Small Cool 2010: Elizabeth's Thrill of the Hunt

Little Division # 21

What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I've had the most fun scouring Craigslist for great deals on vintage furniture and acquired nearly all of my pieces in the 2 years since I moved to Chicago (aside from the George Nelson chair that my father "borrowed" from his college campus in the 1960s...) It has taken a lot of patience to find the right pieces, and I'm still looking for cushions for a chair in the living room, but I love the thrill of the hunt. The most expensive item was the couch for $100, but my favorite is the mid-century dresser in my bedroom that cost me $50 (plus the cost of the I-Go car I used to pick it up). I also love all of the natural light in the apartment, which is allowing me to practice at not killing house plants.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? I'm a bit of a collector and pack-rat, so the limited storage space in my small apartment has proved my biggest challenge. The space under my bed is filled to capacity and I've become very good at using every inch of our closets, which are very tall with good shelving (I couldn't live without my step ladder). I try to keep the clutter of my collections at bay with glass cabinets (essential for keeping the dust away), but I still have boxes of photo albums, cds, vintage board games, art supplies, etc. in a small self-storage space.
