?productGroup=19305&articleNumber=965458&shippingMethod=INH&prop1=Living Spaces&prop2=Living Spaces%3AChairs&prop3=Living Spaces%3AChairs%3AGigi Chair&prop4=Living Spaces%3AChairs%3AGigi Chair
My link didn't work. We're thinking of the Gigi in maize.

@ clampers, I think the bedroom color is called "Whipple Blue." Benjamin Moore. I'm glad you like it! I grew up in Holland, Michigan, and the bright blue and white combination is very dutch and very prominent in pottery, plates, etc. I've always loved the combination, and love it in the bedroom.
Your place is very attractive- I think that switching out the cream chairs for the R&B chairs would be a good move though. While lovely, I think that the cream chairs are a tad too tall/big for the space and perhaps a little too formal?
We've started to think the cream chairs do feel too formal as well. Our home is of course - like everyone's - a work in progress.

Where did I say you missed the mark? I simply said that I could see why some were making the catalog comment. I don't consider meticulous color coordination a bad thing. I said it was lovely. No need to be defensive or attribute comments that I clearly did not make. :)
@ elenkat - I was more defensive than I realized I was being. Thanks for clarifying. :)
Man. My current home is severely, severely lacking in natural light, which drives me absolutely batty. While this entry is very nice, the lack of light is the most noticeable characteristic to me, when compared with the other entries, which is a shame.
"@ elenkat - I was more defensive than I realized I was being. Thanks for clarifying. :)"
No problem. Personally, I don't understand why people take catalog comments as criticism anyhow. If someone said that to me, I'd be over the top happy because it would mean I have a beautifully designed space that's well edited and carefully thought out with the details. Needless to say, no one would EVER say that about my messy home! ;)
Beautiful. Love the art. Love the open kitchen.
I commented before I read the comments. I think your color choices, and art show a lot of character. Your home is lovely. And I adore lack of clutter. Thumb's up.
I think your place is beautiful!
Love the kitchen; seems so practical with a lot of working space. I like the sink in the bathroom ( material and color ). Actually I generally like colors at your place :)
I would really like to see more photos of your apartment!
Thumb's up!
Hi Sadina,
Great place! I live near you (NE DC near H Street) and am currently remodeling my petite galley rowhouse kitchen. Do you have any photos that show how you're storing garbage under your sink?
Thanks a lot
