Who Lives Here: Kittie + Shih-Tzu (+ husband part of the time) Location: Tudor City — NYC Size: 194 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? That it is a serene retreat with everything I need to live graciously and run my business in such a small footprint.
Thumbs Up Voting is only activated for 48 Hours — so don't delay!
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The challenge was the teeny-tiny space, and that I wasn't prepared to sacrifice either my stuff or my comfort!
The solutions I created were based on this quote from William Morris in 1882: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or consider to be beautiful". If any of my stuff didn't meet either of those criteria, it didn't make into the apartment.
Additionally, every piece of furniture does double (or triple!) duty, and I designed built-ins with hidden storage, and searched out every nook and cranny for even more storage.
Resources I used most were overstock.com, csnstores.com, homedecorators.com, and of course my lovely, patient contractor!

White Enamel Four-P...
This is truly remarkable. I want to see more of it, bathroom particularly. I understand it's teensy, and not much more to see. Still, I want more pics.
WOW - this is an amazing, and amazingly tiny space - kudos to you for making this work! Neat, organized, and a well stocked bar :)
I assume you go for a lot of long walks outside, ha ha.
it just doesn't grab me the way some other small cool posts do. Almost seems too stale and hotel-like. I feel like any small space can seem livable if it is sparsely decorated and furnished.
I really liked that coloured glass display in your little kitchenette too.
THE BATHROOM!!!!!
THE CLOOOOSEEEEEETTTTT!!!!!!!
So beautiful and organized. Holy cow.
This was a house tour a while back, wasn't it?
It's beautiful and clever, but I agree it feels more temporary than homey.
This is what design is all about: solving a problem. Well done.
Bathroom was my fav.
Girlie comment: Love all those colorful shoes in the closet! Wish I could find a pair that I loved so much and were so comfortable I could buy them in every color:) Do share:)
Was this featured on a design show? I think I've seen it before.
I think you should win.
As already said amazing!!
How you have used the space while still looking spacious, not cluttered so organized. I a so impressed as I sit here in my home office that is a mess and about the same size.
The glass in the bathroom was a great idea and love your desk nook.
This feels kind of like a waiting room to me. Maybe some drapes?
I disagree with the comments that said it's too stale or not homey. In a small room like this, little "personal" knick knacks would make this room look cluttered real fast. Don't forget Kittie lives, works and sleeps in the same room.
it looks like a doctors office or even a staging apartment. i agree that she's done a great job of laying it out efficiently, but other than that this apartment does nothing for me. Just a whole lotta beige.
Can you cook in this place? I don't see a cooktop or even a microwave.
Love the bathroom--good use of glass and mirrors.
I loved this placed when shown as a house tour. It's so beautiful and up market, using every inch of space available. I'd really like to see this place win.
It looks cold because it is mid-century modern, which I grew up with, and which I have left behind. Everything is controlled, everything is tightly tailored. It lacks texture. There's no warmth, by design. Even a luxurious throw on the couch would make a big difference. But if the bathroom is evidence of the owner's design skills---wow---well done.
This room/place is not at all my style.
That said, please know that I gave you thumb(s) up and serious props for having both a bar and a walk-in closet in a space that is (OMG!) less than half of the size of my bedroom.
In a space this size, it is really all about priorities, and you deserve tremendous credit for identifying your priorities and sticking to them. (The fact that they were an open bar and a walk-in closet didn't hurt.)
Well-done.
Kittie, it would be great if you showed your Murphy bed - it's not clear from the note on the plan, is it folded up behind the glazed niche? how do you get to it? Are the shelves/desk rolled out every night?
I agree with some of the posters above that it feels a bit stale. I feel like I'm walking into a "set" apartment or hotel suite.
I'm going to echo the hotel room feel that some people have mentioned. The space is used very well, but its completely unpersonalized, and totally neutral. The pop of color in the closet was welcomed. I wish, the Shih-Tzu, would have made it into one of the shots. Maybe that would have lent some personality into the room.
All that being said, the bar, and the desk area are fantastic uses of space.
This is a beautiful hotel room.
Tatyana - no murphy bed -it was only a twin size in the original plan, where the desk is now. The sofa is a sofabed, with the Simmons Air Dream mattress which makes it super comfortable!
ashasek, I was only allowed the 5 photos, so couldn't show everything!
There is a microwave in the island, and there is a nifty pullout drawer I designed above the microwave that has a single induction cooktop - i really can, and do, cook!
