Who Lives Here: Shelbey Location: Chicago, Illinois Size: 450 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? My favorite element would have to be my cream-colored dresser--currently in use as a TV stand/bookcase/art catch-all. When I found it, the poor thing was shellacked in a thick coating of yellowish-green stain, giving it a waxy, plasticky look. Add in the bulky, rusted hardware and this thing was in bad shape. I stripped, sanded and refinished it, finally found appropriate hardware, and it's since become my absolute favorite thing--and the item I'm most proud of--in my home.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? My biggest challenge has been avoiding ending up on an episode of 'Hoarders'. I see vintage, I see antique; I buy. I'm slowly amassing, in my tiny 450 square ft. studio, enough chairs and couches to seat all the Queen's hand maidens. This is assuming they're allowed to sit at all.
When I bought my new (used) couch, I could have found a new home for the 1940's settee that had once been in its place. Instead, I boldly eliminated my closet space, moved the settee, and turned the former closet area into a quaint resting space near the bathroom.
There are just so many wonderful antique shops near by, resistance is futile. I have to sternly remind myself weekly that, no, I do not need to add a fifth chair or a third couch to my itty bitty abode.

Yes!
Cohesive, warm and beautifully LIT!
Ultra-feminine without being tweeny and the couch really balances it out. Nice lines, a little structured.
Nice nice nice.
I love it! It's cozy, charming and ladylike without being overly prim or frilly. Beautiful use of space and furniture!
Lovely, charming place. It is eclectic and serene. I understand the struggle of living in a small place and fighting the urge to get more stuff. I am afraid to count the number of chairs that I now own (I am storing some at my office at work as visitor seating and others are crammed into a utility closet).
Anyway, I did want to comment on the unique ways that you have used your space. It looks like the bedroom is across from the kitchen area and that you have a reading nook in the closet area near the bathroom. This is great out-of-the-box thinking for studio living.
very charming without being overly sweet. big thumbs up.
trying to place the nabe... west rogers?
This is my favorite space so far. Bright and cozy. Please tell me there is an open unit in your building!!!
It was love at first sight for me... very nice!
ok, so i love what she's done with the place...in terms of decorating it...but a bed in in the kitchen? hmmm...no.
I still gave her a thumbs up (I think it's one of best ones so far), but a big NO to the bed in the kitchen.
im sooo confused by this layout... but the design appeals so much to my inner girl. thumbs up
Gorgeous! Love the colors and the feminine, sophisticated look. Curious though...how do you handle having your kitchen in the same room as your bedroom? Is it decorated the same way as the bed area or did you try to differentiate it somehow. Love your furniture pieces too!
This is absolutely beautiful! I love everything about it, and the cream dresser is exactly what I've been looking for now for months!!!! I'll never find one like it. You did a great job restoring it! This is definitely my favorite small space.
It's very pretty, but I'm not sure I get the reading nook in the tiny space with no window. I would rather read by one of those big windows in the living room, and maybe use that nook as a closet, since I don't see one on the floor plan.
The dresser is really beautiful.
I am very much liking this one! Best yet! Especially the "reading" nook.
I would never have thought of putting the bed in the dining area, but it works.
My favorite so far! Love the pops of yellow and the gray (?) walls. Did you paint them? What color is it?
Love the pop of yellow in an otherwise monochromatic setting. So what if your bed is next to the kitchen...I'd want to wake in natural light, too! Really no different then living in a studio apt. Creative use of space and thinking outside the small box.
Love everything about it, especially all the windows for the natural light. Great job Shelbey.
This is really great. I love the feminine feel - but it's not too sweet (as others have mentioned). And all of the molding! So lucky & so fantastic. What colour paint have you used on the wall? It's a great shade of gray.
As much as I love this (definitely gave it thumbs up) I can't help but look at the floor plan and play around with the placement of things. For example the storage/shelves in the read area, the bed in storage/shelves area, the settee near the bathroom used almost as banquet seating in the sleep area - with a small table...and then you could another chair or two! ;) for small dinner parties...just a thought. But your way works and is fabulous! Kudos.
This space is gorgeous. I love that you didn't limit yourself to conventional layout ideas when deciding where to put things (like a reading area & bed). I think in a small space, creativity is key.
Regarding the bed in the kitchen: One of my fondest memories was staying at a friend of a friend's tiny appartment in Finland where the bed was in a loft in the kitchen.
I hope you make it to the finals.
A bed in the dining area? You get a thumbs up for creatively and fearlessly employing something I have avoided my entire life as a renter!
Probably my favorite so far. Serovingeyes and fallentree are dead on correct. Feminine without being girly. Putting the bed on the other side of the kitchen is brilliant. It's divided by the door, so I see no issue whatsoever with that. It helps that the apartment has a lot of character. Too bad I can't meet a girl that has a cool apartment like this in NYC. Shoot, I'd even move in...
Thanks for posting the good photos so we could appreciate the space.
i really love the interview on this one. hilarious! love this great space.
The bedroom area is sublime. The gray is so lovely--what color is it?
But if you're using your closet for an extra seating area, where do you put your clothes?
