What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? It's hard to decide between the high ceilings, the brick wall, the direct sunlight, and things I've made myself like the Jean Pelle designed bubble chandelier — but I would have to say my favorite part is actually the fact that our kitchen and bathroom HAVEN'T been renovated since the 60's or 70's. I've grown quite fond of our funky retro kitchen and yellow tile and fixture bathroom.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Uhh, besides moving a sleeper sofa up to the 5th floor of a walk-up…having the cash, of course, to get what we really want. We moved in together with what we both had accumulated during grad school, subtracting and adding a few things we could afford at the time. That's why our place is a bit of an IKEA-fest, supplemented by craigslist and a friend's chair that we are babysitting while they are across the world. So while we slowly upgrade to higher quality design and cooler vintage pieces, we just try to minimize the ugliness of some things — like the sofa (free on craigslist!)

White Enamel Flatwa...
Wow, you have the best of all worlds here. Your ceilings, brick walls, and yes, virgin kitchen and bathroom make this one of my new favorites! Great home!
I find myself wanting to walk right into your tiny kitchen and cook something.
I completely forgot what category I was looking at...feels like a lot of different spaces.
UWS!
feels larger...looks incredible!
I like your description; your place is a work-in-progress and you're waiting to upgrade pieces! Cool! What I like are the blue and green accents, the brick wall of course, monochrome elements above the couch and in the pillows, and the put-together bedroom. I love your place!
Damn son. This is the hipsteriest hipster pad that hath ever been hipstered. That not necessarily a criticism, just, well, hat's off! I'd love to stop by and knock back a cold PBR while listening to Animal Collective on vinyl with you. It's just that kind of place, y'know.
(For the record, thumbs up.)
I like it that your furniture's from various places and are not expensive pieces. Yet, they all look pretty well put together, all exuding warmth and coziness. Love the brick wall too!
i love it. plain and simple.
thank you :)
That exposed brick is so sexy. Love it. Totally digging the mustache key hook. Bedroom is a little blah though :/ Some eye catching throw pillows would help.
And yet, I don't think we get to see this chandelier? Tease!
Haha, mustache key-holder. ♥ Though it sort of begs the question, why so many (sets of) keys?
What is the white thing on the wall below that, outside of your bathroom? Storage (hats and gloves)? Fold-down shelving? Also, where'd you get that red desk light? :O
So... ppl who keep their bikes on their ceilings (in their bedrooms, no less) do you not use them to commute regularly? Or if you do, isn't it a huge hassle to put them up all the time? Or are they only hanging out there for the photo shoot? (I keep mine, upright, on the radiator cover for the 12' radiator in the living, right by the exit. And it's actually still a hassle, since it would be so much more convenient if the door opened the other way....)
craigslist/ikea are two places working stylish folks utilize for furnishings and home decor, and aint nuthin wrong with that!
May I ask, what are those hooks you used for your bike? I need something like that for my bike. Thanks.
P.S. I love your mustache! Also, love the red tile on your kitchen floor.
I've never seen a 1 bedroom this small before, it's impressive. I'm giving this a thumbs up because though it's not how I think to decorate, I think it's incredibly successful at the chosen aesthetic. It feels like such a homey spot that I'd love to hang out with friends. So kudos!
*in the living room, that is.
I really like this, once I managed to get past my first impulse to set the couch on fire (sorry!). But thumbs up for everything else, and I appreciate the resourcefulness on show here.
I agree with Juliet, please burn that couch -- it's all kinds of ugly. Love the rest of the place though.
This place looks so much bigger than it is!
Thumbs up for you!!! Very nice, so cozy, great!
Thumbs up! Love the bathroom tiles and the kitchen. Very cool ...hope you get a decent sofa soon : ) one of my favorite posts, thanks for sharing!
Another vote for "what are the white things under the mustache key rack?"
That floor plan rules. Best yet, and there have been several really good ones.
Great home. I also love the brickwall and the mustache key rack.
Concerning the "white things"people - do you mean the shoe storage? That is Ikea ("Trones").
Can we please get higher-quality photography? The over-processed HDR look is so mid-noughties it makes me nauseous.
I love your kitchen and bathroom - totally agree it's fab that they were never remodeled in the 80's!
I adore your kitchen and I can't believe you made the bubble
chandelier! Good job you guys!
All kids of Awesome! I love your space. It does not (by any means) look nearly as tiny as the square footage you've listed it under. Way to go for making such a small space seem so spacious! (and nice to look at, too!)
