Who Lives Here: Natalie Location: San Francisco, California Size: 285 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home?I absolutely love our bed alcove, which was ultimately why we chose this studio. As soon as I saw it, I pictured a cozy spot to relax in and couldn't wait to get started decorating it. I wanted to create an intimate space and help define it as separate from the living area. I added a multitude of pillows for coziness and heavy curtains to add elegance and also block out the morning light.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? My biggest challenge in furnishing the space was providing enough seating while not dwarfing the apartment with large pieces. Luckily, I stumbled upon a small telephone bench on a local sidewalk. It fit perfectly in the bay window and all it needed was a new seat and upholstery. I also wanted to find a couch that was proportional to the space, but long enough for my boyfriend to lie down on. I chose a 76" couch from Macy's which ended up being a perfect fit.

Hi, i'm getting an error message that the voting is closed but i think this was just posted. Thanks!
love the place!
where's the rug from?
Great idea with the bed alcove and nice touches.
this is really only 285sqft?? looks way bigger, good job!!!
What a darling place, and in San Francisco. Lucky you - pay no attention to the haters who will say it is too neat! Great single-girl space, thanks for sharing.
I'm getting the same message when I try to vote........
voting is working now - sorry for slight delay!
One comment I would like to add is that it would look better and function better if you got two long large pillows and just keep a few of the small pillows for the bed. It would look better, something to lean otherwise its a sea of pillows does that drive you nuts every day, too each is own.
"pay no attention to the haters who will say it is too neat!"
What?
I love that alcove!!! This is perfect for a small space. It provides privacy and is so cozy! What a great job!
This is very pretty, sweet almost. Although, I'm not blown away by the choice of fabrics (pillows, rugs) and the pictures above the couch seem a little too high, the scale of your furnishings are perfect for your space and you do have good taste aka I wouldn't turn my nose at living here.
this looks a lot bigger than 285 sq feet - it appears to be light, airy and spacious and filled with just enough furniture and knick knacks. good luck!!
Awesome place. I totally love the alcove and everything else!
I love your alcove and the way you hung the frames over your couch!
I would never have guessed the studio had such a small footprint. You did an excellent job with it.
Just love this. Well done for such a tiny space.
Fantastic!
Love the gossip piece, though the oversized circle pillow may over shadow its splendor a bit?
Adorable! I love the telephone table!
I would have loved this even without seeing the square footage but now I am REALLY impressed!
Lovely apartment. Especially love that adorable telephone table. Great find.
P.S. Please consider lowering the painting above the couch. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Beautiful job, lovely place. Your pics are well done and informative. Thanks for sharing.
am I the only one who can't stop looking at this one?
This is great! I am really impressed!
Love this one!! Great restraint.
I love it! I think its amazingly classy but not at all fussy. Please do share the origins of the rug. I can't stop looking at it!
A_MAZING!!!!!! i cant stop looking at this one either, pier723. the couch is adorable and the alcove is divine! just looking at it it makes me want to take afternoon nap
Wow I absolutely LOVE this! Love the Moroccan notes in the rug and the fabric on the bathroom sink. Love the colors, all of it, even the view out the window looks great. LOVE the bed alcove. Really great use of space and bravo for keeping it clutter-free!
I admit, I probably would have been sold immediately on seeing the bed alcove too, despite the place being TEENY-tiny. Very beautiful.
I am in LOVE! Can I give you my phone number...if you ever decide to move out please call me. I will pack up my car and move to SF right away!
The rug is from West Elm as are a lot of the textiles. I would like to see a few less West Elm references. Soothing color-palette. Well-tailored and cozy, would be perfect for a single young lady.
So beautiful - love it all! I love the alcove - I want one!!
I adore the Greek key sofa pillows! You must divulge their origin. The whole place has such a girly glow (in a really good way), but still has contrast and punch where needed. Makes me want to try more bold, masculine prints to give a soft look some graphic edge. Nice job!
every studio should have a sleeping alcove like yours! well done...
