What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? One of my favorite things about our house is its character. The house was built in the 1920's and most of its handcrafted charms have gone untouched.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? One challenge we have faced with furnishing our home has been to find appropriately sized furniture for each room. Standard sized furniture can get large and cumbersome in our small spaces. I find that furniture with minimal bulk and simple clean lines help a small space feel appropriately furnished and allow for the illusion of space. A few of my favorite places for shopping would be Room & Board, IKEA and craigslist.

I can't vote thumbs up at the moment, but I love this space. The wall colors are yummy.
Really uncomplicated and beautiful. I love the bedspread - where is it from? The brown color in the dining is lovely!
The duvet is Ikea, discontinued.
so cute! i'd like to know where the rug in the living room is from. great color!
I would vote thumbs up, but it says voting is closed :( Love everything about your place
Thumbs up has been deactivated for some reason?
Love this! What is that blue paint in the bedroom?
It says voting is locked, How can that be this just went up?
I would vote a thumbs up if I could. It's just gone up, how can voting for it be closed?
very nice space. it's inviting.
love the paint colors. what a clean, very clean place.
Voting is now open and working
My favorite so far...
LOVE IT!! Voting is working again.
love it. makes me miss mpls. want to see the porch...
love the color of the rug in the living room. Could you pass on where you got this rug?
Love that dining table.
this is as neat as a button. but doens't look like anyone 'lives' here. you're right, there is great character in the structure...love the arch way.
one question was in the kitchen where the yellow paint just stops. could you tile that part too? love all the counter space tho.
liking it all....
Perfect shade of grey on the walls! What brand is it?
Very sophisticated use of color -- could you share the brands/names?
Beautiful!! It makes me calmer just looking at it.
Lovely. I congratulate your restrained hand. A place this uncluttered and sophisticated make look simple, but is not easy to accomplish. I'm very biased when it comes to uncluttered places, because this is my personal preference. Great use of color. Thumbs up. Hope you make it to the finals.
Ooh, I LOVE the bedroom color! You have a gorgeous home!
Love your house! It has got such a nice layout and space. Although it is 825 sq ft, I feel like it is at least 1000 sq ft! I live in a 2-level townhouse that is "claimed" to be nearly 1300 sq ft, BUT the kitchen, dining room, bathroom and living room are soooooooo small! The only good thing is I have 2 larger bedrooms. But I'd rather have a larger living room or if the bedrooms are divided into 3...
Oh did I say that I love your choice of wall colors too! Oh also the clean & simple looking! My favorite so far! Thumbs up!
The colour in the bedroom is such a nice surprise. I love it. Very well edited and lovely space.
is that a real hans wegner dining set? i am going to try not to be jealous.
is the chair in the living room vintage? i like it too.
and whats holding the door to the patio open?
i am just a bit crazy about vintage furniture.
wish i could give you ten thumbs up - excellent place
Oh please share the name of the paint color in the living room and where the media cabinet/credenza is from.
Thanks for the great comments everyone! I am super stoked on the feed back and for all of your votes!
We live in a pretty standard Minneapolis bungalow, although it is a bit on the small side. We make due with the space we have and find it rather cozy. Especially during those cold MN winters!
Here are the answers to your questions:
Paint:
Bedroom: Sherwin Williams - Cloudburst

Dining Room: Behr - Coconut Shell
Living Room: Behr - Porpoise
The duvet cover and living room rug are courtesy of IKEA.