Do you get to use the fireplace, or is it more just a space for storing books etc.?
Wow - I thought my building was the only one crazy enough to make a one-bedroom apartment under 400 sq. ft. This is almost identical to my floor plan, and it's nice to see how you've arranged everything - it looks great!
How did you hang your bike? I love that you were able to find a space for it and I have a similar problem!
I must have that mustache key holder. Where did you get it???
I love this! I know some people are ragging on your sofa but as someone who had to deal with a not so fabulous sofa until I was able to save money for the sofa I really wanted, please remember like Annie & Paul said, its all a work of progress (plus although not pleasing to look at it, it sure does look comfortable!). Great job, those brick walls are such a bonus!
I love that exposed brick in the kitchen.
As for those white boxes under the mustache, those are the shoe storage things from IKEA, yeah? What's crazy is that I have that exact same spot in my apartment...weird "hallway" wall that sits between the door to my bedroom & bathroom. I've never known what to put there and now I think I will give these a try. I didn't realize they were so narrow (in depth).
I also have the bike storage problem too...but I don't think I could do the ceiling. But yes, what kind of hooks are those?
the way you have arranged the art over the couch is quite cool. I have never seen an Ork poster with such a big mat before, but I think it works.
For those loving the mustache key holder - I'm gonna take a stab at that and assume they got it at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. They're made by Ben Floeter and you can get them at his Etsy shop here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/benfloeter
(I have one of Natalie's felt pillows - so cute!)
thanks everyone for the positive feedback!
3 words- wide angle lens- that's why the photos probably make the place look a bit bigger than it is, but otherwise you can't get much in the shot.
i did first admire the mustache key hook on etsy, but then it showed up at my local urban outfitters on sale- i would have rather bought it straight from the creators, but i'm hoping they made a nice profit off urban.
i'm sorry the photo with the chandelier didn't come out better. it got blown out by the light from the window but if you squint you can kind of see it.
those are the shoe cabinets from ikea- and they're perfect there because they are narrow, hold the stuff we can't fit into our bathroom, and provide a perfect "landing strip."
the red lamp is also from ikea, but from a few years ago. i don't think they sell it anymore.
the firebox unfortunately has been bricked in, and there is a really lovely electrical outlet smack in the middle of it.
as for the bike hooks- a friend got them for us, but i believe she got them at the container store. and no, the bike is not used much unfortunately, and mostly functions as sculpture and the occasional drying rack.
trust me, that couch's days are numbered- but did i mention it's a sofa bed, and we live on the 5th floor of a walk-up. inertia plays a large role in keeping it.
and kellylc- anytime, i'll provide the animal collective if you bring the pbr. no vinyl though- sorry.
This does not feel teeny tiny!
Never thought you could physically divide 385sf like that and still have it feel open. Very cool.
One bedroom in under 400 sq. ft.? That's amazing...love your place, though the couch looks like it's seen better days (and perhaps missing a leg as a sectional?)
As A's sister, I'm lucky enough to crash here when I'm in NYC. Their place is adorable and well curated for a small pad, and yes I’ll take credit for a few of those items-ha! Their home is a testament to style that doesn’t rest on deep pockets or even an elevator. The free craigslist sofa, while a bit past its day, has served me well. Thanks lil' buddy! Maybe all guests should contribute to a sofa fund?
Wonderful! Like it better than the bigger ones.
I have a bike pulley system and I ride my bike to work every day. It's not a pain at all, it takes less than a minute to put up or down. I like having it up much better because we are blessed with 12' ceilings, with long hallways, & there's no better place to put it without obstructing traffic. Plus, it doesn't scratch or smudge up the walls.
I got the pulley system from Lowe's in their home storage department for $25. I mounted it to an orange-stained board and attached it with copper pipe strips to the pipes in the hallway. I did this only because I absolutely couldn't find the joists in the ceilng, so it's a little lower than some of my taller friends would like. If it were right at the top it would be perfect, but this works great and I recommend it to anyone.
Oh and I really like the ultra light mint green in the bedroom, and the apartment is great! Well done.
I should have recognized the shoe-storage, but for some reason I was thinking they'd be closer to the ground if that was what they were--dumb, I know! And I do see the chandelier now; had to google it first, but it looks good!
I love this apartment so much! I could totally live here. I too am blessed with an unrenovated kitchen and bathroom. Hooray for orange!
Haven't we seen your place before? Where's the kitty?
