What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? Our wall organizing unit -- which is home to our desk, extra closet space, and storage. It's the central hub of our home and small business. Without this unit, things would probably be a bit more chaotic.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? Hands down: choosing the right furniture. When we moved into our apartment we knew we would have to be strategic about how to make it all fit. Like I said previously, our wall organizing unit was a great storage solution and was also fairly narrow, which gave us more walking room. Our mini-couch doubles as a fold out bed and because I am a designer, choosing the perfect size desk allows me enough room to contain my materials and inspiration. The internet was our main source of inspiration for small space solutions -- it was about finding things that worked for other people and then seeing how we could translate that into our space.

Fantastic storage unit! The white drawers look great in your place.
What kind of storage unit is that?
TINY! For two peeps and a doggie?! Damn, girl!
bove,
if im not mistaken, i believe it's from ikea. it's the stolmen collection.
Very nice! I don't think I could ever live with that little space, but it looks lovely. I don't even mind the hanging clothes (which usually bother me).
Is the floorplan image working for other people? If it's broken, can we get it fixed? The layout seems fairly obvious, but I'd like to know about closet/kitchen/bathroom placement.
This studio is adorable. I've been following Whitney on Darling Dexter for quite some time and she always inspires me :)
Amazing. This layout looks very similar with the winner of tiny-teeny devision from last year. I like it how you place the bed further in. Good work!
That is awesome! One of the best uses of space I've ever seen!
bright, clean, pleasant, well organized for a tiny space ... but really. do they work for ikea or something? i think it lacks personality. more a sterile, generic office than a home. am i missing something?
LOVE the kitchen. Also, another great example of how white walls can look great. good job.
the place is decorated nicely, but the layout could truly use some work. I would have tried a divider beween the bed area and the living area and oriented the couch to face away from the clutter of the closet system (unless you watch TV on your computer) .... if I did not want to put a divider there, I probably would have rotated the bed to face the wall so the headboard itself created a divider. And since the ceilings seem nice and tall, I probably would have utilized shelving a bit closer to the ceiling (especially over the hanging clothes and the desk).
And I would have tried to find a solution to the clothes that did not involve them hanging out in the open like this. I might have just considered building a wardrobe with doors (frosted glass) and laid it directly on top of the white cabinets assuming they could support the weight... or maybe would have put some sort of curtain in front of the hanging clothes.
anyway, it seems like you've utilized open space pretty well for 2 people and have managed to fit all your stuff into 300 sqft, plus the kitchen is nice. I don't mind the sterile look... people don't always realize that's really what you need to give the space an open and airy look (as someone who lived in a 400 sqft studio for some time). best of luck!
I give you props for this space. Everything looks functional without having too much clutter. Love the wall organizer and exposed brick.
love the quilt and love the storage boxes used as an end table. bravo on the use of so much IKEA without it looking like a showroom!
This is nice, just one worry: is that curtain too close to the stove? I'd worry it would go up in flames. Maybe that's just me. :)
I respectfully disagree with Scoot's suggestions, a divider in a 300sqfoot space would get in the way and never be used, even if it folded out. Having the clothes out in the open forces you to keep them presentable, uses less space, and looks good, clothes have nice pattern and colours so why not hang them...remember this is the small is cool contest....storing everything to the point of laboriousness is not what its about, its about livability.
they have done a really wonderful job... i would love to know more... what does the husband do... what is the weeks schedule/routines.... the details of how you make the space work!
I agree, with a small space and only 2 windows any screen, etc. would ruin the overall open feel of this space.
Well done but I am also having a problen with the floor plan pic. I need to see the closet, pantry layout... badly. Pretty please.
Two people, a dog and a home-based business?!
Lovely. But where do you eat?
YOU GO WHITNEY! your space is awesome and i love that you are not "above" IKEA. hooray!
is that the SOLSTA sofa-bed from ikea recovered in more attractive fabric? i have that sofa, and was trying to decide if i wanted to attempt such a large-scale sewing project. did you do it yourself?
I love this place. It is so livable and neat and interesting. Great job!
love most of it, but i'm kind of confused by the super minimal sofa-side. i think a side table and lamp would warm it up. and you might think about pillows and some more art? it just seems so spare in comparison to the rest.
and ps. is this whitney of http://www.darlingdexter.com/ fame?
I kind of like this. Its clean and organized which doesn't make the space seem small. I love the blue accents in the kitchen and I think that a bit more color in small doses in the living area wouldn't take away from the space at all. I still love it though!
Seriously, two people and dog! Wow! I am impressed. The space is practical and functional. I think it's just right. Good Job.
Great job. Gives me ideas for my small space.
Very neat and organized, but the bar for this contest is pretty high...
aah i want your puppy!
I could never handle such a small space with another person and animal, but your home is enviable. Really, really well done!
I love how you work with what you have and don't try to cram extra furniture in there. I know that would be beyond me.. I am the queen of impulse buys. You must have restraint and a half!
The side table doubling as storage is a great idea. Nothing here looks forced. Your place looks bigger because you know how to organize and decorate.
Big kudos. This rocks.
I love it. Clean, bright well organized space with pops of color. The quilt is beautiful too.
