What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? I wanted a large kitchen in a small apartment. Re-orienting the kitchen with the bathroom behind it was a stroke of genius from my designer Pia Richter of The Apartment.

A photo that includes a woman on the toilet... Is that necessary?
Photo four is a little strange. What is going on the bathroom?
same question as JasmineIsDomestic...really...?
I had the same impression. I thought somebody was reviewing these photos before they were posted. What if it as a child instead of an adult? This takes it to new level. Perhaps there should be a review before photos are posted.
I think this is beautiful, but I don't see the advantage of the open bathroom. I dunno, maybe would have preferred those glass doors that frost and unfrost? Interesting how they matched her panties to the room though ha... good attention to detail.
Oh yeah, because of it (4th photo), I didn't give it a thumbs up.
"A photo that includes a woman on the toilet... Is that necessary?"
Srsly!
I was totally going to thumbs up but the woman on the toilet pick just soured the whole thing for me.
Don't like the bathroom shot either - we're not here to look at that - we want to see good design which that totally detracts from.
I actually thought it was kinda cheeky...get it? seriously though...she's wearing shorts. no harm done. the place is GORGEOUS.
Giant fail on the toilet pic AT. A little degrading, no?
I'm wondering about the double entry to the bathroom, too. I think the double doors are so that you can access the bathroom both from the bedroom and front door area, and also from the dining/living room area. But that would mean guests would walk through the shower part to get the the toilet?
Give me a break, you are worried a child might be offended by a photo of a person going potty, taken from afar.
I would have given you a thumbs up, but it's clear you're trying to win a contest for something other than design. Not interested. Good luck.
Hey, woman on toilet did the same trick as Hansel in Zoolander. She got down her underwear while keeping on her shorts. Neat!
I like the photo and the apartment. Nice job. I love the blue chairs.
toilet shot aside, i think the design of the space is so very cold and impersonal. i'm also not a fan of superfluous technology. the ginormous rotating tv/screen is pretentious.
If it wasn't for the annoying 4th photo, I would have given this a huge thumbs up.
"Hey you know what would be awesome? Can you put on some stilettos and thong panties and sit on the toilet pretending to pee? It may look staged but it will be art!"
FAIL on 4th photo. Nice on everything else.
OMG! I have that same woman in my Bathroom! I found mine at HomeGoods, where did you find yours??
Oh, c'mon, it's not the end of the world - she IS clothed. And the toilet lid actually appears to be down. That said, it is a little "what the heck?" for Apartment Therapy.
It's not that I'm offended, I just think there is an appropriate level of familiarity readers should have here with each other and that is too familiar for me.
That bathroom shot was a turnoff for me. Does anyone actually live here? Seems a bit sparse and cold and more like a furniture showroom than a home. Where is the personality?
Everybody Poops.
Uhm... Yea, bathroom photo aside (really??) it is extremely cold looking. Are people actually supposed to sit on those wooden benches to watch tv??
Sounds like a henhouse full of total prudes to me. Brilliant use of space, fantastically executed and beautifully shot. Two thumbs way up.
@GeeBee40 I got mine at CBGB's in the 70's and she just won't leave!!!! LOL!
hunted interesting comparison, LOL.
There are some very cool aspects of this space- staged bed with white drapes, hanging flat screen with hanging drapes as the back drop, bathroom is pretty cool even with lost robe (phil collins) reference.. the chick sitting on the toilet is so Domus magazine ad for shower fixtures at least its not some fat hairy dude.
Based on the appearance of the seating available in the place I believe the woman selected the most comfortable one! I assume the TV swivels to face the bed or the (uncomfortable looking) chairs. Neat idea but stand back when that mammoth sucker rotates!!!
I saw the chick on the toilet and just had to read the comments. Also, wanted to ask if AT is messing with us. It looks like there is a large cartoon duck head on the right.
Picture #1 looks like the apartment has a 150" flatscreen tv!
The toilet shot is inappropriate.
I don't think the toilet shot is horrible.
Just stupid.
Raise your hand if you're in a square state...
