Who Lives Here: Amy (and her plants) Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 460 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Despite its size, I secretly love my tiny bed nook. I downsized to a twin bed that fits into one half of my long closet. I used to want my bed in a closet when I was young and it still holds the appeal of a secret hiding- space. Even though it is a studio, the sleeping space is separated from the larger room, which is key for me.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? I began with an abundance of objects to display and limited places to put everything. With one large open space, I needed to divide it up for different uses, without feeling confined or cluttered. I utilized two book shelves with open compartments that worked to separate the space while still allowing the sunlight to shine through and gave me ample room to exhibit my books, pottery, plants, and bric-a-brac. Most of the furnishings in my apartment moved with me from Seattle where I lived two blocks from the best thrift store ever. Yard sales were also a fantastic resource.

cute apartment and the bookcases are always a good way to divide space and give you storage.
The picture of the mirror was a good call to see the sections of the the two spaces, due to the limited number of photos you can submit.
Those bookcases are chopping up an already small space -
- and the late afternoon daylight & dull walls are making everything appear so old & depressing.
Also: Your plate collection wants to be all together and hung lower on the walls - not up high and spread between kitchen and dining area...
Perhaps if the space were opened up, some fresh paint and bright curtains would make the place cheerier?
LOVE the bed in the closet (seems it would be a pain to make the bed, but whatever). I like the idea of a 'hidey-hole' bed too. Creative solution to a studio apartment, where usually you walk in and there's a big bed right in the middle.
Aaaand... I don't think the bookshelves chop up space. They do help create an illusion of two rooms instead of one big one. I'd think someone living in a studio would like the division.
I can see the argument of afternoon light being dreary, but I think it lends more of a tranquil effect to the space. I can imagine a lot of creativity and work getting done here!
the function of the bookshelf is also out of necissity to store things on. she mentioned like having sepearte spaces (like for sleeping) and i would imagine she likes the seperation that the cases provide as well.
this is a cute idea and cute apt.
aw, I wanna live here!
I would have liked to see more of the bed nook, as stated in the title.
so cute! where is this best thrift store in seattle???
I don't see dreary at all! This space has style but also feels home-y and loved (a feeling that is sometimes lacking on this site!). Aside from the, er, logistics of a twin bed in a closet ;) I would love to be in this apartment!
Cute. Looks like you have nice punches of color but the pictures didn't really bring it out. I agree with the plate comment. I also think scraggly houseplants make a space look farty.
absolutely adorable!
great job; i love the use of the bookshelves! looove the furniture
Thumb's up. Very pleasing aesthetic. I want the blue vase on your dining table.
Second look. Also love the low hanging piece of art over the table. This is genius. You want to look at art while seated. Also love the photo taken through a window (?).
I love the "lazy" afternoon light in the pictures. It's definitely different, but unlike a few entries, I still feel like you can see everything and get a sense of the colors.
I love your red desk surface - such a nice touch.
And yes, pray tell, what is the best thrift store in Seattle?
I love the lighting of the pictures. Not dreary.... more like airy. Very cute, you did well with the amount of space to work with. I also love the orange chair in the mirror reflection. The bookshelves really do a wonderful job of seperating living space from sleeping space.
jettsam
LOL! How do scraggly houseplants make a place look farty? Love the adjective though. Not sure how I would use it. "Mom that couch looks a bit farty don't you think?"
Lovely place. I've been saying recently that a bedroom does not need to be large, as you only sleep in there, it's your living that needs the space.
I've learned this the hard way, I have a big bedroom with a lot of useless space. And a frustratingly small living area.
Is that a plant in a Catherine Holm bowl?
Very nice space, and photos.
This is cute! I'd love to try a collection of plates on the wall like the one in the kitchen (and above the table). They're perfect for this space!
I'd love to *see* the closet-turned-bedroom, though.
If you title the post Bed Nook, it seems like you should include a photo of the bed nook, doesn't it??
I like it - there's something indefinable about it that makes it as cute as a button without being twee. Well done and thumbs up.
Amy, I luuurvvveee it :) But I do agree that we should see the bed nook! Love the tile in the bathroom & you're so lucky that your bathrooms so big! I was lookign at the floor plan and I was like shesh no fair. The apartment I'm moving into is great but the bathrooms kind of like this. Walk in, toilette to left, sink to right, tub in front. Thats it. There is zero moving space.
Bepsf, this is the second time now I've noticed you commented something really negative about someones apartment. The last time you were telling the other person how the layout should be. I understand that you disagree with certain aspects of the space, but calling an apartment depressing is just mean. If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all.
I like the way that Amy has placed her bookshelves in a small space it is important to differentiate areas.
@manaynay: I'm hoping that Amy's an AT regular and understands that that's just sort of bepsf's unvarnished style. I thought "ouch," then saw the username, "that explains it," and moved on. Heh.
This place is so homey. I hate to say "humble," because it sounds like a slam, but I really don't mean it that way. I also hate to say "it reminds me of the teeny apartment my mom and I had when I was wee," because that sounds like I'm comparing Amy's style to my mom's, which is also not the case. I am having both homey nostalgia and difficulty with articulation! I can't help but love places that are a little less polished, a little less carefully curated, a little less designed, full of famous, expensive pieces. Those places are also nice, but I like the balance Amy's place provides and am glad there's room for both in SC.
Wow. Such a cool use of space. And I love the idea of crawling in the dark closet for sleeping through the Minnesota winter! Like a warm cave. . But even more inspiring is the fact that you've managed to create an actual space for entertaining in a STUDIO. Yay!
Love the bathroom...dreams of Tuscany.
@foxysyd...make an attempt to switch the rooms. I currently have my dining room where the living room should be and vice versa. If it doesn't work, just move the stuff back!
The bathroom and kitchen are darling. I love the bathroom mirror.
Love all the vintage finds!
Thanks everyone for your comments. They are truly appreciated. I tried to get a picture that reflected the coziness of the bed nook but it just wasn't working; especially to show it in relation to the rest of the apt so I settled with the peak that you get in the mirror. It's the absence of the bed in the middle of my LR that makes the studio work for me. (Oh, and AT names the entries)
My huge closet is also a necessity because I work from home so being able to store a project when I am not working on it is essential.
The fiberglass chair/stool, pink desk, black Thonet chair, and teak drawer file set were all finds at the thrift store in Seattle. How about this? I will reveal its identity if I happen to make it into the semi-finalist round.
Your living space is just adorable! Though the square footage is small, I really adore all the individual "rooms" and closets. Very intriguing. That's what I love about old homes and buildings. And, all your unique pieces make it a very personalized space that defines who you are. (Though I don't know who you are:)
My only suggestion would be a few "larger" pictures. Large pieces sometimes make small spaces appear larger. Two examples would be above your couch and above your kitchen/dining table. Though you have some cute artwork and plates already in those spaces, I think a large painting/artwork would really make it pop.
P.S. I forgot to mention that you did a great job finding and picking out all your art and furniture. Especially love your kitchen/dining table and chairs!
