Who Lives Here: Brynn Location: Chelsea — NYC Size: 351 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? This is my first apartment without roommates and I was ecstatic to be able to design everything myself. I think the combination of color and light adds such an element of happiness to an extremely small space that I never feel the lack of square footage. By adding unique pieces, plants and family pictures, my studio really feels like a home.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Being able to separate the studio into different living areas, while still finding pieces that were within my budget was definitely a challenge. A few items I was able to find on craigslist, while others I had to bargain hunt for. It amazing what fun, affordable things you can find if you look hard enough.

Nomade Express Slee...
Love what you've done here! Wish I could see a bit more of the kitchen, because I'm digging the paint job that's teasing me from a distance - as well as the little kitchen seating area!
love the grouping of the maps over the bed.
I don't usually like groupings, but I adore the way you framed the maps over your bed. Looks a little cluttered for my taste, but I have to give you a thumb's up because of your beautiful use of color and your amazing furniture placement. Good luck.
I love your little eating area! Can you tell me where you got that table? I'm moving into a smaller apartment and am looking for a space-saving dining table solution. Yours would be perfect. Thanks.
I love the colors, style & the placement of furniture! This is an excellent use of space. I don't feel the apartment is that small :) Love it!
What a great teeny-tiny space. I love the kitchen and window colors.
I would never have thought of dividing up your main room the way you did--particularly the placement of the sofa and chair--but it's brilliant!
Terrific use of space. This is one of the best
I've seen!
Like your space.
The map grouping is nice. It feels a little cluttered and overwhelming though.
I LOVE your bed area with the framed maps, the round mirror, and the little flower doo-dads. What a great space, great color, great layout. You'd never know it was teeny-tiny.
Oh, and the chandelier and the blanket... it all works really well together. (In my opinion)
yes the maps were a bit of a struggle since i hung them by myself. i would ideally like them to have more breathing room in between.
as for my kitchen block i actually got that off craigslist, however i was told it was originally from crate & barrel. what's nice is it has flaps on both sides so i can sit and eat or save space. because it's on wheels i roll it closer to the stove while cooking for extra counter space. plus i have my microwave in the cabinet beneath it.
Lovely, comfortable, great color, one of the best!
I love your sense of color and space. It gave me lots of ideas for my upcoming tiny space.
Very smart furniture arrangement in a tight space. I really like your use of color and artwork!
very adorable! where did you get the sofa?
sofa is actually from jennifer convertibles. i really wanted a pull-out sofa for guests to sleep on when they come visit and the price was ridiculously affordable.
i'd have to say that this apartment is just lovelyyyyy. i loved how you used the small space, and the colors are just perfect!
I also love the maps - and actually I think hanging them quite close together like that works really well.
also not sure if its recognizable in the pic, the 'maps' are all one map of manhattan/brooklyn/queens that i cut up. keeping them closer together i thought might help to see them as a whole.
This space is fantastic. Unpretentious, uncluttered and adorable.
Nice work.
This little place appears cramped and cluttered because that huge black bookcase dividing the room is creating an obstacle course to get from the bed to the bathroom...
If the bed were against the back wall, and the loveseat were at the foot of the bed, this little place would be so much more open and inviting - like an elegant little suite at a B&B.
The bookcase (preferably white) could be flat against the wall to one side, the tall chifforobe against the wall on the other side - and the vanity could settle next to the bed on the window side doubling up as a nightstand.
The maps would be a great focal point on the wall above the bed at the far end of the room - They're lost behind the corner now...
...and the chandelier would stand out so much more if the entire room were painted that blue color - now it just blends into the white walls and you hardly notice it.
Just a little rearranging and this place could be a winner.
thanks bepsf, i actually did a floor plan with measurements before i moved in (my dad had suggested your arrangement) and unfortunately the footage was not there when trying to make it all fit, hence how i ended up with what is shown now.
jupiterremixed uses better adjectives than i and i should therefore like to defer to them :)
and the hand drawn layout? excellent!
