What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? The steel beam that holds up my loft. I built my apartment including all the cabinets and some of the furnishings within.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? I am an avid picker so I had most of my furnishings prior to building my apartment. What I didnt have I made to fit my space.

Nomade Express Slee...
I love this. What neighborhood are you in?
That is impressive. Nice work.
Very nice!!!!!!!!! I would really like to know where that white buffet/curio cabinet is from. Please!
I LOVE the shelving up in the loft area. And the yellow adds just enough color. The furnitire is perfect - love the simple style. Really fantastic work - this is definitely a favorite! Jealous ... where do you find that kind of raw space in Chicago?
Are those airport chairs?
I was curious about the white cabinet, great find.
"Are those airport chairs?"
Yes those are Eames tandem sling seating designed for Chicago's O'Hare in the early 1960's
Very nice place.
Is the yellow beam an exposed steel beam or were you able mimic that somehow? I have an area in my place where something similar would look great but don't know how to recreate the look.
Man I love hand-drawn floor plans. Thumbs up.
I like this! I'm usually a huge fan of the all-white-leaning-toward-sterile-kitchen, but yours is really nice and warm.
I wonder if there was a change in the contest instructions this year. We seem to be getting a lot of entries that only focus on one room to the exclusion of others. I'd like to see the rest of this home.
Love the kitchen! I could live here.
oh, and the record shelves!
I love the lofted area that holds the records, but the music fan in me wants to know -- how easily accessible are they if you want to play them?
Love it! But I agree, we need to see more. Maybe there's a house tour in your future? I'd like to see where you sleep. It looks like maybe a loft? I can't tell from the diagram. Anyway, you're a very talented guy. Kudos!
thumbs up!
Love your bar stools. Are they vintage and/or can you share any info?
I like that you put yourself in one of the pictures. I thought about this, to give a better sense of scale.
I have to be honest and don't like the receptionist chairs, they are just a little too industrial/modern and don't seem to take visitor's comfort into account. This might not be the case, they might be super comfortable, but they don't lend themselves to a comfortable sit down and chit-chat.
However, pretty much everything else is spot on. The display case next to the bathroom is tres chic, and the yellow beam and art work just the little something to make it a personal inviting space. This is particularly true of the kitchen. Good job!
Thanks everyone for your comments! I live on the south side of Chicago, around Western and 50th near northern Gage Park. The curio cabinet is a Salvation Army find here in Chicago. The steel beam is real and working! The black chairs are airport chairs that I have had for about 18 years and LoriSF was correct, they are Eames chairs from Chicago O'Hare. I use a 2 foot ladder to reach my albums and my record player is stored in the Curio cabinet. My loft only has 4-1/2 feet of head space, so I sleep and sit at my desk in the upstairs space.
Psychedelic painting...Love it. Great apartment.
I am not at all a fan of yellow/orange shades but your place makes me question my taste! Great colour combination, clean lines - the result is one of my favourites in the contest. And you seem to fit perfectly in it. Thumbs up!
You take some good pictures! Not only is your space well decorated- though very different than what I normally go for, but the angles you use in taking the pictures add depth (this is missing in many of the the other small cool submissions)!
tied for my top vote right now but number one in the tiny class!
i love the handmade aspect of it and it's so well done. clean and simple while still being sophisticated and inspiring. the i-beam in yellow is a perfect accent. the mix of shelves in the kitchen is both attractive and functional.
making small spaces look large and giving the illusion of extra room is no mean feat. well done!
Two more questions. Did you paint your floor? If so, what did you use? And, which yellow did you use on your door and loft? These are some really nice details. (Actually, that was three questions, wasn't it.)
The chairs look unwelcoming, I would rather sit on the floor in a clear and empty space than on those 'cool' chairs. However I do very much like that I see a person in the photo(Not in that lady in the bathroom off putting kind of way in some other entry). It helps me to see the life inside the space. I like this, but upon arrival I would just stay around the kitchen area, which seems more welcoming.
Really interesting apartment and totally unique. Great job! Thumbs up from me.
Place looks great! I like the small but well picked collection of dunnys. You seem to have an addiction to vinyl.
Very nice, my tastes have always been more rustic than this, but then again, I live in the sticks!
I love this! Want him to update my home....
Wow! Great home. You put a lot of love into this space. FYI: The Eames Tandem Sling chairs are very comfortable, I have spent countless hours sleeping on them in airports!!! Good luck in the contest.
What's upstairs?
Yes I agree with above- I too am voting reluctant as I need/want to see the whole space! Show it off in a house tour!
Is that a plywood countertop? Did you build it? Also, did you do the cabinet doors?
Very interesting space. I love the look of the bank of airport chairs. It's a great idea for extra seating in a small space, but I think I'd miss having something softer to sit on if this was the only seating.
Show us more of the space!
Todd,
I live in a similar space in NYC and like the way you did your place!
Was wondering if we can we see the upstairs?
Also could you tell us where you got the bar stools?