Christ you're a conservative lot. Thumbs up.
Great space.
I'm just... very, very confused by this space. Duck head, toilet shot, and all.
Haha I like the toilet shot. Surprising in an amusing kind of way. :) Lighten up, people...!
In general I think the space is really cool. Not "comfy" enough for my taste, but hot damn that spinning TV is cool and I like the curtain for the bedroom platform. Not someplace I would personally be capable of living but I sure as hell would love to visit a place that looked like that!
Just feels pretentious to me. Especially with the posed half naked lady. Yes, we get it... you're edgy, you have style, and you have lots of money. Barf.
Wow. I am stunned by the comments here.
This is a loft in NYC. It's modern and clean. Some people feel more comfortable in houses that feel/look like a museum. I personally can't deal with clutter or nick knacks, so I love this space. I have absolutely no issue at all with picture #4 (when I saw it, I actually chuckled). The TV rotation thing is a great solution for a small space. And, the bathroom has two pocket doors (clearly visible in the infamous pic #4 and on the plan).
If I could thumbs up more than once, I would. I'd love to live here - especially for an apartment in NYC.
Love love love. And personally I love the 'woman on loo' shot! :) As someone fortunate enough to count the owner of this apartment among my dearest friends, I can testify that this space is even more stunning when you're experiencing it for real. A jewel box of an apartment.
I've got some news for you AT. That apartment is not small. Not small by any standards and especially not by New York standards.
Plus a woman with her drawers down on the toilet? I wish there was a 'thumbs down' option.
Is that the AFLAC duck??
And please resubmit the pics with a wet dude in the shower. Then you'll get my thumb. So to speak.
smiled at the terribly offensive horrible rotting my eyes and rending my moral fibre asunder shot. didn't care for the tv. a little cold but still clean and fairly simple.
my favorite part is the bathroom. a little large for my taste but well done.
best of luck in the contest.
You know, I was going to vote for it because of the bedroom curtain situation. Then I saw photo #4. I'm not at all offended, but I do think it is tacky. I also wish there were more comfy chairs. Funny, though, and worth it because of all the comments.
ok, so i didnt like the panties around the ankles pic, but was not offended by it (I think a kid would find it totally funny). i just think it was stupid...
anyhoo...did not like the place anyway, so i didnt have to take it into consideration.
no thumbs up for me. too cold, too sparse.
I read all the comments before looking at the photos (my computer is being slow tonight) and then was shocked to see how very tame the "toilet photo" is. I mean, really. Relax, Morality Squad.
#pearlclutching
The space is good, aside from the first photo, it's really is the space that is impressive, not what's done with it.
I completely agree w/ scarlethue, zoee and Gvinton, it has nothing to do with me being conservative, it's just so staged that it falls flat. This is what you have to stoop to?
GeeBee40, it's comments from people like you that make me scroll down the page :)
I like this place. Not in love with the furnishings, but the rotating TV is brilliant. I would like it better if in addition to rotating it could also be raised and lowered.
There is a difference between issues of morality and issues of taste.
sarrazak--
For me, you totally nailed my own reaction with "it's really is the space that is impressive, not what's done with it."
I would loooooooooooovvvvvvvvvee to furnish/decorate this space.
But I think you meant "This is what you to to poop to?" :)
strange times we live in where the decoration matters more than solar exposure and even the floor map fails to mention "South".
Or is it that money can't really buy taste?
Photo 1: interesting
2: like the bed curtain
3: wouldn't want to watch a movie on that furniture
4: surprising, jarring, OFFENSIVE. You just get the feeling (or hope) that it's some insider reference, but I don't care. I hate it.
And that bathroom could house a family of 4.
Someone said something about liking neat spaces. What's neat about the bathrobe on the floor and that wet looking dark towel in the corner of the shower?
cindygallop--
When you say "experiencing it" do you mean "peeing in it"?
The peeing woman is practicing the beloved AT premise of Keep Calm and Carry On.
