Who Lives Here: Sarah and her Yorkshire Terrier Location: Tempe, Arizona Size: 916 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I love the use of reclaimed materials. The wood floors are the coolest: pine from the 1800s once used for railroad trestles, salvaged from the bottom of the Salt Lake in Utah. My dining table uses scrap metals and was custom built at Deluxe Customs, a hot rod shop in Tempe, AZ.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Storage is always a challenge in a small space but when going for a modern look, it's even more challenging. Luckily, Tim McCormac of Temac.com, was an absolutely amazing contractor who helped me create storage spaces in everything that I wanted custom built for my place. In fact, the seats lift up on the banquette to reveal storage while the bed is on hinges and easily lifts up so I have plenty of things stowed away! This challenge was easily overcome by also having well designed custom cabinets to help define the space.

things i like: concrete ceiling and exposed hvac, and the wood floors.
but, as a whole it reminds me of a model unit in a trendy gentrified urban neighborhood development with a sign saying "luxury units starting at the low $900,000s" place...
that was a mouth full.
to sum up: i like some of the general moves, not the details.
Why would anyone put lighting under the base cabinets in the kitchen? This is probably the place in my house that gets the dirtiest - why would I highlight it. And light there is not remotely useful. What a waste of energy.
I like the base cabinet lighting. It creates a soft, l modern vibe, and I can imagine that it would look great in the evening with dimmed lights, creating a modern, lounge-type feeling.
You've done a great job, Sarah. When I first looked at the photos, I was sure that this is a man's creative: it has a masculine, calculated look. You must have lots of gay design advisors :-)
I freakin' love the kitchen and bathroom!
I like the bathroom. =)
If lisa_oak had lighting under her base cabinets, maybe it wouldn't get so dirty! It's not my style either but don't mind it in someone else's apt. I think it actually would be more useful for cleaning than for lighting.
The kitchen looks great but not sure about the psych hospital padded room look in the dining area.
I don't care for much of anything in the bedroom, esp that painting!
I do like the exposed hvac and electrical, the paint, the floors. Nice job overall.
"Why would anyone put lighting under the base cabinets in the kitchen?"
Because they're clean? And the only way it's not useful is if you never use the kitchen.
So basically, lisa_oak's biggest complaint is lighting under the cabinets? Give. Me. A. Break.
Overall, I think it looks superb.
That padded wall is there because you're the kind of lady who likes to throw dishes, am I right? I would throw a big old worn in, broke down chesterfield in the living room, just to keep em guessing. Dead sexy bedroom.
floors, kitchen, bathroom, oh my! love it all...
Your kitchen and washroom are to die for!
The kitchen/banquette and bathroom are drop dead gorgeous. You get my vote.
I work in marketing an architecture firm where I stare at interior shots all day long (and I mean ALL. DAY. LONG.) Don't get me wrong, you have a sweet place, but it looks like just another staged shot of an apartment unit to use on a glossy brochure. It needs more character!
I do, however, like the orange! And my dog is jealous that your dog gets its own couch! Oh and your bedroom is very, very, oooh la la sexy.
The bedroom reminds me of "St. Elmo's Fire".
I like the padded banquette.
It seems like staged shot of an apartment for marketing usage. It needs to be more real. Where is the dog actor?
If "character" means a lot of stuff on the walls and every conceivable surface area, who wants it? There's a reason why places are staged as such, no? I prefer the modern, clean, uncluttered look of this place.
I like the lighted cabinet base. But this home is lacking something...Needs some character.
It has a model unit vibe, fer sher. I do like a lot of it, though, and I'm not a fan of either modern or orange, so there's saying something!
And another vote for "why the toekick lighting?" Sarah didn't give a reason for it, so I'm wondering "why?" and "really?" Lighting at floor level (fairly limited in usefulness) because it looks cool is one of those things that give me pause, so I'm hoping that there's a functional reason behind it.
Love your bathroom...Thumbs up for that!
love the clean look, love the kitchen floor level, lighting the dinning table and bench nice idea but i am not sure the back of the bench needs to be this high, it is a little overbaring even if the cieling is high. The general space is not and it takes up a lot of space , plus the white colour not so good with the oragne wall. The TV embeded in the cocrete colour wall is a very nice idea loved it but isn't it too high? or is it a picture? Loved the bathroom very slik .
the bedroom a little kitch with the blue light arounf the head board and the art work on the wall .
