Who Lives Here: Louise + 2 shih tzus Location: Upper West Side — NYC Size: 345 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My canopy bed. It's the perfect high-low piece. It was handmade in New Hampshire of super-thick iron, so it's incredibly heavy. I'm sure it was very expensive — but I found it on Craigslist for $200. I dressed it up with sheer tie-top curtains I found on Overstock.com for $6 a panel. Then I bought the best latex mattress, organic sheets and Thai Silk pillows to dress it up! It's my sanctuary, my cocoon.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? When I moved back to NYC, I was downsizing from an 1,800 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bath home in Miami that was filled with incredible furniture, some of which I inherited cool mid-century lamps and bar, antique chairs that I reupholstered and lots of mirrors. My challenge was to create a home with the same chic feel in 345 square feet by choosing the right pieces to ship up here. I took inventory and measurements of every piece of furniture. I drew a floorplan of this apartment and then drew individual pieces of furniture "to scale" then cut them out. That allowed me to move the pieces around to see what fit and where. I chose what I wanted to ship, and put the rest in storage! My bed is the only piece I purchased here!

Sprout Side Table
OMGGGG this is awesome
Though it appears to be crammed especially in the last picture this is still very beautiful.
Nice soft and warm colors, love the lighting. Nice use of mirrors and all your pieces are in harmony. If I had those chairs I would have both of them in there too.
The bed was a score and the sheer curtains what a great idea, looks great.
I cannot believe how beautiful this is... and that you did it all on paper first! Amazing.
Wow! So small, so impeccably and thoughtfully put-together! Great job!
I love most of the pieces in your place, but it's just feels a bit cluttered to me. I think the canopy bed would have a better effect if you didn't have two wingback chairs right next to it. =) Good luck!!
Very cute and well thought-out!
Wish the artwork and mirrors were hung rather than left leaning - but overall it's a great little place: Thumbs Up!
Holy crap! Small, cool just keeps getting cooler!
Very Pretty, but seems so small. I have 100 less feet (i wish i could enter, but definitely next year) and from the pics mine appears more spacious!
Clever idea to make the refrigerator a "wall." I didn't realize that's what it was until I saw the floor plan!
I love this!! Can someone tell me which door is in pic #3??
It has a mirror next to it. It isn't entry or bathroom. Could it be a closet door????
Yes, its a closet. :)
Thank you everybody! I'm so excited for your comments!! I was shy to post it, but very happy I did. Luv, Louise
Beautiful! And re: the comments about the chairs -- they're really important if you want more than one other person over at a time without having to sit on the bed! The chairs look very comfortable for guests.
Louise, small and cool doesn't get any cooler than this. What an elegant little jewel box!
Oh yeah!
I agreed there should be some type of chairs, but just thought two big wingback chairs don't really work in this such small space especially if they are right next to another bulky item. I was just thinking chairs with lower backs..
It is so crammed! I love the feeling of it, but I've seen smaller apartments appear larger. The canopy bed is gorgeous, but too big for the space.
This is incredible!! Well done. I love the effect of the canopy bed and sheer curtains.
That first pic really speaks to me because I'm considering something similar :D I also like the variety from almost tailored style to comfy casual plush. Great space.
I love your place! Especially the canopy bed and wing chairs... they add height. Plus the bed makes it look like a room within a room. I agree with Lady Mantel, it looks like first class on the Orient Express. Very very impressive. Where did you get the curtains from? Thank you for entering :-)
Thank you! I studied at Parsons and am starting my own (virtual) design biz -- so your comments mean so much! I found the curtains on Overstock.com! Luv, Louise
Awesome! A guess I found "my" style. :)
I love it!! the bed, especially, is just inspired. It totally lacks that "there's a bed in the living room" look of too many studios.
This is just lovely. Agree with the previous posts, re: "jewel box" and "Orient Express". Certainly not for those who are fans of the more modern (read: barren) aesthetic. This makes me want to curl up with a good cup of coffee and a favorite book. Well done!
Clutter??? I don't see any clutter. This is the best adult, tiny studio I've seen yet.
There's no clutter here, but the pieces are kinda big for the space. But it is really pretty nonetheless.
Pretty, Pretty...
I think it's really pretty, but too crammed with the wingback chairs.
I love this. It gives me hope that I could live in such a small space someday. For people who say the chairs look cramped, I would remind them of how small this studio is. Putting seating in front of the bed is just one of many compromises the owner has had to make to make the space seem like more than just a bedroom with a tiny kitchen.
Holy majoley is this weeny teeny tiny! It deserves it's own category! This layout never would have occurred to me. Kudos!
Holy moly. Excellent.
Crowded but stylish.
To me, this is the quintessential Upper West Side apartment, sophisticated, unique, cozy, filled with fun treasures, all-in-all gorgeous. I can see how some people feel it's too crowded but I don't feel suffocated and it's nicely edited. I love your gorgeous pieces, it has the turn-of-the-century feel, even though (surprisingly) your place seems to be devoid of any architectural elements, ie mouldings.
I love it and is definitely in my top 3 favs of this contest!
Gosh, i love this so much. I love the fridge-wall and the buddha and the soft, antique-y lighting. I also love the chairs in front of the bed, it makes it seem like a little nook to escape into. I don't mind it being "crowded" because it's so beautifully put together, like an elegant little nest.