Yeah, pic 4 is a bit needy, cos you had me at hello. More than anything else, I am impressed with the way the kitchen is family sized and the bathroom too. Possibly the bed area is a bit hospital room for me, but you can really see that a person with almost algorithmic skills designed this - the storage design for everything makes me think that this is a place you really could live with minimal furnishings and maintain the look captured here.
I thought it was weirdly futuristic up until until I saw the woman on the toilet.. then it felt more realistic. I'm giving it a thumbs up based solely on that.
my mind can't get over the woman on the toilet picture. I have no problem with that part of the picture. Thinks its nicely done actually. But is the duck photoshopped in? What is it floating on? I am perplexed just as the woman's underwear match the tile the duck matches the credenza type thing but what is it? Is it usually there-- or just some sort of joke for the photo?
I had some trouble with the layout because the white rug seems to disappear in one shot.
love the curtained bed, like the blue chairs a lot it is a bit spartan for my tastes but can see some people really getting into it.
Finally, Im tired of people complaining about the size of apartments. 800sq feet is well within the contest rules. This is not is not an exercise in sustainability; rather it's a showcase of the different ways to make spaces under 1000 sq feet work. (Although a sustainable apt. contest would be a really fun contest to have on AT --I'd be really into that.)
oh never mind... just noticed second duck in shower...
and realized first duck is going in oven.
still don't get where the rug went in pic 3 and why I can't see the wooden/chairs? or bench in pic 1. were they moved or is the space larger than it seems and they are just out of the frame?
lol patrick (the other one)
Sweet place! I love the storage wall in the living room and the swivel TV.
The infamous bathroom shot is hilarious.
I am AMAZED at the people piping up with "Your photo is offensive and I would have voted for it but now I will punish you for your objectionable taste."
Really? Really? You're censoring a shelter site?
There goes the neighborhood. AT, if you ever do anything like this again, we'll see you shut down.
Beautiful place. Too high-concept to be comfortable. Wish I could vote for it 50 times to balance those idiots.
Photo 4 reminds me of the mudflap chick, not really my taste. I would have to agree with scarlethue, it turned me off.
The TV sticks out like a sore thumb. But I love the rest; the bits of yellow, blue and green. I love how the wall of closets blends in. The place feels spacious and light. Nicely done.
There's a duck in the sink, a duck in the shower and a chick on the toilet...what does that say about William?
I'm with Patrick, wet dude in shower please!
Are you kidding? Chick on the toilet? Very low class. Cheapens your otherwise glamorous apartment. I'm surprised AT published this.
Plus a woman with her drawers down on the toilet? I wish there was a 'thumbs down' option.
"Drawers"? Seriously? Are you a time traveler from the 1920s? How are you even operating our newfangled "inter-net"?
I would have given you a thumbs up, but it's clear you're trying to win a contest for something other than design.
Unlike all of those people who shove their kitties into shot. The stylised and just slightly trangressive bathroom photo complements the style of the apartment: sleek, art-magazine-y, unrealistic and cool.
Furthermore the big TV isn't "pretentious". It's luxurious, and, heaven forfend, demonstrates a different set of priorities. Personally I love its brazenness.
And if I were William, I'd take the comparison to Patrick Bateman as a compliment.
Man, so much ranting. I need a drink :)
Imagine lying in bed in this apartment... the nauseating. blended stenches of unwashed dinner dishes and bathroom smells. Yuk! Equally nauseating is the bland, predictable, soulless nature of every single aspect, every single piece. I mean, what does it take to walk into a BoConcept room set and say "yep!". Huge fail.
Um, yul just lowered the bar here with, "And by the artwork in the entry i'm sure the owner is gay."
Seriously??
Jesus.
Love the space.
But for your own sakes get a couch!
Photo in question is just trying too hard in my opinion, and i don't mean constipation.
The bathroom shows pocket doors in the floor plan and in photo 4, so it's not actually open as some said earlier.
I'm just glad other people see the ducks.
I was close to pushing thumbs up until I saw that woman on the toilet! That is not cute at all and adds nothing to the interior.
the ultimate semi-bachelor pad?? either way i love the open space.
Great space!!!!!
