What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My favorite element in my place is color. The colors that I've chosen make my home feel cozy and vibrant.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The biggest challenge for me was finding furniture that was to scale with my place. I tried to find pieces that were not too bulky or heavy looking. For a long time the place was quite minimal. Over time I found pieces to fit with my style that were the proper scale. Recently I developed a need for an 'office'. I decided a secretary desk would work well for me and purchased one with an ugly finish and then painted it to coordinate with my main room. My favorite resources include antique malls, estate sales, and craigslist.

Very Cute, Quirky, Feminine and Sophisticated!
So girly!
I don't even like pink, but your place looks great!!
love the kitchen and bathroom!
omg, one of my favorites so far!! I bet you are having a lot of fun living there. Just simply gorgeous and cozy. Well done!
Yeah, not a huge pink fan either... but seeing it peek from that bedroom is killllllller. I guess I could say "rad" too... lol Beautiful!
I love the white kitchen & bathroom! Normally I don't like white or pink that much... but yours is an exception! It is so cozy & feminine!
But if I were you, I'd try to squeeze a small living room in the apartment. That is just me! I'd always like to have a living room so my friends & I can have an area to sit down & talk.
Nevertheless, this is a cute place!
Eyecandy. The bones of the apartment are fantastic : the built-ins, the sinks... and the personality you've added makes it so whimsical and airy. I burn to see more.
Hi Julie,
I love your place! Could you tell me what brand / color the pink paint is? It's so beautiful!
Thanks!
Super-cute. I love the bathroom vanity and the kitchen.
love the secretary desk and the bathroom!
I LOVE pink. I don't think you need a living room -- I'm convinced that the best place for friends to talk is around a kitchen/dining table, which you have. Really like this place.
I love your kitchen and bathroom, but I'm at a loss about the actual furnishings (or lack of) for the rest of your place.
Do you all just pile into the bed or sit around the table?
Love it. What a girly treat!
LOVE this. The pink walls are wonderful. You did a great job making it your own Julie.
Adorable place. The gray and pink walls are beautiful.
Fantastic. It's totally clear that you're slowly acquiring pieces that you love instead of filling it with crap. This is the first place I've seen of the contest where I truly would not change a single thing. My favorite elements are the art deco ceiling fixture in the bedroom, the drapes that go all the way to the ceiling like they're supposed to, and those frackin gnarly little ceramic head planter things. Are those vintage, I want them, ebay? Two thumbs and a big toe.
I love everything about your place except for the pepto bismol Pink. Wayyyyy too pinky for my taste.
I agree very girly and very pretty! Love the pink walls in the dining area. Love all your vintage pieces it all goes perfect with your kitchen and bathroom! Beautiful home.
Wow! Your color choice is awesome. For such a small space you've chosen the perfect furniture to avoid looking cluttery or cramped. I would love to come home to a place like that everyday. Thumbs up!
I lived in an apartment where the front door was in my bedroom and grew to hate it.
In this space, considering how large it seems to be, I would block off a sleeping area with pretty sheer curtains then create a small seating area; maybe a settee or a few comfy chairs facing the dining area.
The colors are fantastic and that kitchen is unbelievable.
Your kitchen and bath are perfection. And everything else is great too--at once cute and elegant, a style I strive for and can't achieve. Am I reading your floor plan right--you don't have a living room as such, just the bed and a few occasional chairs?
Great use of color! What brand/color is the gray paint??
PS. I would also love the names of the pink and gray colors.
pink's not my thing, but you did a great job!
this is such a great space! far more than the sum of its parts.
it's one of those cases where though many single items and aspects don't appeal to me but the whole piece and place are amazing! unbeatable results, julie :) well done and thank you.
great use of color and wonderful job keeping it clean and uncluttered. eventually, a small loveseat might be a welcome addition.
Darling!
Wow! Super charming place. Portland Pretty in Pink!
It's a little sparser and a little girlier than my taste usually runs, but it appears to be a really good execution of your own vision.
That said, I'm in love with your little pink stool. I'm guessing it's vintage and therefore exists only for you. :(
I love your house! Please give us the paint colors!!
Love the place :-) And you must dish about the paint colors! I have been looking for the perfect purple/grey forever and i love yours!
Not a huge pink fan but your place is lovely. I especially like your kitchen and bathroom!
Sweet! Happy lives here!
Love that built-in vanity thing in the bathroom. The sink seems a perfect opportunity for you to do a skirt. Something graphic and lattice-y.
