Who Lives Here: Jose Location: East Los Angeles, California Size: 274 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? It's sheer smallness. Though the tiny foot print can sometimes make furnishing and decorating a little vexing, in the end, I love how cozy yet airy everything is. Also, ART! I have some on almost every wall of the apartment — most of it is made by me or friends of mine. I treasure it, and it makes me happy, and that’s what a home should be a place to go to and be happy. I like that about my place.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Easily the hardest part when you live in such a small space is finding furniture that actually fits, yet still provides all the functions one needs. There's not two ways about it. I can’t just got to any random retailer, pick a piece of furniture and bring It home. It just doesn’t work. I’ve found that patience, creativity, and the gumption to do a little bit of furniture hacking, and pain staking planning (I have a measuring tape in my car at all times) goes a long way to making things work. Craiglist and thrift shops have been an invaluable resource for the odd item that completes a space.

Commercial Flour Sa...
Wow! Seriously cute place. Nice job!
A little cluttered but nice use of space.
Nice use of wall color to define the spaces.
It's like someone moved into an IKEA store display.
The kitchen especially looks really cute and well-organized. What color green is that paint?
i really like the kitchen and bathroom. the kitchen especially looks really functional and i like the organization you've implemented. the walls, IMO, are too distracting - I'd love to see it with fewer pieces, limited to the ones you love. The blue/white flower above the bed is from Urban (I think?) so I doubt you'd be sad to see it go (same goes for the poster tacked to the wall).
Your apartment is really cute! I like that functional & well-organized kitchen. Yes I like the wall paint too! I also love that small office corner. Believe it or not, I live in a 1300 sq townhouse and I can't even find a corner for my home office! Thumbs up for your cute small space!
I got a chuckle out of the IKEA comment. But I like the simplicity of this place--wonderful use of 275 sq.ft.
I love the color you've used in your kitchen. Who's it by?
great kitchen/bathroom and good use of space.
I love this space. It doesn't look nearly as small as it is! Excellent work.
LOVE the bathroom.
I disagree with the ikea comment.
Your place has too much personality to be an ikea display, though the size is the same.
pretty amazing for 275 sq. ft. 3 very separate spaces without seeming really crowded.
i seriously hope you dont pay a dime over 500 for this tiny apt.
I think you have done a fantastic job organizing and decorating your space!
Love the round side chair, where is that from? Nice place, good luck.
wow! pretty great looking. love all the personal touches (art all over). clearly a lot of effort went into it and i love the result. it seems well organized to make use of the space.
to the person who called it cluttered...well...there's only so much editing someone can do; it's 275sqft! :)
Just a little too many small pictureframes on the walls to my taste, but a great job otherwise!
Wow-way thumbs up-how'd you do so much with so little? I'm amazed!
There is a difference between "cluttered" and "joyously full."
THIS is "joyously full."
And Jose, you kicked ass with the layout.
This is a good layout for all of these different functions. It looks really nice and comfortable.
All the "too much IKEA!" comments are not unexpected, but hey, if that's what your tiny space and budget will allow...
I think you've done a great job of personalizing the place and fitting a lot in there without totally overcrowding it. And the blue is very soothing. Nice job!
i agree with the ikea comments...but you gotta do what you gotta do! i love the constant color scheme going throughout; it doesnt make it seem overwhelmed by color and design. good job.
I love it! Lovely use of space. I'm glad you've been able to separate your sleeping space from living space; people keep informing (telling) me I need a sleeper sofa or futon for my 390 sq ft place, but I disagree. I like having divided space.
Also, a space like this would easily go for $750 in Toronto. It's easy once you get used to it.
Very personable! I agree with the "joyously full" comment--you nailed it. Even your floorplan is great. Good luck!
Wow! It looks much bigger than the 274 sq ft...great job!!
Amazing job fitting everything in! Looks great, love the airy feel.
This is an amazing use of space! Looks much larger than 274 sq ft. Who says you can't take pictures of small spaces? These photos perfectly capture the rooms...and not a vignette in sight! Well done!
excellent job. very livable. and i like it so much better when the floor plans show where the furniture is, not just the walls and windows
I love this, but is this seriously a guy's apartment? Wow.
Total thumbs up. I love the repetition of light blue with pops of red throughout. It makes the space look airy, light and fun... and WAY bigger than it is. Great job!
Impressive.
The IKEAness doesn't really strike me as hard as the others.
But I'm wondering how tall you are - Everything is hung so high!
one word: real. got my vote.
love what you've done here. I think the colors all 'round are soothing and fresh.
Is the shower just a curtain in a tiled room? the plan doesn't show any fixture for the shower.
Hi Everyone. Thanks for the kind words!
@LeslieM & AngelaDee76: The color in the kitchen Fennel by Glidden. I wanted a light colored green that wasn't minty, and this was the only one that looked good day and night.
@ashakekh: Yeah, its just a long curtain in a tiled room.
