Who Lives Here: Matt & Jac Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Size: 630 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? The 100-year old building with its high ceilings, 12" deep window ledges, big south-facing windows, plaster walls, and maple floors. (...also the fact that it's only $425 a month.)

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Creating a multi-functional live/work space on a tight budget! We are both freelancers who work from home, love to entertain, cook, and have no other off-site storage to put seasonal things like our Christmas tree and camping gear. We designed and built the bar in the living room for a previous kitchen that needed an island, adding the wine rack later. Now it serves as a work surface, stores serving dishes, hides a modem and wireless router, and acts as a buffet table.
We share garden boxes that our neighbors built beside the building. With more produce we needed more counter space (hope to try canning this year!) so we added 5 lineal feet of counter across from the cabinets, which also serves as a breakfast spot and much-needed landing strip near the main outside entry.
We also don't have a TV so we use Matt's big computer monitor and roll it out on a desk with wheels for movie night. (Audio is wireless to the speakers above the bar.)

Commercial Flour Sa...
Tight budget? You'd never know it. This place is gorgeous.
Wow only $425 a month?!!!! I'm so jealous!! You home is absolutely gorgeous!
Would have liked to see more of the kitchen, and also the dining room and bedroom, but only because i loved what i saw here!
This is a beautiful apartment. Some nice ideas on how you are using the space. Everything is perfectly placed. It has a very monochrome feel, but that slight bit of pale blue and orange/nutmeg colors are really beautiful match to the woods.
Pet peeve-
Disclosing that you pay 450.00
might make your surround neighbors angry that they are subsidizing your rent
and I am jealous.
I love everything about this place.
Gah!
Beautiful.
yup... it's small and it's cool
Matt is hot. Love the pose.
I love the colors in the living room. It looks so relaxing!
Nice, patrick (the other one) - I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if anyone is gonna get up-in-arms about the exploitation and the use of him as a prop.
I think it's a wonderful use of props. ;)
Oh, beautiful apartment too.
I love the calming color palette, which makes the apartment seem so much larger than the stated square footage.
Sigh...finally. Too many of the entries this year feature spaces crammed with way too much stuff. Your space is obviously small, but nowhere near the cramped feeling of some of the previous SC tours thus far. This home is the epitome of small cool.
Now here's someone with his priorities in order:
1) Full bar
2) Plenty of TP
3) Just enough of everything else
Bravo!
I like it--makes me want to see the other 3 rooms.
Nice kitchen island, and I love the coffee area area too.
Beautiful!
Gorgeous... oh, the apartment too!
If Jac ever leaves...
go canadians - lovely space!
I agree with all the positive comments so far -- what a great space! Honestly, I haven't been too thrilled with the other entries so far (sorry). But this place looks so cozy and cool. Great job. And yes, Matt is super-cute...
$425.00 month? My 2nd apartment 28 years ago was $500.00 a month and was no where near as spacious as yours.
You've both done a wonderful job! Great home.
I lived in Winnipeg for 3 years going to school. What area is this? Downtown?
Do I EVER want a house tour!! I feel cheated by the 5 pic rule on this one!!
This place is perfection. I want to see more of it badly.
Now this is how you show someone living in the space. The woman-on-toilet apartment should take note.
THUMBS UP
where did you pick up those stools? the black and also the white ones? i'm looking for some good stools...
I don't know why people are so sensitive about rent, salaries, etc, but whatever.
Love your place! My apartment is exactly the same size, but a different layout, so I LOVE seeing the way you've used the space. Would love to see more photos of the rest of the place, and lucky you with the veggie garden, we rent a condo and the condo agreement says we can't put ANYTHING in the yard, boo :-(.
Winnipeg!!!! Yay. My hometown. SO many gorgeous old homes there (and cheap rent).
@heather77 - Exactly! I would add the fancy espresso machine on the windowsill - must have, must make room somewhere.
Gorgeous place. I think it's a great mix of some really contemporary things and some really rustic things, like the picture shelf in the living room. I love the silver lamp shade - normally I don't go for stuff like that, but it looks great here.
As for the "person in photo," at least he doesn't have his pants around his ankles.
Sheesh - anyone paying less than $1000/mo for a one bedroom that looks like this should consider themselves lucky. I would shout it from the rooftops too.
And the "boom box" above the bar, sold it for me. Don't see too many of those anymore. I would love to come here and party.
Thumbs up!
Two fellow 'peggers. Great to see. Love your place -- it's very tasteful and well edited. Best yet (as is the "prop"!).
Love it! Love the calming color tone, love the wood trim, love the big window, love the staircase "patio", love the breakfast area, love the living room, I wanna see more!!!
I just love everything of this aparment!
Winnipeg represent! I pay around 525 for my one bedroom but its right beside the legistlative building, a 1 bedroom on the top floor. Are you guys in the wolsley area? The space looks great!