The dining set was one of my super awesome finds from craigslist that I HAD to have! I really wish I could tell you that this was undoubtedly a Hans Wegner dining set but the truth is I have no idea who made it. There are no marks or indications of a manufacturer. If anyone has any ideas or leads for me I would be eternally grateful!
The chair in the living room and the chair that seems to be holding the porch door open are matching set of vintage lounge chairs that I acquired.
I hope I covered everything! Let me know if I've missed something, I'm happy to share.
Thanks again everyone!
Love the kitchen countertop, looks great in there!
Baby, dog, cat and it's all so neat and clean. Kudos on your small, cool and very lovely home.
Where did you find the credenza?
fantastic dining set.
Adorable. Living room would feel a bit sparse to me, in terms of furnishings, but kudos on having a daughter (albeit still a wee one), and not living in an explosion of Baby Stuff and Brightly-Hued Plastic.
Is it me or is the dining room sort of inconveniently situated? Great to have porch access, but you have to carry plates, glasses, dishes, condiments, etc. from kitchen through living room and back? I don't see anywhere else to eat, and with a small place you probably use it, but is it bothersome?
It is not you shanalulu, the proximity of the dining room to the kitchen is not ideal and a fair amount of meals have been had on the sofa. But when you live in a house that is 825 sq. ft., turning a corner to enter the dining area isn't that big of a deal. I suppose if we lived in a larger house the distance from the dining table to the kitchen would be the same as it is now.
Before the baby came we actually used this space as an office but I thought it important that we have a place to eat meals together as a family.
Scoot and Sappy, the credenza was another one of my craigslist finds. I just love finding good solid furniture at fair prices! My credenza search went on for about 6 months and I was so excited to find this one!
yay craigslist dining set. amazing find! i had that ikea duvet cover and i used the crap out of it! in the end all that was left were scraps of fabric! i just really liked the print in that color, and it looks really nice against those walls.
OMG I LOVE your dining table! It is to die for, I am so having apartment-envy right now just looking at it.
beautiful. i am obsessed with that chocolate brown wall color in the dining room!
On some level its unfair to compare this space to some of the tiny spaces shown; but I am about to do this anyway...
This space is spare but looks put together; something many of the other spaces simply haven't managed to do. Some of this is due to the many more square feet this home has compared to those in most of the other categories. But I think a great deal of this is due to well chosen paint color and furniture.
This is a nice space. I personally would like to see a bit more artwork; but I think that is just my bias not a flaw in the house.
Almost every other small space contestant should view this apartment for design inspiration. Sure it doesn't have space saving ideas featured but it does illustrate a great use of color and design and prove you can make a small space look both open and inviting.
So many aspects of your home are going in my inspiration file. I also have a small, 1920s midwestern home and spend considerable time browsing Craigslist for high-quality used pieces.
You have created wonderful atmosphere with your paint color choices, and you have just enough, and not too much, furniture.
Your kitchen, in particular, has exactly the open and comfortable feel I want to create in mine.
Thanks for sharing your home.
Love that brown paint in the dining area. Your whole place is awesomely decorated. Great job!
Oh, this is just lovely! So lovely, in fact, that I finally created an account for the express purpose of giving a thumbs-up to my fellow twin-citian (I live in St. Paul).
Did you make the living room curtains yourself? Because they rule.
The Kitchen is my favorite part. Butcher block, open shelving, bright light, white cabinets... LOVE!
This is definitely going into my inspiration file, as we hope to buy an older home in the next couple of years. Most of the beautiful homes in this area were built in the 20s as well and have similar features.
The color is my favorite part. I am so anti-white and anti-bland. I love that you have used rich, vibrant colors without being LOUD and ANNOYING. Really great home. :)
WOW! Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments! Your thumbs are much appreciated! Especially yours Happy Hermit!
I did make the curtains myself. The fabric is Columbine Azure from the Deer Valley Collection by Joel Dewberry. I have plans in the works for curtains for the dining room but am still on the look out for the perfect compliment to the Columbine fabric. I didn't want to get too matchy matchy so I haven't selected anything else from the Deer Valley line, although I have to say, I am in LOVE with it!
@laundryhamper: I have that carpet in green. It's the IKEA Hemmet rug.
Your colors are just so wonderful . . . rich, sophisticated, simple. It does seem bigger than 825. Beautiful space.
illusion of space because the space itself is almost empty!! where's the personality? the character? I find it lacklustre, boring and bland. like a furnished rental suite. sorry.
I do find it very restrained, even minimal, and I really want to see some more art on the walls. But you have perfectly achieved what you set out to do, I think, even if to my eyes it looks a bit empty. Colour accomplishes a lot, as well as few well chosen pieces of furniture-- but if it was me I'd add a few paintings for some drama.
I don't think there is anything awkward about the dining room placement at all. I'd come to dinner there!
And I'm sure husband/boxer/baby/cat provide adequate life and personality where the interiros do not need to do *all* the work. This seems like the perfect backdrop for a lovely little life.
The only thing I'd change is the ceiling fan over the dining table. Chandelier, perhaps? Noguchi pendant?
Love this place, and love Minnesota!
Lovely home! You really let the character shine through and your taste is lovely. Thank you for sharing!
I really love how spacious this place feels, and how you have unusual but beautiful color themes in each room. I'd love to live here!
