What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? The art in my home is my favorite element. I'm a huge aficionado of mid-century modern décor and furniture, but live on a pretty tight artist's budget (I'm an actor and author). Several of the furniture and decorative pieces were already in my collection and others were found in vintage stores or on sites like craigslist (I haggled fiercely over most of the purchases, paying a fraction of their actual value). Art however was a different matter. With the high price tag on most mid-century art, I decided to create my own; all but one of the pieces hanging in my home were done by me. The result has been successful — I love what I've created and have even received several commissions to create art pieces for friends and colleagues.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The kitchen cabinets were my biggest challenge. They were a hideous dark brown fake "wood" veneer that looked cheap and shoddy. My building would not let me replace them or paint them, but their ugliness was impossible for me to live with. My solution: to cover the cabinets with a silver contact paper that make them appear to be actual stainless steel. I also removed several of the cabinet doors and painted the interior of the cabinets white to display my vast collection of Fiestaware and 50s cookery.