Lighten up folks! Hey is that Tina Fey from 30-Rock? Hold on wait don't open that door!
those televisions will suck up your energy if not covered and left in the off position, its basic feng shui
Don't like it, and not because of the toilet shot but because your living room looks like a waiting room, because I'm one of the few people who hate giant TVs and because I'm not one for open bathrooms... I didn't particularly mind the fourth picture though, I don't think it's that offensive. And about it looking staged? Other people shove their pets into their pictures, he did the same thing with a woman. So what?
LOL on the toilet shot. I love this space. Big thumbs up.
Is it just me, or does this space seem a lot smaller than 800 sq. ft? Odd.
I love this home. Everything is perfect including the woman on the shitter..cheers!
I don't really like having your bed across from the kitchen. I would have switched the dining space with the "bedroom".
No one seemed to complain about the picture on this article...
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/tips/the-most-important-rental-tip-weve-ever-given-111739
...well, maybe some people did, but for some reason, most people are a lot less offended when it's a guy and not a gal.
Well, at least she isn't sitting there reading a magazine.
Love the comment stream. Who knew there was so much judgement in the world.
To answer a few of the questions:
"gay" painting of man in Tutu is a self portrait by Paul Richard...a straight artist.
Ducks are intentional...all are my own art which manifests multiple representations of a rubber duck...the one in the oven is in fact a 1930's decoy painted. The pixel-ated painting work on the wall is also a duck (well spotted).
These photos were taken when the apartment was first renovated. It was originally 1.5 bedroom and lots of little rooms. The ceilings are 11ft so we knocked it back to a single space...that's why the kitchen is an island in the middle of the space. It has a window above and the two pocket doors at each end of the bathroom to amplify that effect of openness. It's a concept that really works and makes the space feel massive. Which ever space you are using can expand to accommodate as many people as you want. No walls of divisions. It's social. It's designed to be full of people not clutter and furniture.
The photo was taken before my large L shaped sofa arrived and before the large dining table (seats 8-10) so we used the bench and a small coffee table for the photos.
The chairs are original mid century pieces by found at flea markets..(when new york had flea markets).
There are no dishes in the sink because of the silent Miele dish washer which is under the counter.
The curtain acts as a wall between the bedroom and the kitchen. There are two curtains. A sheer as seen in the photo and a heavy light proof and sound reducing divider on the same runners. This can be pulled all the way back or if you don't like the kitchen pulled to create a divide.
The TV does swivel 360 degrees and can be watched from anywhere it the apt. One TV serves bedroom, Kitchen, Living room and dining room. The cable, DVD, music and entertainment systems are in one of the closets and controlled remotely.
Hope that clears things up.
Sorry I added my thumbs up before I studied the pics better. This is a stupid use of space, and I hate it.
Fourth pic got an eyeroll from me initially, but on further assessment and taking the ducks into consideration it's hilarious. The floorplan was a bit difficult for me to parse, though (perhaps you should have indicated where the ducks were on it?) What's the C<->D and B<->A indicate?
Of course 800sqft is within AT's set boundaries for "small", but the place does look enormous, kitchen hardly seems small, blahblahblah. It is impersonal like a showroom, but has some nice features, some of which the guy is clearly responsible for himself anyway.
I'm generous with my thumbs up, and love the minimalist color scheme. But no thumbs up for you, photo four LAME, not clever.
Maybe a future entry will give us some bed action and take AT to a new level! I’m very glad my sound is turned off and that smell-a-vision has not arrived to tech.
No bums, I mean thumbs from me. Not for the reason you’re thinking tho.
Not offended. And at first inspection missed the rubber duck! Lol. This place is awesome! I'd love to be able to do that w/my t.v. anchor it that way to be able to watch anywhere I'd want in my space.
Btw... that controversial photo - it's been done - so no shock to my system... I've 'bout seen it all. Haven't we all?
