Who Lives Here: Terri & Evan Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada Size:740 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Our kitchen has to be the best part of our home - for such a small house, it's a pretty big room! Its one of the few rooms that we had to do a lot of work on, and we're very proud of how efficient and 'us' it is. It also feels like the never-ending reno (we still haven't put up our tile backsplash), but a comfortable kitchen is worth every ounce of time and money we can afford to put into it, so we'll keep plugging away until it's finished.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? We're on a quest to find the perfect layout for our furniture, and side tables/chairs/beds are constantly moving around in an effort to squeeze some more floor space out of our rooms. We seem to feel like we're constantly at capacity, and a piano has recently been added to the mix, just to make our lives a little more exciting. But the more we play with what we already have, the better our space gets.
Our best resource has been the internet, which we're currently scouring for closet ideas. Following the challenge of having lots of furniture and very little floor space comes our bedroom without a closet. We're still working on that one... and we hope to have solved it by the end of summer.

LOVE your couch! What a beautiful color! Great eclectic furniture and art as well.
Loving the grey in the living room, what shade is that?
love the kitchen!!
I love the colours!
Beautiful. Too bad you can't access the bathroom from the bedroom! But hey, what can you do. The decor is lovely.
Second Irobgreene. I am drooling over your living room side tables & coffee table
Just my two cents, but based on the diagram you uploaded could you make your office dual? Office/closet.
You move the desk that backs up to the bedroom wall under the porch facing window. The smaller desk or chair, on the shared living room wall, you switch with the larger of the two pieces in your bedroom and center on the wall facing the door. Then the space where the desk currently is you could create your closet. Using the whole space behind the door and going all the way to the ceiling. You could put a shelf or two at the very top (reachable by a small stool or cool old library ladder). This space could house extra anything from blankets to out of season clothes, etc. In the closet space itself you could have a set of double poles for short items like shirts, skirts, etc, then a single pole for dresses/suits. Possibly even add a set of drawers in the center or end for extra whatever. On the bottom you could even put a low shelf (full length of the closet) so this would give you two rows for shoes. Cover with curtains that flow with the awesome color scheme in your living and tada you are done. By using curtains you solve the issue of the living room & closet doors bumping, plus you save yourself money. Maybe even take down the office door to make the room feel larger.
I have a question is that wallpaper on your living room wall or did you paint it? It is wonderful.
Thanks for sharing.
i like this but i don't know why, if that makes any sense. i think it just feels very homey and cozy. just curious if the range hood is purely decorative or is it fully functioning? it doesn't go all the way to the top of the ceiling. thanks!
I am wondering about your kitchen shelves. Did you purchase them or make them? I am wanting to hang similar floating shelves in my kitchen, but worry about the stability of those on the market. Yours seem to be very sturdy and are able to hold a ton of weight though....just what I need.
very pleasant vibe. easy-going and just a nice warm tasteful home. have a thumbs up. :)
I like this one because it gets its coolness from your awesome mish-mash of belongings and isn't too "designy"! I would feel really comfortable living here. Great job.
Wow! So many great comments - thanks guys!
tenthmile - The lighter gray in our living room is Coventry Gray, and the darker is Iron Mountain (I think), both by Benjamin Moore.
thesmilequeen - Man, do I ever appreciate how much thought you put into that post. I (Terri) actually work from home as an artist, and the office houses our computer, my drawing desk, easel, canvasses, and all the electronics for our tv in the living room. Its a very compact and efficient space! And I like having the door there to keep our three cats out away from my work area when I'm not around. Our plan for the closet is to remove the larger pieces of furniture in our bedroom (which are a wardrobe and shelving unit), and replace them with built-in shelving, and a lovely curtain (which is less expensive and cumbersome, as you said). We're more struggling with what kind of shelving to use - right now we're leaning towards something suspended from the ceiling, since we can find the beams in our attic, but not the studs in our old plaster walls. :)
The pattern on our wall was painted by hand - next time, I would use decals, or stencil it.
hiwelder - The range hood is functional! We vented it out through that exterior wall, which was a super cool diy project. We chose not to extend the cover all the way up to ceiling, because the ceiling is slanted.
amarie - We had our shelves made by a local craftsman, and they do take a lot of weight. I think that's because the inner supports were drilled into a number of studs, as well as being anchored between studs for good measure. The great thing about having them made locally was a)better quality, b)supporting local people!, and c)we drilled the holes into the support ourselves once we determined where the studs were.