Breathtaking.
love it sarah! the bathroom looks like a dream. nice job :)
This is at the top of the class for sleek, sparse and modern.
(It reminds me of a winner in London who had a shiny, blue kitchen.)
The lighting seems genius to me, since giving pleasure and making the mood is a function of lighting as much as illuminating the reading of fine print. Brilliant!
Is that CB2 sleeper comfy? I am thinking about getting one for my tiny place. Thanks!
Did I just time travel? Not that it's a bad thing, but it looks like Less Than Zero could have been filmed here.
Go Sarah. :) Your home is so smart, clean, and progressive. Every detail is PERFECT! The floors and lighting are my favorite, amazing.
I think you have done a nice job. I love the padded banquette and love the lighting and color in the bathroom. The old refinished wood floors look great. However, over all this does seem like the kinda place that sorta just came looking finished and pretty, like a brand new condo development, and you maybe didn't have to do much to it, but I may be wrong.
Amazing floors, like dulce de leche.
The lady in the painting is "crushing your head".
It does have a very 80's vibe and I love it. Guess 80's is vintage now.
Gorgeous!
The kitchen and bathroom make the place. I even like the under cabinet lighting. Now for the bad, everything else. The worst art i have seen on apartmenttherapy. Incredibly tacky.
I like the under-cabinet lighting; it contributes to the cabinetry's "floating" effect.
Love the neon behind the headboard. The art is cool. Makes me want to film a porn in there. Sexy.
Wow!
Mishmosh: by "character" I meant adding some personal touches to the home. If this place had any character, it reflects that of the architect and/or developer. I hate clutter just as much as the next person, but to get my vote, I need to be convinced that there was a lot more effort by the homeowner to make this home THEIR home.
prettiest toilet i have ever seen...and i am not being silly...i really do like it!
Oh Sarah I'm deeply jealous of your spot-on orange and banquette. Two things I've never gotten right in my entire life.
:)
Love the Picture in the bedroom! Where is it from?????
HOT
Pretty face but no soul.
It's not my taste, but it's certainly cool. I'm thrilled to see a place without a collection of Pez and knick-knacks and an entry from the Southwest that's not all tourist art.
I LOVE this space. One small design item that would drive me crazy though: guests have to go through the bedroom to use the bathroom!
Love the living room! Especially the orange wall. The high banquette would not be to my taste, but it's cool that it continues up the wall. Quite a statement! Am I the only one who thinks the matching dog bed is adorable?
Love the kitchen. One of my favorite entries so far!
Thanks for the comments!
It took 6 months to gut and completely reconstruct this loft. The details are breathtaking, photos don't do it justice and almost everything is custom (my bathroom mirror even!). To see some before and after check out www.temac.com - and view the gallery under "Residential". Truly has been an incredible transformation.
The bedroom art is by an artist in LA, www.anjav.com and the living room art is by a local Phoenix artist, Damian Robinson - www.damianrobinsongallery.com - his work is brilliant.
It's a very personal process to build and furnish your dream home - so putting it out there for others to see is a bit nerve-wracking! However, I love the AT community feedback, it's all been great and I'm excited to be a part of this contest.
GOAT!!!
I've had this on my mind all day. It is beautiful enough to make me think about mending my magpie ways and becoming a minimalist. The materials and craftsmanship of this apt. are so rich and elegant. Love this.
loves it!!! Awesome.
I looked and stared at this place for a while.
Then I realized: I don't like.
Why?
Cause I'm too poor to have real art work hanging on my walls and gorgeous wooden floor boards from Utah.
I am sooooo envious of your banquette! I want one!
One of my favorite spaces this year. I love the lighting, the floors, the dining area and the bedroom. Not sure about the bedroom and living room furniture.
I love this one. If you don't win I will be sad! It's one of my very favorites of all.
I like many details here. But I wouldn't want to take my meals on a all white banquette day in and day out. I'd have coffee stains, spagetti splashes, salad oil stains permanently embedded in no time. But there are many beautiful things here and a very nice feel.