I think it's jewel-box perfect, and can only assume that the intelligence and elegance of the design reflect the designer's own attributes. I can imagine how delightful it is to be one of your guests, comfortable on the paired slipper chairs or win-back chairs, drinking coffee and liqueur and discussing matters far more compelling than whose DUI has been most recently reported on TMZ. Brava!
Rapunzel - I've had great soirees here! Its been quite comfortable with 7 people, that's the most I've accommodated .... maybe there is more floor space than how it appears in the pictures. Thank you for the compliments, you are more than welcome to stop by to discuss life!
to me the now "teeny tiny" division is what makes this contest. i love seeing great spaces like this one that reflect the style and life of the person that lives in them.
How very elegant!!! This is fabulous and so well thought out. Your taste is fantastic and the many light colored furnishings make it feel much bigger. It's cozy, too...your sense of style is inspiring and so tasteful. Nice job!
I like it too! Like the colors and the wing chairs and their placement. It works. Thumbs Up!
I Love Louise's lil' cocoon!!! Although small, it is super cozy and tastefully decorated.
Though not my style, this is really lovely. My only suggestions would be to lose the pillows on the wingbacks, hang some of the art and replace the slipper chairs with an upholstered bench, but that's just me. Good luck!
Thank you so much for the comments and compliments!!! As a new designer (shameless plug for upcoming design biz at www.SanctuaryHomeDesign.com).....it means alot to me!
I've only refrained from hanging the mirrors because they are so heavy that we feared for the strength of the walls...and the one piece of art shown in the last photo is actually going up for auction on ebay, so its there ready for its new home (Michele Lablais incase ur interested!)
Anyway -- thank u !!
How beautiful! What a superb use of space. Love this!
you and i are switching homes, just thought i'd let you know before the trucks show up ;)
It really is impressive what you did in such an amazingly small space.
The last photo does make it look a bit cramped and if I were you I would take out that extra couch I think it is and just have the two chairs.
But regardless well done on such planning!
Congratulations on making such flamboyance work in such a small space.
Your landlord should be shot for that awkward tilework in the kitchen area. Well, maybe not shot dead, but certainly winged.
the bed and chairs are so romantic and almost whimsical....im in love
Now this is inspiration! Amazing. Louise isn't afraid to fill up a small space with big things. I wish there was some more reflective things in the space but I love this.
Hi Loiuse,
It's Tumaini from Ladies Who Launch.
I just voted!
Do we have a winner, peeps? I think we might!
Holy moly indeed! So pretty.
Thank you for posting! You've completely inspired me regarding what to do with my bedroom!
Gorgeous! I'm inspired.
its obviously just a room and i couldn't live there.. but u ve pulled it off.. if only more ppl had taste like yours! wd!
Wow!
Wow. Those chairs are a dream come true! They would look perfect with my antique camel back couch.
I live in a studio about this size and I love seeing how people make it work!
Wow it's incredibly chic for such a small space!
I love your bed!
Yes, the kitchen is tiny, but I've got Stainless Steel GE Profile frig and Convection Oven with granite countertops -- so it makes up for space in a way.
Probably should have shown kitchen rather than the last photo - which makes the apt. look much more cramped than it actually is - probably my angle of the photo.
Thanks for all the fab comments! U give me a boost and a belief that I'm on the right path with my new design biz! (plug: www.SanctuaryHomeDesign.com) Luv and Peace to All!Louise (aka Louli)
I love, love, love that you've been able to incorporate this much style into such a tiny space! More importantly - I love that you've done it on a budget. Anyone can make a place look great with unlimited cash - but clearly you've made an effort to do it in a way that others can afford - and that's what makes your entry a standout! Best of luck! Bren
I want that bed!!!
AHHH LOVE LOVE LOVE. LOVE. I've been trying to figure out how to make my studio into a cocoon, so inspired!
I find your home absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing. The shameless business promotion more than once, not so much.
I am sorry - very claustrophobic and the lights really have to go. Thumbs down.
opulence in 345 sf... genius
Love it -crammed makes it cosy. Would suggest only one wing chair and some color splashes. I would love to see a red lamp in the kitchen.
I love the wing chairs. It would be hard to replace those and still have equal style and comfort. Two Thumbs up!
Love it. And although we don't see them, I bet the shitzus fit right in. My only qualm about your place is how they fit in. (Aren't you afraid of little paws? How can they jump onto furniture so high? Or is that a good thing? Is there enough floor space for them to have a little run and play?)
I love this, it is absolutely beautiful! Gorgeous! I am planning to use a similar color scheme in my new studio, but would like to paint my bathroom and kitchen from the off white color they are- do you have any thoughts on what t colors would look nice and would help me to continue a romantic/warm look and feel into my bathroom/kitchen so that the entire studio has a unified feel? I am new to decorating and would love any thoughts! Also, any idea where I could find pillows similar to the ones on the chairs? Thank so much for sharing!
Sophisticated and glamorous. But it does look like it would be hard to get into bed.
Good gawwwwwwwd, I LOVE this, lady!!
P.S. Your lamps are one of my favorite parts and I must beg to differ with another commenter- they must never go, in my opinion! And what a bold move they are in a space so small. I love love love luuuuuuuuuuuuv what you've done.
I love the framed mirror and the small table right in front of it. It looks like the table was custom-made or updated with shadow-box picture frame moulding around the stone top to match the mirror. I love your space!
so tiny - but i'm in love with the wing chairs and the bed area. gorgeous!