I am not sure what to say, but having lived with girlfriends in the past, the sight of a women on the toilet is nothing out of the ordinary. When put into context with the space and the premise behind the photos, there certainly is a design element. I get it. Who cares. I actually appreciated it after seeing a series of very underwhelming, "safe" homes in this competition. To each is their own, however I am literally jaw dropped, shocked at the conservative thinking of many people. Anyone remember The Tunnel from the mid 90's? The bathrooms in most of these places were co-ed. I'd be leaking next to a transvestite, with a girl sitting on a chair right next the open urinal. I'll leave it at that...
1050908- I am not sure I entirely understand your comment. If it was a child in the photo or if a child views this. Frankly, if you intended to make a point about a child viewing and being offended, thats just absurd. That's the same mentality that I personally despise in people. First thing that comes to mind is "OH COME ON"
For the poster Yul, that made the assumption that the owner is gay, I don't think that was necessary. I'll judge people on "effort" hence my unlimited "your photos suck comments" but I don't think its appropriate to pass judgement on ones preferences based on a painting. To make an association btw an item = sexual preference, well that's just ignorant.
Back to the original reason for posting. The loft is totally bad ass. Digging the floors, sleeping area and the swivel, hanging flat screen was genius for the space. Thanks for being original.
Everything is amazing! The pic is obiously tung in cheek. Get over it!!!
It takes a confident man to put his bed on a stage. :)
I can't see the art with the tutu. Where is it?
Vast and awesome? Yes.
Small and cool? No.
There's no doubt that this is a fantastic apartment, but it doesn't seem to fall into the "Small, Cool" variety.
Who knew Apartment Therapy's readers were so conservative! Pic 4 is pretty tame I thought, and this place is awesome! Well done!
I'm lmao right now because when I first saw the bathroom photo, I honestly thought, "Oh! I wonder if anyone noticed that? I think there's a girl peeing in the background!" 950 comments later, I guess you all noticed!
Oy, people, move on. It was either a failed attempt at humor, or a successful attempt at creating one of those weird pseudo-edgy European bathroom advertisements. Either way, this is an AMAZING apartment! Kudos.
What is creative about duplicating the model unit in these modern buildings? And why is there even a photo of the shower? What contribution was made other than the duck? I'm assuming the tile is the same in every apt in the building.
Patrick Bateman quote right on.
I wish profiles had pictures associated with them. I would love to see who some of these commenters are.
I love the curtains, the TV and ceiling details. The built-ins are great. Basically the bones of the place. The furniture (minus the yellow sideboard), not so much.
Sixx--
I respectfully disagree. I personally find the layout, and many of the decisions, to be much more interesting than what most modern commercial builders are coming up with.
The only issue I have is that I feel like the kitchen would feel lopsided to work at... with nothing but empty space behind.
But I'd still love to work with, and be in, the space.
William--
Too bad you did not get to show your updated furniture choices with these submission photos.
that photo is offensive not because of morality issues and not because we don't want to be reminded people poop all the time. it's offensive because the woman in it feels like part of the furniture.
since i'd like to think of myself as a woman AND a human being, i.e. not furniture, i'm giving it a thumbs down.
Oh AT commenters are so prudish. The bathroom photo is kinda funny, actually. It illustrates the openness of the space. Who are you all to judge how other people live???
I feel like if I did a Google search I would find this as a model apartment somewhere. I really don't feel like someone lives here. Even the pics seem like stock photography.
the bathroom shot is kinda funny, but it detracted from the beautiful apartment
it seems that the religious right are cruising apt therapy lately....
LOL GeeBee40!
Love the curtain surrounding the "bedroom"
I'd like to see a photo a Nilia, so I could pee on it. Sorry, that was probably the most intelligent thing I could say. I had a whole long written out response to many comments. Not good and I'll be glad I deleted it. SwedishChef, I'm with you brother. You try being 34 in Manhattan and single. Women here will tear you apart. It's not good.
As the 1 in this apartment, I can attest that I often watch reruns of Glee while on the WC with both doors open and a roast in the oven -- but worn robes, never.
wow.. great afternoon drama today AT.
