Who Lives Here: Meredith and one person-sized dog (her Great Dane, Jersey)
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Size: 575 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Hmmm. Probably the re-purposed hutch, which I had wired for cable and turned into a built-in entertainment center. I love that it took on a whole new, 21st century function--which I can hide entirely when not in use!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The space is long and narrow and was definitely set up for "specific" functions--living in front, dining in back, etc.--so arranging it in a way that suited my lifestyle took some re-thinking. I axed the idea of a formal dining room and opted to set up my living space at the back of the condo. My big dresser wouldn't fit in the bedroom, so it took on a new life as a buffet piece in the entry way (and is still filled with my clothes).
My mom was probably my biggest resource throughout the process--we spent a lot of time shopping, sourcing, and throwing around ideas. While she didn't buy in to all of them at the time, she was a great help in talking things through until they made sense in my own head!

Nice contrast, nice use of colour throughout. Not sure about the colour in the bathroom - Is it as Pepto-pink as it looks?
Earthy and cozy. I like.
I bet it's comfort-city at night. Appears much larger than 575.
Love the colors, warm (original?) woodwork. A definite finalist in my book.
Why is there a mirror blocking the window?
Love the colors. Crooked rugs are a pet peeve though. There's no need for that, it just looks sloppy.
Makes me miss my old Chicago apartment. Such great old style in those buildings.
I love the arrangement of artwork over the sofa. The small frames within the big frame is an idea I've tossed around but never tried. You've inspired me to give it a go.
I was going to ask how tall is your dog and then I see you have Great Dane which explains the super high dog dish holder.
theserovingeyes, which picture has a view of the bathroom? i don't see it anywhere.
le_sacre, you can see the bathroom in the first picture. It's all the way to the left.
I like the white chair in the living room. There was a similar one in one of the Spring Cure posts, but the owner didn't know who made it. Can someone identify this one for me, please?
oh, thanks! apparently i'm blind today. :-/
i do think these color choices are well thought out.
Gosh, I hope the bathroom is as Pepto pink as it looks -- love it! I would have gone all the way in the main rooms and painting the ceilings the same color as the walls.
Love the rich colors and wood. Very cozy.
(However, I am disappointed that we didn't get to see the person-sized dog.)
I am so confused on the layout--the bathroom and front door are not showing up in the floor plan, and I don't see the bedroom in the pictures. I am trying to place where the first picture is.
Am I missing something?
oh i liked it! lots of character...but I would have LOVED to see the Great Dane!
ozzes character and charm. you didn't clutter this place but instead have a nice collection of vintage looking things with COLOR! yay!
I agree with nytenglee, wish that the great dane was in these photos! (Used to have two of them!)
Cozy space. Totally unpretentious. I too want to see the dog.
Do tell - where did you get the chair with the wood arms and white cushions? Love it!
Points off for not having pet in photos! :)
Love the kitchen!!! It looks huge...well done!
Love the Pink, Love the white bureau too.
I absolutely love your furniture but what is up with that mirror in the window?
Warm! Homey. Jersey must have a blast with the long rectangle o'wood floor, though I fear for...well...anything you leave on any surface below waist level. (Next time, be shameless and include puppy, for the puppy vote is shamefully easily swayed!)
Looks a little cluttered to me, but I'm giving you a thumb's up, because I like most of your stuff. Just feel like a little editing is in order. But more importantly, your color scheme is gorgeous!
I really like the blue walls contrasting with the lovely wood tone on the door and the yellow table next to it.
thanks for the comments! bathroom is actually orchid, not pepto-pink. though i would love both equally!
okay--more questions answered:
mirror: i wanted to keep the windows blind-free, so that was my out-of-the-box, multi-purpose solution to both lend some privacy in the front of the house and incorporate a big mirror into the space.
white/wooden chair: picked that one up for $6 at a flea market. unfortunately, it doesn't have any manufacturer labels, so i'm not sure where/when it's from. was definitely reupholstered at some point over the years though.
layout: somehow managed to leave the bathroom off the floor plan (oops!), but it's adjacent to the living room, which is the first photo in the series. front door is the one between the bookcase and the desk in that same photo. and in retrospect, i would have included bedroom photos as well--it was hard to narrow down to 5!
dog: jersey, too, is disappointed she is not on AT. and shanalulu, you are absolutely correct in that almost everything below waist-level bears some kind of chew mark. so don't look too closely. =)
Love the color of the desk with the walls- its so fantastic.
But, no pictures of Jersey?!
WHY?!!!!
where did you get the dish holder for your dog?
stink: good question--i don't recall! but i know got it online, and it was originally black. (spray-painted it white.) if you google "elevated dog feeder" you can find similar styles.
Very cozy! I love this!
That coffee table is really interesting. Home-made or a vintage find?
the coffee table was actually my grandmothers, then made its way to my mom, then to me. they purchased it from a craftsman at a flea market in new york sometime in the late-60s, early-70s.
Great place! I would have given a thumbs up if I'd seen it when the voting was open, sorry. :( But I agree that this is really homey and unpretentious, while at the same time very stylish and well thought out. That is so hard to do! I really love the blue paint, the rug in the living room, the woodwork, and the layout of everything. The vertical dish display in the kitchen is also really cool - I've never seen that before. I do wish we saw the bedroom, though! House tour?
Super lovely colours, and a great small space for a big dog. I wouldn't have pictured a marmaduke-like dog in a space like that without seeing space for her to stretch out, and those floors look lovely!
Great balance of furnishings and openness.
I like the empty silver frame with 2 pictures hung inside of it.
There looks like there is some empty wasted floor space between the book shelf and the white dresser.
I think the rug is put diagnol on purpose and is not crooked like one comment suggested. I like it like that.
