What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? The amount of space and the layout, but mostly...our budget! hand-me-down furniture and garage sale finds were key resources.

White Enamel Flatwa...
love this space! i'm a sucker for a pop of color!
I love that bench.
Cute space. I love the kitchen. :)
very cute all around. like a commenter above said, it looks REAL - lived in yet clean and organized. gorgeous bedroom. the arch adds so much interesting depth.
Pretty colors...
did anyone else have trouble giving this a thumbs up? the site told me that it was thumbs up was closed :(
i like this space. it's vibrant and warm :)
Lovely place, very LA. Well done. Sidebar: Holy jeebus, if I read one more comment praising the 'REALNESS' of a space I'm going to loose it. Real is different for different folks. Real for me, lived in for me, is minimal and methodical. Some people don't feel the need to cover every vertical and horizontal flat surface. Don't type 'real', when what you really mean is 'hey, that's exactly where i put my crap'.
Very nice, I gave this a thumbs up, but this was JUST a house tour several weeks ago...
Lovely place! one of my favorites. It clearly does not have the money invested in it that some do yet I like it (almost?) as much. It really goes to show that while expensive items can make a space and space can be beautiful w/o them too.
It strikes me that color really gives a place a put together feeling. Not that an apartment with white walls can't look put together but I think its much harder.
that said, the colors chosen make a difference too. I like the choices her especailly the bedroom. and I like really like the place--not just the colors.
I really like the lamp in the bedroom it goes well with the room, the trim on the bedroom door. the landing strip? in the living room/ the coordinated chairs and walls and the floor cushions.
Not so crazy about the beige near the ceiling and the open storage in this kitchen. but both could grow on me perhaps..
curious about the kitchen too I think one has to go through the bedroom to get to it? that is odd. I could live with that if i had a patio with room for a table though... especially if i lived in a warm climate.
Agreed jacksonlalonde.
I do like this place a lot, but I think the living room could do with one less layer of color on the walls. That third sponge painted border seems to make the ceiling appear lower than it probably is. Other than that, I think it's adorable and everything is 'exactly where I'd put my crap'.
Am I seeing correctly? Are the dogs tucked into their beds? That is so cute.
Every item in this space is well-considered and harmonious. The longer I look, the more I appreciate it.
One of my favorite kitchens yet.
'hey, that's exactly where i put my crap'...
No, not really... i'm much messier.
By the way, has anyone noticed how mid century modernist is Dexter's apartment on the show... That set looks so much like so many house tours here that I almost wonder how many mid century modernist fans carry a "Dark Passenger" in them...
I've seen this before...I remember because I felt sorry for the dogs squeezed under that bench.
oh yeah, and under that credenza too. :>(
house of people, even with color and life, this strange plant, and my English translator google , the end...\0/
anti-i have thought about that many times! i was actually apalled that season four offered no outlet for dexter's obvious penchant for mid century modern design in his new place with the fam. no wonder he kept his apartment! well, i guess that and to have a place for his slides...
i love the colors in this space! and the kitchen! it's probably the most charming kitchen i've seen so far. thumbs up!
I loooove that bench at the end of you bed. Very envious of it actually!
Love this, and I covet that bench in the bedroom. Not crazy about the triple paint job in the living room, but that blue is fabulous. And for people who feel sorry about the dogs under the bench and credenza, some dogs like low, claustrophobic places. One of mine is always under the bed or wedged between the couch and the wall. I'm sure if they didn't like it, they wouldn't stay there.
Ah, I loved this place when it was first shown here. Lots of life and very vibrant. (Too vibrant for me to actually live there, but it obviously suits the homeowners.) And I LOVE that barrel ceiling.
And doggies (small ones, anyway, I guess) like little confined spaces. My dog also wedges himself between the couch and the wall regularly. Why? Dunno.
LOVE all this color!
I love the bedroom, I love the turquoise, I love how much life they've squeezed out of that teeny kitchen. I do not like the three tiers of color on the living room walls. I guess it's supposed to draw your eyes up, make a small room seem bigger. Maybe I just don't like that combination of color.
