Who Lives Here: Maddie & Mike + 1 dog + 2 cats Location: Upper West Side — NYC Size: 504 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My favorite element is that we weave a lot of different inspirations into one setting: antiques like our rug, chain furniture like our couch, custom made furniture like our ottoman, family pieces like our hippo and E-bay finds like much of the art hanging on the walls. It's definitely a unique space that you won't find anywhere else!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The biggest challenge in our home is the narrow layout that has a galley kitchen on one side. It was very tricky to make distinct living spaces including a living room, place to eat and a place for our kitchen tools. We moved the furniture around many times. We also made style trays to see how the furniture would fit together before we made any big purchases. Sometimes I've gotten really stressed out about our home and won't invite people over. But, it's my husband who reminds me that there is so much love poured into each corner. Just seeing the pictures reminds me the story of each "scenario" in our home. Even though the floorplan isn't ideal, we've definitely made it into a place where we spend most of our time happily.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Very cheerful. Has that summery vacation home feel. I like it!
Thumbs up is closed! :(
let me give this a thumbs up, por favor!
I wish we were able to get a better sense of the space...but I like what I see!
Why can't I vote?
Anyway, I love the colors, it is what I'm going for with my apartment. Really great color combinations that flows throughout the apartment.
Closeups of stained furniture and curtains tied into pig-tails are such a turnoff...
This place is pure sunshine.
I have a feeling those are not stains, the fabric on the diningroom chairs look to have the same coloring.
AT made me fall in love with grey and yellow – love seeing it here. (Thumbs up works for me – maybe it's a glitch?)
I like your place a lot - I agree that it's a really good mix of things. However, I think your hippo is actually a rhino. I say this as a devoted hippo afficionado (and also a friend of rhinos).
I agree with your hubby. Thanks for sharing your loved and very human feeling space.
So lovely. Relaxing. I love the pale blue paint colour in the main room. Possible to find out what paint colour that is? Thanks!
love it.
Hopefully we can see more soon. Everything looks bright and happy
must ask: blue paint color in dining room?
Hi guys :-) The upholstered fabric on the ottoman and dining chairs that is double layered which is why it has different tones. I'll get back to you about the wall color... I think it's Benjamin Moore "Icing on the Cake". Thank you for voting!
@thebean: either that, or the same exuberant wee one also hit the dining room with the blue highlighter!
So cheery and charming. This is one of my faves!
I wish these were wider images to get a better idea of what the place looks like, but it looks darling.
LOVE the grey and yellow. Fresh and sophisticated all at once- it makes me think of limoncello and doves.
Also, what a FANTASTIC portrait of Eddy Merckx over the bed!
I would love to live here!
I'd love it even if the furniture was marked up.
It looks like a lovely happy comfy home! Great colours. One of my favourites yet.
I'd be interested to see the kitchen but I know there's only so many photo shots you can show.
Nice colors looks homey the pictures are not the best. I would of left out the close up of the ottoman and focused on a better element.
It would look better if you put all your art on one wall in the bedroom and not so high.
Thanks LoriSF. I think the artwork idea is great. I'm going to do it tonight. I agree with you about the ottoman shot. I'm new at this! I appreciate your advice and the nice comments are really appreciated :-) Thank you for voting!
Could have done without the closeup of the sofa, but all in all this is a lovely home.
colorful and inviting, what a great layout to the space!
I think it looks great!
The colors are soo pretty =)
I also really like the style of your furniture, definite thumbs up!
What a happy home! Thumbs up.
For Maddie and Mike - in the hopes that you check the comments - could you please tell me where you found that wonderful open road painting above your bed? I am looking for something just like that.
Hi Blixx :-)
The screen print is by Allan D'Arcangelo. Thank you to GenMen who also commented :-) (She's my student!)
Maddie
I'm voting for this especially because of the color combinations. I love how you carry the same color theme throughout your place, but use it differently in each room.
that hippo is amazingly fantastic. i am so jealous!!!
Holy crap! I totally missed the hippo for all the rhinos the first time around. Great hippo too!! He's adorable.
I really like this one! It's kind of a mish-mash of stuff that's so simple yet so inviting! Exactly the kind of place I would feel really comfortable in.
Question: Where did you get the blue leather pouf in the bedroom? I have been looking for something just like that!
This is lovely but poorly photographed (like so many entries this year, or am I wrong?). But still, lovely :) Thumbs up.
This apartment is fierce! Work it Mike and Maddie!
Thumbs up for sure! (Despite the fact you're place is 4 sq feet over my rule of 500 sq feet or less.)
What is that little funny head on the book? An old ashtray?Just the kind of thing to catch my eye and make me want to go there. Love it. I am concerned that you do not know a hippo from a rhino but I blame your parents for that.
Thanks everyone for voting! The pouf is from the Moroccan store in the Chelsea Piers. Also, John Derian sells them. You can get them affordably on E-Bay, but I'm not sure that they stuff them... it seems like that would be hard to do by myself. Officially, the hippo is the little statue in the first picture, and the rhino is the wall hanging in the dining area. Right? Don't I have a hippo AND a rhino in my apartment? :-)
I love the stripe yellow wallpaper in the bathroom. Do you mind me asking where you purchased it and the brand?
Thanks!
Kate (NC) - I love that you commented on the Hippo, and still told this poor girl she didn't know the difference between a hippo and a rhino!
Hi guys :-)
I painted the yellow stripes. It's a rental so we couldn't put up wallpaper.
Maddie and Mike your place is fantastic! Do you mind sharing where you found the yellow/grey/black artwork about the white hutching in the dining area? I've been looking for artwork in those exact color combinations/sizes.
Thanks!
Gorgeous throw on the web! I think you deserve a thumbs up.
I'm loving your hippo and the rhino :-)
too many closeups that it's hard to really get a feel of what the place looks like :(
Hi Mbuesching :-)
The yellow print is a Carzou (my mom's from back in the day... I think it's a print from a museum). The other two prints are from a calendar that is printed on cardstock that I got at a yardsale.
The hutch is from Crate and Barrel.
Maddie
Love your space, especially the Rhino! May I ask where it came from?? I like the Hippo too btw, but more interested in the Rhino :)
The Rhino is currently available at Anthropologie online
AH! So beautiful! I wish we could come see it in person!
The funny little head is a Hippo! "Duh", to me.
Oh, and I did realize that from scrolling over the photo again, before I read the comments. Just goes to show you how much time it takes to really understand everything and not make snap judgements, (even if you should be working.) This is the personally homiest of the entries for me. Thanks for showing. Good luck!
Cool and refreshing, one of my favorites!
too cute!
love your hippo and the colors, yellow is so fresh and beautiful.
your hippo is so cute, where you got that?
The rocker is fantastic and I am in love with your little hippo...so cute! It is difficult to work with a small space but you two have made this very inviting.