It looks so comfortably like home. Beautifully done. I love how you've used colour to both make the space cohesive and to define separate use areas. The wall decor arrangements are also fantastic, from the maps to the mirror and embellishments to the blue wall with flower heads (decals or painted details?). I really like your space!
I love it. Where did you get your rug? (you may have answered it but I didnt read through all the comments)
Cute!
I gave this a thumbs up because of your great space-saving solutions as well as how personality-laden it is. I wish I had been this creative with my first studio apartment.
I love the unique way you grouped the map above your bed. It's abstract, which adds more to the coolness of large art imo. That is going in my inspiration folder!
Kudos on your arrangement of everything else - you have a very small place, but you were able to carve out disctinct areas. I like it!
Sorry. The "Live Laugh Love" automatically disqualifies it. I'd be SO okay with never seeing one of those awful things ever again. I have to resist the urge to light them on fire when I see them in the store. Blech. Tacky.
the rug is from ikea.
This is one of the best I've seen. So well done.
I cant find it (the rug) on the website! That would be perfect in my apartment!!! Sigh!
First let me say that I visit apartment therapy all the time, but have never before commented. I had to register just so that I could tell you how much I love your space!
The way that you divided the room is perfect. I think it's very important to have a separate sleeping area. And this way with eh bookcase where it is you could even "forget" to make the bed and it doesn't even show!
I would LOVE to see pictures of the kitchen though. The little sneak peak is teasing me.
I love your use of colour pillows rug. Great job :)
Adore the maps in the bedroom and the wall color/dandelion graphic behind the TV. VERY well done...and the only one I've thumbs up thus far! Great use of space!
But I'd love to see the kitchen, too!
Great use of space, great light (am kitchen-green with envy). Would love to see a bedskirt, as risers are one of the greatest things ever, but should never, ever be seen.
@KLouise: I share your sentiment re: die, word art, die in a fire, but am not so inclined to dismiss an entire entry on one disliked accessory. (Rather a triumph, because my hatred of that particular flavor of accessory truly cannot be measured via any metric we currently use. No, I don't have a problem with hyperbole -- why do you ask?)
i will say normally i do find word art to be quite cheesy, however this was a gift from my little sister last christmas and everytime i look at it i think of her. so i find it actually makes my place feel more homey.
I think this is the best, most creative arrangement of a small space that I have ever seen.
I think you've done a great job with this place! The furniture placement does make the place seem a little cluttered but looking at the nicely drawn layout you can definitely see how and why it works!
I also love your use of colour and pattern! Simple but interesting. I know it's very easy to overdo colour in such a tiny space.
I like you place so much.
Could you place a link to more photos?
Thanks and Congratulations!
@maria_i: I'm pretty sure the rules don't allow for contestants to link to more pictures while the voting is ongoing. Which is too bad because its really hard to show up a place, as small as it might be in only 5 pictures.
This is really nice. I can't believe that your space is not bigger. What is that white piece with the doors I see in the first picture? I've been looking for something just like this.
Would you share your paint colors? I love the kitchen green, the bright turquoise and the more tranquil grey blue of the living/bedroom area. Very well coordinated!
lovely little apartment!
i'm wondering if you would share where you got the arm chair? i too live in a small nyc studio and am looking for a small-ish chair.
I love your apartment, it looks like somebody actually lives here.
p.s. i think the bookshelf looks fine, nothin wrong with a little privacy in your sleeping area. :)
You have style decorating! It would be nice to see the bathroom.
Brynn this is really nice looking! You've inspired me to get a wall decal. I've been thinking about updating my apartment with a bluesy theme and I think I'll use some of your ideas. Very nice.
I *need* your pillows. No really, I need those throw pillows (or something similar). Where oh where did you get them?
Love everything. The color scheme, the old photographs, how you arranged all your belongings in such a creative way. The mirror leaning against the wall, and that bookcase as a divider. It's really effective, and looks fantastic:)
P.S. Would love to see more of your kitchen! The colors are so refreshing.
Very cool! I really like the wall color choices. Being a geography nut, I find the map over the bed is very cool as well. Great job!