Oh, yeah!
@theserovingeyes: Most of the ceilings in my place are 7' 6" high, and in the bedroom, the roofline goes down to 7' on the window side. I myself am just shy of 6', and so most of the art is actually at my eye level and not as high up as it might seem.
Thanks again everyone.
Totally groovy! Love it.
P.S. This is not "cluttered."
East L.A., represente!
I can't concentrate while the fridge and freezer doors open that way. Is there any room to switch the hinges so they open INTO the room? That would drive me nuts!
@mikey1234, I'd be surprise if he's paying under $800 for this space in California.
I think you did a wonderful job in this place. So what if majority of things are from Ikea, if they work, they work. =)
I think its great space -- all the art really personalizes it. The matching/mismatched cabinetry helps to bring the place together. its much better than if it were all woodtone or white. i don't think most people make an effort to notice these things. You also did a good job with neutralizing a low ceiling with the higher up art.
i am not getting with all the ikea comments -- EVERYONE on here has ikea something or other -- welcome to the 21st century. R&B and DWR are a little out of reach for those of us that aren't day traders.
if you can't say something nice at least be good at it.
@scarlethue: oh, come on. We're supposed to be breaking down gender roles! Also, this is a design site, so being surprised at dudes having good taste that skews "traditionally feminine?"
Anyway. I'm not usually an IKEA fan, but I really like this place. It doesn't seem nearly as small as it is, it's very inviting, and I love the use of space in the kitchen, with the shelf, microwave/cookbook shelf, and light all fitted together like puzzle pieces. My kitchen is huge (like, 16' x 16'), but apparently laid out by someone who had never cooked a day in his/her life, or really even assembled any food at home, and I bet it's much nicer to cook in this kitchen that's...wow. Less than 1/4 the size!
Love all the pale blue/white; such a nicely accomodating band of tile in the bathroom....
What is the light blue upholstered armchair? Not Ikea, surely?
Cute. Love the colors.
It looks so much bigger. Love the colorful art. What are you using as your media stand? It's great.
Lovely apartment!!! I wish I could have sofa areas too! (My place is about 220sqft but I have a gigantic bird cage that takes up what could have been the sofa space...). I LOVE your bathroom, absolutely love how all the colours fit in together. I've been trying to accent my room with turquoise and will probably use your room as an inspiration for wall art to bring this into my space.
Question: What do you have dividing your bedroom from the living space? I see it in your floorplan but not in the pictures.
And as for Ikea, my whole room is pretty much Ikea because everything else in Switzerland costs easily twice as much (and is not nearly half as good looking). And as a student, I'm only going to live here for another 2-3 years so why invest in anything better?
Jose, love your digs. Long live IKEA.
Very well done, Jose. Your place rocks!
Great Place...
AT, keep showing actual small spaces!!
Absolutely nothing is wrong w/ IKEA!! We all can't shop at Design "Not With-in" Reach, or be Room & Board snobs!
I find it funny when people use Room & Board and Crate & Barrel as a "high-end" reference.
incredible and quite lovely and full of personality.
This is definitely a great use of space and the definition of self-expression. So cute!
I've always loved your absolutely awesome and stylish apartment. It's a tiny space, but it's definately organized and so lovely! I adore organization :) The colors are great! LOVE LOVE LOVE the color of the bedroom and the art that surrounds you ^_^
@bobbin: The chair is indeed ikea. I believe it was called Fridene Its was discontinued in 2005 i think. I picked up mine on CL for 20 bucks a while back. You can see the orange version in this AT House tour: http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/072407lorenas/item/25983
@Pepperoni_Burglar: The furniture in my living room is almost all from the Magiker line at ikea. Still one of my all time favorite furniture lines, in terms of style and lines. The media stand is the magiker sideboard. Here is another shot of it from an AT post: http://www.unplggd.com/unplggd/flickr-finds/flickr-finds-one-sweet-white-technorific-setup-070691
@Chia: Its a long story, but there is a metal security gate that separates the spaces. I painted it white and added a board to make it more like a wall, you can see it here. I left the top open to allow for light to come in as the only source of light in the living room is the tiny window in the bedroom.
Well done, Jose! Gorgeous colors. So creative. The kitchen is amazing! I'm another small spacer in LA. Good luck in the contest!
Gorgeous colors Jose! Your apartment is so light and airy. The wall behind the bed seems a bit cluttered with photos and artwork, as well as the placement of the dresser opposite the bed. I am not sure how distracting the artwork above the television is when you're watching a show or a movie... I do love how you play with the color blue and the organizational system in your bathroom is great!
Great space! Is that an ikea desk with the round chair? If so, I'm going to go buy it! My room is sooo small. The extras (pictures and accessories) make your space look homey!
If you want to get a new chair but don't have room, I'll gladly take that blue one off your hands...
Can you tell me where that tall dresser/shelf unit is from?