Thanks for all the great comments! Just for the record: I made a stencil and painted a cheap Ikea rug using washable white fabric paint. And the pillows were from Ross! Believe it or not :)
So beautiful!
Whoa! You did an amazing job!
You made the rug yourself??!! HA! Amazing! Your place is perfect. Honestly
Lovely room.
I love that coffee table, where did you get that?
This is not only organized. It is actually lovely.
Such a yummy cozy place. The space near the window are mice
Gosh -- this place is even smaller than my tiny place in San Francisco, and so much nicer!
The coffee table in from Urban Outfitters, not only great for clothes but also a great inexpensive resource for studio-sized furniture and accessories!
OMG OMG I can't believe how much I love this apartment. Who cares about minor details like the picture height and pillow fabrics? All I know is I want to live there!!! I love how you solved the little corner bathroom sink "problem." Probably gained a bit of storage, too. The whole place is darling and inviting with sophistication as well. Great job!
I am absolutely in love with your studio. The paint color is divine!
This is beautifully done, you've made it look easy when it wasn't (like handpainting the rug). Also I can see that every single element is geared to making the place look bigger (which is why a lot of people are surprised at it's footprint). I would assume that the contentious art placement over the sofa is also calculated to make the place look bigger. You've definitely got my vote :)
great rug - where did you get it from? Just the right shade of green
I just want to run in and jump on your bed - it looks so cosy and intimate
I really dig that bed alcove!
This is one of the most amazing small spaces that I have seen! The did a wonderful job!
love the sink solution!
ooo! me lovey! where is that coffee table from, if i may ask?
ahem, i see now that it is from urban outfitters. lovely!
Ah, the Choe couch. I have the same one and it is perfect for small spaces! Nice place you have here.
Great place! Where do you store all of your clothes, etc.? I'm not seeing any closets on the floorplan.
@lilkimbo, floorplan shows that closet is right next to the bathroom. =)
I'm in love with this little studio....absolutely adorable! If you ever move out, you must call me. :)
Very nice. You did a great job with the use of space. I love that there is still a full functioning kitchen in a small place.
That first picture is breathtaking. This is a lot of chic for 285 sq ft.
I love this place! It's very original, and doesn't look crammed or like a showroom for one particular furniture store!
The only thing I'm not too nuts about is the print mixing in the bathroom.
You made your space look so big and grand! I love the ambiance you created in the room. A mixture of zen mixed with modern twist! TALENTED
This is so sweet!
I wish your kitchen was just as bright and airy as the rest of your beautiful place! I still gave it a thumbs up, though :)
That's a gorgeous apartment. I'm so envious! What a great use of the space. Love the living room and bedroom alcove.
nice space. i think we're going to see a lot of those west elm duvet covers in tours this year...
I am sooo jealous of your telephone bench. I've wanted one so bad but I couldn't justify using that much space for something with so little function. My apartment is about 200 square feet bigger than yours though, so if you can make it work then so can I! I also may be copying your rug idea. Love your couch too!
The unlikely meeting of Luxury and Necessity, and the romance that ensued.
Well done!
Really like the alcove treatment.
Hi Natalie,
Great use of your space - how fun this must have been. You must be too young to have any "stuff" accumulated yet :-)
Good luck!!
I bet a lot of sweat equity went into this one. Great job.
LOVE the bed nook!
While the decorating of this apt is not my style personally, I think it's extremely well done, and even though it's reminiscent of "West Elm", her personality is very evident as well!
And don't get me started on that alcove bed...and that telephone bench was quite a find! Great job overall with such a small space.

This is a wonderful use of space! Everything looks great and is so cohesive and well put together. The bed alcove is pretty amazing, too. Where do you store clothes and personal items? Does everything go in the closet or is there a dresser or shelf somewhere? I am still trying to wrap my head around how much style you managed to pack into a tiny space, it is very hard to fathom. It must take a lot of restraint to have so few personal items (books, cds, papers, etc.) I love all the natural light too.