I remember this wonderful space (last year's small, cool? color contest?). Love it--good luck!
306 represent!
I heart your kitchen...
I love your use of color in the living room & your art, especially the piece in the bedroom!
I'm not being mean or nit-picky, I just don't feel like I'm getting a sense of the space as a whole and it's like I'm missing out on the personality of your home. Hope I'm explaining myself clearly.
Maybe this is the wrong place to vent but these "creative" photo angles are driving me a bit batty (in a number of these entries, not just this one). I feel like I'm getting an edited version of a room. I like what I see but why is it at the level of an 8 year-old and picture #4 is just a bed, trunk and photo on the windowsill.
Great use of color, especially in the living room. I love the kitchen too, especially the shelves. I will re-echo that this feels homey, and not design-y -- definitely a plus. Thumbs up.
Is that your television right behind the front door? I hope it doesn't get knocked down!
Sarrazak, I hear what you're saying, and I know people have made the same comment about lots of entries, but here's the thing: I don't have a fish eye lens, so that's literally all I could cram into a photo of our bedroom. Infact, I stood outside the bedroom door to get even that much of the room. The only other thing in the room is a very simple wardrobe and shelf to the right, and that's all there is, so I chose the photo of the bed and chest, rather than the bedroom door and wardrobe.
I wasn't able to get all of a room without two or three photos for each, so I guess this was the best I could do with only five slots to show off our home.
I find it refreshing that you can still buy a 748 sq foot house. I live in Ottawa and most of the post WWII, less than 1000 sq feet bungalows have been torn down.
There has been an AT post about your kitchen, right? I remember the previous owners didn't make good use of the space at all, and you guys did such a great job! :)
You have an amazing art collection, and beautiful color scheme. Although, I think the painting to the left of the sofa looks a little disjointed there. Or perhaps, I don't care for it with the wall paper. Not sure. I think I'd rather see it turned horizontally and hung ove the sofa, especially since you speak of perfect placement.
Also, I am bothered by the TV behind the door. Aren't you afraid of hitting the TV when you open the door?
P.S. Just took a second look. I wasn't going to give you thumb's up because of the TV, but had to change my mind because of that gorgeous kitchen.
Thanks for the second look, Peggy. :) In response to your concern for our tv, there is a door stop to prevent the door from smashing into our television. We definitely thought that living room through, before we even purchased the house, and figuring out where to put that tv was tricky. We're really happy with it there, though, especially since we were able to put the components on high shelves in the next room.
Slackerjo, there aren't many post-war <1000 sq foot houses here either - ours was built in 1915!
Oops, I meant to say that most post-war houses here aren't smaller than 1000 square feet either - but that ours was built in 1915, and we are pretty plentiful.
At first I wasn't impressed, but then I clicked on the kitchen and bedroom pictures and WOW! Lovely, tranquil, peaceful rooms! Thumbs up for those rooms!
I heart your couch! You totally make the blue on the couch pop and have serious couch envy now.
I think the TV looks very awkward by the front door, though i understand if there was literally no other place it could go.
What a lovely use of space, and a lovely home. You've managed to prove why Saskatoon is the jewel of the SK prairies! ;)
p.s. my grandmother in Regina had the same cedar chest!
Fantastic! So colorful, yet so cozy and relaxing. Love!
I love your couch, too!
I looooove your couch! May I come steal it? :) Everything in your place looks great!
Love the trunk in the bedroom!
Love it, I have been looking for a small house in S'toon for my bf and I. Your house is so charming, what area of the city are you in?
Currently living in the not so great part of the alphabets :(
