Small Cool 2010: Sarah & Frank's Design Savvy DIY

Little Division #14

Who Lives Here: Sarah & Frank
Location: Short Hills, New Jersey
Size: 630 square feet

What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? The windows in the living room. They make the room seem larger (which is important given that at 19' x 14' it serves as living area, dining room and home office). They also keep our apartment light and bright all year round. This is my first apartment outside of the city, and I love the trees and flowers that incorporate themselves into the room as a result of those windows.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? There were (are) many challenges, most of which come down to our small budget. As I'm sure most design-savvy AT readers will recognize, a lot of our furniture comes from IKEA. Some items also came from our respective childhood homes, and needed renovation. For example: the chairs from the dining set that we inherited came covered in stained, off-white vinyl, and we ended up reupholstering them ourselves. There are many other DIY touches, including the wall paint, the throw pillows on the couch, and the speakers in the bedroom. I pulled some of my inspiration from sets I witnessed being designed where I work in the Art Departments of New York's film industry, but I also get many ideas from Apartment Therapy. My boyfriend has the whole apartment wired to perfection, I know with at least a little help from AT's sister site, Unplggd.