Voting is closed but I wish you luck-its wonderful!!!!
This place is wonderful! Are there 2 people living here - you use "our" and "we" in the summary. Wow - if so, it's even more amazing!
lovely. really like the draperies with the black ribbon tieback. curiously, do you rent or own? nice job!
If the sofa is petite, the art may be hung high to avoid collisions with tall peoples' heads!
Love it!
Luscious! Thanks for sharing.
;-)
I'm getting the error message, too.
Can someone link to that rug? Thanks!
Thanks again for all the wonderful feedback! Maplesyrup, yes I live here with my boyfriend as well! Who is 6'2 which also explains the height of the photos! RobinH1 you're right, I'm only 21, so I haven't accumulated too much yet :) Sprucedecor we've actually rented for less than a year now. Curtains are from Ross and I made the tie-backs with remnant fabric. Livc thanks so much for your comment! We raised up the bed on 4 cinder blocks which allows lots of room for extra storage. And our closet would be a mess if it weren't for the Container Store ;)
@nataliermoore -- where is the rug from? It is beautiful.
L O V E this!!! Very cosy! And somehow you made it look roomy!! Great job!
Because I live in something almost as small in Los Angeles I truly appreciate this entry. It is nearly impossible to be this neat, even for a photo shoot, in a space this small and so I commend Natalie. I think she's achieved the impossible. One learns the true meaning of organization and editing.
Bravo.
i love this place for the nice subtle mixing of patterns and for a few personal reasons:
- the couch: its cute and my sister owns it. (http://www.thelateafternoon.com/apartment-love-nicole)
- the white, ruched duvet: because i own it! (http://www.thelateafternoon.com/a-work-in-progress-part-ii)
the similarity in our decorating style is amazing!
thats so funny thelateafternoon because the duvet cover i had before this one was your ikea ginkgo leaf one which inspired the rest of the bright greens and muted blues in my apartment! great minds do think alike ;)
btw your sisters place is adorable!
oops! sorry that was me on the last comment accidentally logged in on my boyfriend's account :P
and thanks to everyone who's gotten my apartment this far in the competition!!
Where did you get your couch? And how did you attach the fabric to the bathroom sink and what kind of storage unit did you put under the sink? I have the same problem at my apartment. Thanks!
it wont let me vote!!!! i signed up and it wont let me do the thumbs up :( but i vote for you lady!!!
The couch is Chloe from Macy's. I attached the fabric with sticky Velcro (available at Walgreen's) which makes the fabric easily removable for cleaning. The storage unit I already had from the Container Store; it's just a set of plastic drawers which happened to fit perfectly under the pipes. You can easily make the skirt with a yard of remnant fabric and some iron-on hemming tape like I did!
Thanks!
This is beautiful! I love the alcove with the drapes. It's amazing what you can do even with a space this small. I also love this rug! I bought a similar one at Rugs USA. It's cute, very affordable, and matches my room great! http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/the-rug-market-hyperion/beige/16349010-18028.html
Beautiful job! You kept it so uniform throughout, and worked wonders with the tiny square footage. You have a gift:)
Can someone please tell me where the duvet cover from?
I love it!
Love the bed alcove. I would crawl in there and never come out. I also really like the fabric on the cusion of the telephone table.
Having a 6 foot 2 boyfriend sounds great except you will have to supervise his picture hanging next time. Way too high. The pictures....not him.
For additional privacy:
Try sheer curtains over the alcove.
Face the couch towards the windows.
Tables are not really needed:
Replace books with a handheld computer.
Try floor lamps.
Replace a desk with a clipboard.
Store items in pull-out baskets under a bed, couch or chair.
Store blankets in pillowcases.
Store towels/cosmetic basket on open shelving over the toilet.
Store handy items in a tote bag on a hook.
Curious to know how the alcove was built. I love it and would love to replicate the look. Awesome job.