Not my style, but certainly subtle feminine eclectic done well. Great that you followed through with the original vintage pieces. I probably would have tried to make the tiny bedroom work though for the sake of having a defined area for dining/entertaining in the kitchen.
century, would love to hear your thoughts on my entry. Jason and Jeff's, in the International division. (Avoiding the forbidden links!)
I love this! And I actually really like the bed/kitchen area... though, gotta admit, I'd be tempted to crawl back in with my bowl of cereal every morning ;)
I love the colors. Where did you get that big gorgeous rug?
Love!
The moulding is great too, is that original to the space or did you put that in?
Stunningly beautiful. I love the dresser. Such a great idea for your TV and for storage. Your colors are soft and gentle. Overall extremely pleasing.
Really charming sweet place. Like a little treehouse. Nicely done!
I agree. Its very cute, and lovely, but I wanna see a picture of the kitchen. Are there doors in your studio? Are you able to fix a bed near to the bathroom? I am not sure would have done what you did in terms of where your rooms are...but I love how it turned out!
holy smokes, LOOOOOVE.
i wish i could see more pics to get a better idea of this interesting layout. but what i think my favorite thing is how it makes me feel like i am home even though its not my home and i dont know shelbey! so much warmth.
I want more pictures too! I'm loving the whole thing. I wish I could rent it for a week and sleep in that cosy pink bed! I hope that's not too creepy :) I'm just way impressed at what a wonderful homey feeling you have created in such a small place. Very creative!
VERY cute. As for your biggest challenge answer, you are preaching to the choir! Sadly, none of my friends struggle with this and therefore roll their eyes every time I bring home another unique, antique chair (four antique ice-cream chairs are sitting on my back porch), piece of wall art, or lamp. A couple years ago I finally started editing though, and it shows. Looks like you have gotten a handle on it too!
Also, I love the colors in your bedroom. What paint colors did you use?
oh my god, the windows! The view! Love at first sight.
The colors in your bedroom are wonderful, they work so well together! Any information on the paint, please?
I also love your little reading nook... very cozy & private.
Did you curtain off your sleeping area from the kitchen? (I'm envisioning it with a white curtain and I love that image...)
i enjoyed this place. to me, Grandma Chic. but i love the fact the TV is not the focal point and oversized. just sort of blends in with it's surroundings.
love the chandalier in the bedroom...perfect there. and the metal chair in the living room. it's sort of the one piece that doesn't fit, but belongs there.
thanks for sharing!
Wow, this is so pretty! I love it. I am such a fan of the neutral colors and antique furnishings. I also like that the TV is not the only focal point of your living room. Everything looks so sophisticated and put together, and it is absolutely charming. The windows and moulding certainly help with the effect. I would have you style my place in a heartbeat. This is very much what I aspire to. Great job!
this is absolutely beautiful and you deserve to win because i know how much hard work and pride you put into your awesome apartment.
:)
If this apartment were a sweater, I would never wear it on Christmas. Get it? Ha...get it?
Seriously though, great pad. Couch looks perfect for sitting at home all day and making fun of Carrie B-Shaw's ridonkulous antics on the tele.
oh my goodness! THANK YOU so much for all the wonderful comments! i'm literally squealing and dancing all over my apartment every time i read a comment. you have NO IDEA how much all of your nice words mean to me! thank you so, so much! and now for answers:
howaboutcookie: i'm in north lincoln park
thebean: there are openings! if you want some info, email me at: shelbey(dot)campbell(at)gmail(dot)com!
lrobgreene: i love having my bedroom in my kitchen--to me, there's no other place to put my bed. i hate the look of a genuine studio with the bed in the middle of the room. this way it's a tad secluded and extremely cozy :)
tara emelye (and anyone else with paint questions): the gray color is 'secret passage' by behr
century: i might be moving to nyc in the summer so maybe you'll find girl with a cool apartment yet!
cassis: the dresser in the front room holds all my clothes--i'm an expert clothes folder :)
asica: the rug is from the family that i used to nanny--they were getting rid of it and i refused to let them take it to the dump so i gave it a new home :)
katkeig: i tried to get pictures of the kitchen, but none of them turned out quite right and there are no doors, only doorways.
waterlily: there is a white curtain! you're good :)
again, thank you all so much! LOVE!! :)
Shelbs-o-licious has the best apartment in town.
Fabulous. Absolutely IN LOVE with the pops of yellow. Been considering bringing more yellow into my livingroon and this may have sold me . . .
very well done
Also, photo credits go to Calvin Hinson! Thank you!!!! :) :)
Where is the coffee table from? I like the hairpin legs.
Shelby, you did an awesome job. I was actually giddy when I looked at your ingenious floor plan. Truly, the bed in the kitchen was a flash of BRILLIANCE. I'm one of those people who doesn't eat in bed (fear of crumbs/bugs), but if you're able to discipline yourself (breakfast in bed would be TOO easy), this really is the best studio layout EVER. I also love how you made your little alcove into another sitting area. I mean, why have more storage when you could have a cute little place to read? (That's so something I would do, sacrifice storage for aesthetics.)
WOW
more pix please!
AT House Tour!