I'm going to agree with the others and comment on how gloriously functional and beautiful your vanity is in your bathroom.
This is just fantastic. I love how the pink and purple compliment each other, and the bathroom vanity is the best!
So beautiful! Good job!
Cute place.
I have seen this EXACT odd glowy-photo effect on countless Real Estate photos and blog sites. What is it???? Some "Home Interior Glow" effect in Photoshop????
@scarlethue I was wondering the same thing! It looks like it might be from clunky outlining with the dodge and burn tool.
I'm going to echo the call for specific paint colours. :)
now THAT is how you do pink!
@scarlethue @homebody i think the poster pulled the contrast all the way down too. looks a little unusual but not offensive, imho
I am so jealous of your kitchen I don't even know what to say. Although I guess I just said it. The vanity in the bathroom is also a pure DREAM.
Hot damn, your gray and pink color scheme is to die for.
too photoshopped. I loved the layout, and I think I love colors.. but can't tell. Still thumbs up in spite of the Photoshop, but would love to see it without. Perhaps when it moves on to the next phase?
I don't mind the effect, It is just one of those things that I see everywhere and cannot pinpoint and I work with Photoshop every day.
I see it on RedFin real estate site--so I keep thinking that it is some web-based photo "enhancement" program/uploader they make available to Real Estate agents.
great use of color. love the white in the kitchen and bath. so crisp and clean looking.
This place totally makes me wish I was single. Lovely, lovely color and cute vintage action.
And that deco-style vase on your dining table? I have the same one in a jadeite green. Do you know anything about its origins? Mine came from a great-aunt's place.
I love this place. It is my absolute favorite of the small cools. Paint colors, layout, furniture, architecture, etc. It's all fab!!!!!!!
Love gray, and love an actual hue to play off gray, whether pink, chartreuse, orange....
I like the bedroom, and the bathroom as well (and the palette throughout), but the living (dining?) room and kitchen kind of did nothing for me. Good architectural features, though, so if you're responsible, good for you! :)
Great place!
I love the pink! Soooo ultra feminine! I would live there in a heartbeat!
Love the Pink & Gray! The pop of black from your table is perfect! I like the non-living-room room. It's clearly what works best for you!
that is a most amazing kitchen.
Gorgeous and feminine!! Could you tell me the name of the color in the bedroom!!
this is my apartment. thanks so much for all of the nice things you have said! it warms my heart.
for those of you inquiring about paint color, i don't actually have the names or numbers. i found them in a pantone book when i worked for dwr. i just took them to the paint store and had them matched. i could try to find the chips and send them to you? ;)
@portlandsunshine- these awesome planters are from the following etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/clayflower22
@cassis- i do have some other furniture in my main room. i painted the floorplan on watercolor paper, so it may be hard to tell, but there's a nightstand to the right of the bed, a small vintage upholstered chair to the right of the nightstand, followed by both a tall and short sapien bookcase (then the door).
@emmelemm- the stool is vintage. sorry! i do love it. i use it to get to the shoes and handbags that are up in the top of my closet and to the jars and vases in the tops of my kitchen cabinets. if i have too many people over, it also doubles as a chair.
@scarlethue @homebody- i just used iphoto. i adjusted the shadows and crispness. i'm not too techsavvy. i am actually a real estate agent, so maybe i should check out some of those sites?
@dieseltrix- i don't know the origins of the vase. i picked this one up at a thrift shop in indiana (where i'm from) for $1.50 several years ago. i heart jadeite. i'll bet yours is really cute!
Nice - good job - love the grey - pink combo - bedroom my favorite
this is making me homesick for Portland, such great personality in the architecture there. almost makes up for the rain. sigh.
There is not one thing about you home that I do not love. I keep coming back to the pictures because to me the feeling is so fun and homey. The polka dotted kitchen curtains are especially sweet.
i am loving the pink. it is very bold and bright. i tend to use pale pinks, so i am envious!
The kitchen and bathroom are so beautiful! As is everything else. This is my favorite entry so far.
Adorable. Love the pink dining room, the kitchen is totally sweet. Do you do a faux vintage treatment on the photos? They have an interesting color to them, almost like a 50s magazine. Well done.
So adorable... sophisticated and a little bit cheeky at the same time, like a grownup doll house. Also, I'm so happy to see another small, cool kitchen with a mini fridge! I just got one for mine and made my landlord cart the space- and energy-hogging old one away, and it opens up the space SO much.