Love this. You've made it feel much larger than it is and it looks like you have fabulous storage. Great job! Thumbs way up :)
PS. I like the clothes out in the open. I think it breaks up all the white storage and gives that wall a little interest. I'd hate it if it were disorganized and random but this looks neat and visually interesting.
Looks organized, but I wouldn't like staring at this wall unit all the time. And you need a much larger piece of art over your sofa.
very niice <3
I like nearly everything about the way this tiny space is set up - except the wall storage unit. It's too busy looking with all the separate drawer-hanging clothes-box components and it really dominates the space. Even though it's clearly very well organised it looks cluttered in the otherwise very pared down space. I think it would look better with doors (maybe sliding doors to save space) or even curtains. The light curtains with the subtle pattern in the kitchen look great.
Whoa, 2 people and a dog in there is impressive. I imagine you would have to be super tidy otherwise the smallest mess would be multiplied by 1000.
I must admit I dont really like seeing the clothes hanging in the open like that, but otherwise I think you have done a good job with nothing
I like it! I love the pops of blue in the kitchen. And your dog is adorable. Is he a Bichon?
Great job decorating such a tiny space! Looks clean cozy.
I respectfully disagree ... I think that a divider in that area would not take up much space at all. I did even suggest merely rotating the bed to face the window that way the headboard of this malm bed would be a divider in and of itself. Sure you can't put a huge expedit bookcase (those things are like 18 inches deep ... too big for a 300 sqft space) but there are plenty of great screens that are just a few millimeters thin and would really provide some privacy so that whoever is on the couch is not forced to stare at the bed and all those clothes out in the open. a screen in a bamboo or wood to match the floor with a cool curve would look very pleasant even if it only extended from the wall to the bed and still allowed access to the space between the bed and the wardrobe.
Beautiful space! I have no idea how you managed it!
thumbs up just for that bichon!!
Having clothing on view is very Euro. I don't have a problem with it, as I like function over form. It also adds color to a space that lends itself to a white backdrop. To me, it's kinda special.
It is a little too spare color-wise for my taste, but I applaud the open storage. That is very hard to pull off and it is amazing that you have two people living there and have still made room for your work. The apartment manages to feel light and airy even with the small amount of space and must be a nice place to come home to.
I love that yellow leaves porter. Where did you get it?
oops, I meant poster, and now that I look at it again, I don't even know if those are actually leaves :P
Great space! I used that storage system in a small studio and agree that it is one of the best systems for the price. It fit so much and really helped to keep things organized. Good luck!
I think the problem with putting up a divider between the couch and the bed is that all the windows are on wall where the bed is, so putting a divider expressly so you wouldn't have to look at the bed means you won't get any natural light while sitting on the sofa, either. Rotating the bed could still be an option I guess, but you might not want to wake up with the sun in your eyes (if the windows face approximately south....)
It does have a very IKEA-heavy feel, but I'm impressed that Whitney manages a dog, a husband, and a business in 300sf without going crazy. I'd like to see the clothes enclosed, maybe behind doors covered with some happy or soothing fabric, but three beings, two desks, and all their other stuff in 300sf without looking cramped deserves a thumbs-up...especially since my 1300sf doesn't look this neat.
I am a bit confused at what excites people about this apartment.
I think they do a great job of organizing their space. I also respect the sparseness of it to keep it looking tidy. I like the touches of yellow that bring the space together to.
That said, while it looks functional it doesn't look that comfortable-- or particularly beautiful. We have seen equally small done more creatively on apartment therapy.
I understand the excitement over small spaces that are well used, and I think the size of the space needs to be taken into account when deciding on its merits.
But, I have to wonder if people just get excited at the fact that they are able to live functionally in such a small space.
I am pretty impressed by the two people and a dog ( and two sewing machines) in 300 square feet. Almost makes me feel guilty.
I liked it a lot. I think the white made it less oppressive.
However, I would like to see a Little more color.
But it is nice.
Cute apartment! Well considered and fresh. I'd totally live there. It's a sign of a good relationship when a couple can happily inhabit a small space. Cheers!
I love this place.
Cute puppy.
Love the arrangement; skip the screen. Different zones announce themselves simply by being organized, you don't need a "this is another part of the apt." screen. I like that you keep everything bright and white, but the room really could use more color. Pic over the bed is way too small, but that could be fixed by getting one of those 25 x 25 frames from PB for smaller photographs. Can't believe this is the East Village, though. It's functional and attractive.
I wish I got here early enough to thumbs you up, but from one former Savannah resident to another, kudos for going from your beautiful bungalow to teeny tiny!
My one and only criticism (and I apologize in advance if I sound like a snob) is if you are going to use storage boxes as temporary end tables, use a higher quality box. Bigso makes a beautiful large fabric one in this lovely blue/grey color that would go so lovely with the rest of your home.
Or, you could simply get a cute little end table (you still have a lot of space to work with).
big city, simple things, happy family... life is great... you don't need anything more.
I really like the idea that TheoJ had about putting the storage unit on the other wall in order to play up the brick more--that would look great.
Impressive use of space!
Curious as to how the Stolmen is holding up?
I love the quilt! Where did it come from?