LOVE. I can appreciate a nicely furnished, cleverly arranged MCM/modern place, but they're just not my style. This one is like a book whose pages I want to live in. Pretty, pretty, but not too girly.
WOW! I'm in love. That side table/chair combo is completely to die for.
Again, I can't thank you all enough for the support and comments! So wonderful to hear from you all! Thank you, thank you!
I love the way you've carved out lots of different little nooks, so it feels like your three rooms are more like five. And all your furniture is lovely, you've inspired me to fit more chairs into my studio.
This is fabulous. I can totally see someone snuggling on the couch with hot cocoa during a rainy day! You've done a great job at really communicating your personal style and making your apartment feel so warm and inviting.
lemondrop, I hope you're a Yankee fan :)
this is great! thumbs up in my book!
It would never have occured to me in a million years to put the bed in the kitchen-- I would have jammed it in beside the bathroom-- and I really want to see more of this place.
You did great job on that dresser. It is very happy in its new life!
it was wonderful to meet you and i must say that your apartment is adorable! so classy. [: love love love.
cowtownmodernist: the coffee table is actually handmade. here's the story from the original owner: the wood top is actually from a large antique breakfront that they then cut to an oval shape, screwed on four hairpin legs (easily found on craigslist, ebay, etsy, etc...), and voilà! it's quite the find :)
juliet, thorndale: i may have drawn the storage/shelving area a bit wide, as it would not fit a full sized bed, even though it looks like it might. it does fit a twin sized bed though! i've wanted to try it out for as long as i've lived here but i just can't give up the full sized bed!
also,
century: what other team is there?
waterlily, spotonriver, cassis: the beige-y color in the bedroom is also the beige-y color on the wall with the windows in the living room. not quite sure of the color as i used a friend's leftovers! i'll try to find out for you though!
housebunny: that's not creepy at all! i totally understand--it's like a little nook in there! this is probably why it's impossible for me to get out of bed on sunday mornings when the sun is shining in :)
thanks again for all the thumbs up and great comments--i really, really appreciate it!
Somehow missed this... Very lovely!
This place blows me away!! Can we have a full home tour?? Pretty pretty please!!
Ditto HeyNowTex! Home Tour, Home Tour, Home Tour!
Very pretty apartment. I love all the mouldings and I miss my last apartment, which had some of the same.
One of my biggest pet peeves is that I have an open floor plan and my bedroom is only 18 feet to my bed and I hate cooking smells. I am nauseous just thinking about sleeping in my kitchen, but I suppose if you have to, this is the way to do it.
Love this home.
The kitchen in the bedroom (very clever use of space, by the way) reminded me of The Office episode when Michael explains that he sleeps with the Foreman Grill next to his bed so that he can wake up to the smell of bacon in the morning. And then he burns his foot.
I'm still a bit on the fence about the bedroom/kitchen combo. Does the color scheme of the kitchen match that of the bedroom area? would love to see pics of the kitchen somewhere.
It should be noted (and should have been noted earlier) nycwife, sucrek and ashasekh (and anyone else with bedroom/kitchen comments) that I DO NOT cook.
My cooking gas has never--and will never be--turned on in the three years that I've lived here. The only food smells in the morning are that of fresh brewed coffee, which is a pretty fantastic smell to wake up to :)
Ashasekh, the kitchen did not photograph well at all, or else I would have loved to get some kitchen shots in there! the walls in the kitchen are the gray in the bedroom with the tan/beige-y color on the cabinets. It's pretty cohesive :)
Light, airy, and very pretty. The carpet is lovely and makes the space look cozy. My favorite.
this is one of my all time favorites :) It is so warm and cozy. I can imagine that it's such a little haven to come home to at night.
Where is that delicate chandelier above your bed from? It is lovely.
And - do you happen to have any additional info on the rug? Does it have a tag you could glance at, etc?
Thank you and really awesome job on this. It is truly fantastic.
Kab -- The chandelier is from a thrift store. It was quite rusted and kind of falling apart but for only $1, I couldn't pass it up! There's so much that Krazy Glue, sandpaper and white spray paint can do :) And, I looked all over the bottom of the rug, but there are no tags of any kind :( I'm sorry!
Thank you for checking - I really appreciate it. I can't tell you how much I love your place. Looking at it just makes me happy. It is soooooooooooo delightfully cozy.
what is the name of that blue color?
megan5r: the blue you're referring to is actually gray, but yes it does have a bluish tint to it. it's called "secret passage" by valspar. i previously said behr, but when i was at home depot last night, i realized, nope, secret passage isn't here. so i'm guessing valspar...
I am confused - you mention a beige color and a gray color. It all looks the same to me. Am I wrong?
Kab: There is a beige color on the wall with the windows in the living area and also on the window wall in the bedroom. The color change is pretty subtle and everything kind of blends together. You don't really notice until you're in the apartment. Hope this clarified!
COol - thanks!
Couch pattern table = too cool for words!
Absolutely love it! I DEFINITELY plan on using this as inspiration for the studio I'm moving into! Luckily, the layout of my apartment is literally exactly the same as this one, which will surely help a LOT.