This home made my uterus heave! With joy! LOVE it!
Puts some happy sunshine in on those rainy days.
I love this. Puts a whole new spin on the pink and grey combo.
*laughs* I think it's funny how many people like the vanity...that's one of the few things I'm going to take out when I get around to renovating my place. I can certainly attest to how cute your place is having been there in person. Cheers!
i'm not crazy about the bed spread (too busy?). otherwise, swoon! i looove how meticulously decorated the whole place is!
Yes, that effect happens when the photo is taken too dark (underexposed) and then the shadow/highlight command in photoshop was used too much. (aka the "shadows" in iPhoto).
The darker areas have a lot of digital noise and color problems.
I suggest using a tripod, and take the photos brighter to begin with. Less editing is good.
If you're a real estate agent, investing in a tripod and a decent camera is solid idea.
I digress.
Love this apartment!
Bathroom and kitchen are making me swoon.
I even love the colors and everything you've added.
The only thing I'd change is adding a living room area in the bedroom, and pull the table out from the wall. Looks like there's room for it.
@syrtis----which neighbor are you?
@syrtis--ps...please put the vanity in the salvage area in the maintenance room of the basement when you remove it. thanks.
Wow. I have given you a thumb, and walked away with the knowledge that I have now borne witness to what must be the single girliest dwelling in the history of the universe. Good news is that I think everyone knows someone who would see this place and just keel over and die of pink frilly happiness.
Why the gawdawful HDR in the photos? Can't anyone see?
holy jesus, what a kitchen
I love the kitchen and bathroom. Also barely noticed it was a studio until I saw the floorplan - so very good space planning.
I NEED THAT KITCHEN.
Julie (mannequingirl), Ahhh!! Thanks for clearing that up. I have been dying to know.
Glad to see you are getting so many thumbs up, can't wait to see more of this in the semi-finals!
I love the color of this room! What paint color is it? Also, would you mind sharing the name of the pink paint as well?
I am obsessed with the kitchen. Cute place, but the tacky, HDR effect on the photos was really distracting!!
It is gorgeous. Pink is my favorite color. Love your head-vases, vanity, and kitchen...
I think pink is badass. Why must we always associate it with girliness!? Plus I think that dark grey really tempers it..
I love how the bedding pops with that pink wall peeking out from the next room...
I want to live in your kitchen.
@sholt: people are calling her place girly because it's covered with pink and feminine furnishings. Yes, it has other colors (most notably gray), but an overarching impression (even to me, someone with a fairly high tolerance for all that is girly and whose taste skews traditional/vintage/feminine/pre-1940s/whatever) seems to be pinkpinkpinkypink. Now granted, it's 2010, but I think at least 99% of the American population would agree that the color pink is the one most strongly associated with all that is traditionally feminine, and when you add that to the frilly decor, you get the "girliness" that people are (evidently erroneously?!) attributing to this space. Seems fairly straightforward. We can all wish for things to be different (and oh, how I do, so we could stop giving not-traditionally-masculine boys and not-traditionally-feminine girls boatloads of crap), but until people stop attending baby showers for girl-having women with armloads and armloads of the frilliest pink clothing they can possibly find, this, er, unfairness will continue.
(If I had been told in advance that that would require explanation, I wouldn't have believed it. Er, you go, girl, and take back your color!)
killer kitchen, LOVE it...
#1-I agree with everything emmelemm said
#2- this is one of my top 2 favorite homes in the contest
#3- Your kitchen and bathroom are making me green with envy! I so love those old bathrooms with the built in vanities. Most old bathrooms have those small sinks with no counterspace, so the vanity is a must have. And the kitchen is so charming. What kind of countertops do you have?
#4- Do you own or rent? I've seen a lot of places similar to this (in my apartment searches for my fantasy of moving to Portland) and I rarely see a W/D in places like this or such nice kitchens.
#5- I'm impressed how you used bright pink and dark gray, but the place still feels open and airy
I love your home and I could move in immediately without changing a thing. Wonderful job!
@ Apartment Therapy- can we have a full house tour? I want to see more pics of this place!
@heynowtex- i have concrete countertops. they have white pigment in them. i maybe wouldn't have chosen this type if i knew that marble could be had for about the same price that this ended up being, but they look great.
i own this place and have for nearly the past 4 years, but i may be moving this fall and selling...if you're interested, let me know.
I am totally in love with your built-ins. Your place has so much charm. That kitchen had me at HELLO! =)