Yes, they only pay $425 rent... but they have to live in Winnipeg :)
would love to see the bedroom, and workspace area too since you guys work at home! but great job on the other space. love your bathroom :) toilet rolls out in the open wouldnt work in mine though - too much condensation!
I'm in Winnipeg, too...love your place! Great job! My very favourite so far! You're in West Broadway/Wolseley?
And @danikaleighdain...you made me LOL. And write "LOL."
The phrase "effortlessly stylish" may be overused, but it fits this place perfectly. Bravo! We should all be so skillful.
lovely
HOW is rent still that cheap in winnipeg!! I can't find any one bedrooms that are cheaper than 750 in Regina right now... and most of those are hideous...
i grew up in the 'peg, in river heights!! sooo cool to see this city represent! love your place - congrats
btw: i agree that a full house tour is in order
wow - thanks for the comments, everyone.
Yeah, I'm one of those annoying people that has to brag about the bargains I find whether it be shoes or tuition. it's a curse.
This place is so cheap because it's in a neighborhood that has a really bad reputation. (but amazing ethnic restaurants!)
…for you curious locals, that would be near Ellice at Maryland. Never a dull moment.
The barstools in the kitchen are on sale from the automotive dept of canadian tire.
The cream barstools are vintage from Hoopers.
The lamp is thrifted from mcc, then painted. the shade is heavy chrome art paper that I added.
lol @danikaleighdain: you must be from Toronto. yeah, we're like your younger sibling who lives in your shadow but got all the personality. ;)
Is anyone keeping track of globes in these entries?? They are EVERYWHERE.
And, as much as I like your space and your husband, I am not a total fan of some of the comments you've made about some of your competition.
come now, patrick.
you may not be aware of the good-humoured rivalry between the 2 cities. we all love toronto, it's no secret.
i would live there in a heartbeat.
Real and simple, I like it. So clever that small balcony/staircase, treated as another room. And the use of mirrors too...
I want to see more of that kitchen, please!!!
I'm afraid I have no witty comeback for the Winnipeg/personality comment--I live in downtown Toronto, and my apartment is infinitely less fantastic (and more generic) than this!
Easily one of my favorites so far.
jac--
I was referring to comments you've posted on Small/Cool competitor entries, not anything you've had to say here.
I don't really see what you're referring to patrick - looked back at jac's old comments and I don't see anything offensive or nasty. Just a lot of constructive criticism always tempered with a "but great job" or other compliment. Seems the best way to do it if you ask me.
Also jac, would love a lampshade tutorial if that's homemade.
Other commentors whose comments I've seen you call out (like yul with his ridiculous and ignorant comments about "gay" paintings) I have completely agreed with you on . . .
azaleasmoke--
I TOTALLY Agree that anything posted has NOT been to that level of extreme, for sure! Did not mean to imply it was that bad at all!
I guess I am just hypersensitized when contestants comment on other entries (since I was a contestant, way back when!!!), and yes, even with the negative, jac has been fairly graceful.
Well I completely understand that, and frankly am all for being more sensitive than not when it come to small cool, because some people can get downright NASTY! I completely redid most of my apartment since entering last year (some of the rooms hadn't really been touched at that point) but didn't enter because I was still too busy loving it to put it out there for the firing squad :)
I love this home! It has clean lines while still being filled with personality! Great job!
I must also agree with Patrick about Matt. :)
Is that couch from West Elm?
Go Winnipeg! I live in NYC now, but Winnipeg is my home town. Kudos to you for making such a nice home in such an...interesting neighborhood. :) (Well all I know about it is I wasn't allowed to go there by myself as a kid...)
I'm voting for this small cool because the comments were so entertaining :) But seriously, I love it when I can see the actual floorplan of a place so I can instantly read the feng shui. You've done pretty well with it except for the "poison arrow" long hallway aimed right at your heads while you sleep. I'd suggest a floor to ceiling curtain placed across the hall at the juncture where you turn to the left to go into the living/office space. I'd make it heavy not flimsy fabric and then I'd swag it to the side. This would prevent the ch'i from zooming down to the bedroom, add some privacy to the bedroom private areas, and could be open or closed as needed. Matt, what do you think? ;-) ;-) ;-)
hmmm maybe that's Jac - nice place
Warm, inviting and serene. My favorite so far. Go Winnipeg!
Yay Winnipeg! I moved to Toronto for school and I miss cheap rent. So beautiful, and definitely an interesting neighbourhood. I'm also impressed that you have found some beautiful things in our home city. I'll try to bring some of your fun design to my Torontonian box.
425????? are you serious? I pay 500 for a basement apartment on notre dame and just recently they found human remains beside my bfi bin. this makes me feel really depressed :(