You can see the whole shebang on my website http://www.lifestylespacedesign.com
I've seen Kittie's apartment on-line before and it still amazes me. She's a gracious lady with a great apartment! Hey Kittie, I'm down to four beautiful cats. Now if I could only find a "useful" husband, life would be grand!
Clean and very comfy, but boys it's small. New York for you.
kids girls bedding
I've seen this apt on TV before...
Bridget212323 - that's news to me! I'd love to know more...
Kittie
Kittie Congratulations! I vote you win hands down. I love, love, love your tiny tudor. I wish I could fly over the US to visit because although it's small it's a giant room with purpose to every inch and I'd love to experience the ambiance first-hand. Great designing/organizing!
Re: "It looks cold because it is mid-century modern..."
Um, notsomuch.
I've seen this before. I even have it saved as a favorite because it is so fantastic. Makes my tiny studio in SF look large.
yep. loved it before, loved it now. It takes a special kind of person to LIVE and WORK in a space that small. I admire those abilities!
Kittie, you should teach a class in "slash and burn" or some such thing. I think my paperwork alone would fill your apt.
Kudos!
I think this kitchen was featured here before...there's a hot plate in one of the drawers? I might be thinking of a different place.
Although it's not to my taste, it's impressive that you've been able to do all of this with under 200 sq ft of space. I personally appreciate how organized and tailored everything is. Some might consider the absence of knick knacks and personal effects less "homey" or lived-in, but I'm not very sentimental about my belongings and can easily see myself living in a space like this.
194 square feet with that closet?....automatically gets a thumbs up from me. That's amazing. Also, the bathroom is great.
This space is amazing. It takes a an extremely talented person to design such a small space to be elegant and functional. For anyone who's ever tried... a studio apt. is like a puzzle where every piece needs to serve a purpose. Everyone's personal taste is different, as well as their budget which I can appreciate. Well done!
I see nothing MCM about this at all, actually.
And this is SMALL, people, so I am filled with respect.
In a space that small one must be ruthless, as Kittie has been. She has a dog, an amazing closet, a bar and a husband only part of the time, all in NYC, I don't see how it could be any better than that!
The only thing I truly don't like (beside the lilies, I am just not a lily person) is the vessel sink- I understand that a clear sink doesn't have the visual weight of a solid one, but I find vessel sinks to be awkward to use, clean and they don't seem like the most efficient use of space to me.
This is a pied a terre; it's not somewhere that you could actually live in (there's basically no kitchen). Show me somewhere this small and organized that is actually somebody's home, and I'll be impressed. Not by this, however, no matter how tasteful it is: it's just a personalized hotel room.
She lives and works there- I have read about how she did the apartment over before- I believe it is her full time residence.
Dear Juliet - actually, this IS my primary residence: I live and work here.
The fact that I spend a week a month in Dallas where my husband has his business (only because I'm still in love with him!), does not mean that it is not my 'real home'.
If I was lugging half my wardrobe to and fro from NY, you would have a point, but I have everything I need in my little NY space, and travel with just a business bag.
Just wanted to clear this up for AT readers in general.
i saw this on tv. was it "small space, big style"?
that was a great hgtv show!
an organizational triumph. that bathroom is heavenly.
Wow. Very nicely designed, but it doesn't look to me like someone actually lives here (a feeling no doubt heavily influenced by the fact that I don't think I COULD actually live here). It feels temporary. Very clean, but it does, like some other commenters have alluded, have the feel of a very nice hotel aimed at the business traveler, not a home. "Here's the bed, here's the minibar, here's the desk with Ethernet, plenty of room to work, then get a good night's rest," etc. If that were the intent and use, I'd be giving it an 11 out of 10.
Amazing! only one question where do you cook? in the kitchen I can only see a sink....
This really nice. Like a hotel. But it feels very 90's to me.
Not that that's a bad thing. Just interesting.
emal, I have an induction hotplate that slides out in a custom-built drawer in the island, a microwave under that, a small crockpot, a toaster, a frying pan & a soup/pasta/rice pan.
I really do cook real food from scratch!
Thanks for commenting!
Kittie
The bathroom is gorgeous. I understand if color is not your thing but I would have loved to see some punches of color.
To hide a kitchenette:
Suspend louver doors from the ceiling.
My Brooklyn studio is 165 sq. ft. Your apartment has been quite the inspiration!
