Small Cool 2010: Jennifer's Bed Nook

Teeny Tiny Division #22

Who Lives Here: Jennifer Location: Temescal — Oakland, California Size: 277 square feet

What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I love my bed nook, which was a closet I decided I did not need. I installed some doors on the shelf above to hide my linen storage, and added a shelf behind my head board so I would have somewhere to put my alarm clock. I've also always loved the idea of lights above the headboard for reading in bed — my solution was a couple of cheap IKEA down lights recessed into holes I made in the shelf above. I'm hoping to find a print I like or some artwork from a friend to hang on the empty wall.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? As I continued to unpack my things after moving day, I realized that I had given up a lot by turning one of my closets into a bed nook. I did need more storage than I thought. I found it really helpful and fun to have friends over, have some pastries, and imagine what cool things we could do to the space. For example, my friend Jenny was the one that noticed that I had a perfectly good ledge above my closet to display my small books and other knick knacks.