Oh - and I love the dog beds tucked under the furniture. So sweet to see them peeking out. Dogs love those kinds of small, comfy spaces -- it's a "den" thing, and they feel safe when they are in a confined space where "predators" only have access to them from one direction.
Love this space.
And if the dogs are truly uncomfortable, they'll show you by sleeping somewhere else!
i like this...the bedroom...pops of turquiose...really nice
but yeah, the ceiling looks a lot lower because of the colour layer on the wall...don't quite like the third layer..
awesome place. as others have said, it really feels like a home. this one is going to be tough to beat...
Great use of space, color, and budget. One of my favorites! What are the paint colors in the living room and kitchen?
Definitely a favourite of mine!
Too cute. Love the bedroom!
Anti, Dexter's Season 4 house is 1 block from where I live in Long Beach, CA.

Maybe. Maybe not. The reality is, we all have "stuff." You can hide it away for a photo shoot ("You have three kids under the age of five! Where are all the toys????"), or you can show us how your really live. Kristen has dog beds in her living room, and fruit and paper towels in her kitchen, and tennis balls in her entryway. These items are obviously part of her everyday life. You can call them crap or you can call them necessities, but the bottom line is, she's found a way to live them. We all struggle with form and function. You want your home to be beautiful, but you also want to "live" in it. And if that means storing all of your necessities behind closed doors (and you're fortunate enough to have an abundance of doors to close), then that's "real" for you. For other people, the storage options aren't as obvious. It's easy to make a home look great for a contest: just throw all of your crap outside while you're taking the photos. The real challenge is having a great looking home that's functional as well. In the context of this particular home, I think that "real" means, "You have crap, just like me, but you've found a stylish way of dealing with it. Good for you."
I was smiling as I was typing crap, sometimes sarcasm doesn't translate well from analog to digital. I don't have kids, yet, but I have friends that do... and I was remiss not to consider that. I suppose it's easier to be methodical and minimal when all I have is a slobbering beast to contend with : )
Very pretty-love the colors-I am a color fen, but shy away from painting cause we live in a NYC apartment.
@jacksonlalonde: Don't worry, I was smiling as I was reading "crap." :)
Organized, clean, beautiful colors...gets my vote!
Loved your place ever since HT, definitely rooting for you in this category!!
Bright colors everywhere! Love this, fantastic job.
Nice place... Overall I love the bedroom... The green is awesome ~... especially with the wood bench below the bottom of the bed~
LOVE
I love this house! I only wish I could see a more panoramic view of the kitchen. I would also like to see the bathroom.
I agree with the others that three colors on the living room walls is a bit much. But this home is so wonderful, that hardly matters.
Love the hanging fruit basket and it was giving me ideas until I realised how it would remind me daily how empty it was!
@midwestdiva, here is the link to their house tour last month. I think you'd love this one. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/house-tours/sara-and-michaels-bohemian-rhapsody-house-tour-110930
like it but would like it better with more subdued colors - the kitchen makes me claustrophobic.
omg -- the kitchen makes me smile. the color use is brilliant.
such a tiny space, and i thought my kitchen was small.
This place is great! As for the dog beds: Dogs are actually "cave" animals and like to have small places to sleep...unless they can maneuver their way into your bed in order to sleep with their pack leaders.
And I love your kitchen.
Love this space- the color and how you organized everything. Where did you get that little wooden storage box that is hanging on your kitchen wall that has the scissor in it? We have very similar wooden boxes but they are open that we got from a craft store. But, what you have are perfect!
And, for the record, I agree and love creative license's explanation on the use of "real."
OK, this is freaking me out. This is my old apartment. I lived there for 8 years, from about 1995 to 2003. I swear. Is it on the corner of Lucile and Griffith Park? This is freaking me out and making me miss LA. I loved that place.
love the painting on the wall!
is that lamp from west elm? what is it called...I have to get one?