Gorgeous space William! And I love the pictures, very fun.
wow...who knew a toilet with a women on it would offend some much.
at first i didn't care for it either just because i don't care to see anyone on a toilet.....but now that i see so many people actually OFFENDED....i have decided that i like the photo after all....LIGHTEN UP people.
i agree with the other poster....i want to see a nude dude steppinf outta the shower...THAT would be awesome!
thumbs up!
dflebut--
Nice try, trying to capture the Gleek vote* for your significant 1, but there's no way, logistically, you can see the TV from the commode.
Had there been, we would have had a winner!
*and the pervy vote for the sans robe comment. Which makes your target audience roast-eating-pervy-Gleeks. Yay! I'm in!
Gorgeous. Ah, welcome to the 19th century, commenters.
Even without the toilet picture-I don't like it.
Dear Sixx - Just to set the record straight this apartment is very different from others in the building. You can see the apartment immediately above mine (same line) here:
http://www.flatironre.com/property_detail.php?primaryKey=1710
This is a pre-war building, not one of those mass produced prestigious developments of luxury condominiums. Every surface I put in is simple raw material: textured wall paper, clear glass tile in the bath room (the photos make it look green but it is clear glass), aluminum kitchen cabinets, character walnut floor with simple tung oil finish.
w
My compliments, William, and apologies. Wish I could see more pictures.
LOL @ GeeBee40
I'm more bothered that you're wasting water by have the shower running for the picture... :(
*having
DEAR GOD I wish those objecting to the objectors would ease up on the "conservative, square state, prudish, religious right" crap.
I am NONE of the above. But I don't really care to see a stranger peeing.
Well, a FEMALE stranger peeing, in a home design contest.
At an adjoining urinal at the Eagle, different story.
William (the liar), should we assume you're telling the truth? :)
American people is hypocrit.
"Good taste and good sense" for americans is mid-century-in-blue-blue-and-maroon...... ARGH !!!
Forget that woman !!!
THE APARTMENT IS GORGEOUS !!!
Envy kills... kkkkkkkkkk
WILLIAM, I wanna sleep in your new sofa... ;-P
Okay, the furniture and art are all the wrong scale for an other-wise drop-dead gorgeous space. It looks like they ran out of money post-construction, and after the TV was delivered, and dumpster-dove and Etsy-ed their way to a completed space.
Happy now?
I agree with nilia. I'm uncomfortable with a partially undressed woman being used as a design element. People use their pets that way in this contest and I think it's cute, but your girlfriend is not your pet, not even when posed on the toilet wearing stilettos.
As to the apartment itself, I like your color sense. Those yellows and blues are the key to my heart. The overall aesthetic does not seem to be to my taste, but I would need to see the new furniture in it to really make a thoughtful judgement of your place. Also, now I kinda want a swiveling tv in the middle of my apartment too.
Hi William,
Thank you for the update, my mistake for assuming.
While I appreciate the thought and use of materials in this apartment, I still cannot give you my vote. The contest is for Small apartments, hence people that have to be creative with the living space that fits their budget. I much more appreciate a unique aesthetic and creative storage solutions that are inspirational to those of us who cannot afford raw material.
Best of luck,
Sixx
Perhaps you should have waited a year before posting your apartment in the contest. I, for one, would have appreciated your space more if the your L-shaped couch and huge dining room table and chairs were already in place.
Plus, your girlfriend may have been off the toilet by then.
patrick..you are a prude!
I wish all the puritanical types here would be quiet..so what if a womans on the shitter? get over it and go make some comments over on hustler.com
There's nothing sexy about taking a dump. However, the toilet is probably more comfortable than the living room bench.
I remember this apartment from Small Space Big Style on HGTV. I really miss that show...
I thought this was a comment list @ yahoo for a second. Didn't realize so many feminazis liked to force their values here. If you don't like it don't vote for it. No reason to call the owner tasteless. It's not like his friend is chained to the toilet. She had to have agreed with the taking the shot. 2 thumbs up for the space also.
what a douchebag photo.
Not taking the bait, Mikey. You'll just have to play with yourself.
Pun intended.
William, why didnt you use more recent pics? Would like to see in its current state per your comments on the changes since you took the pics.
She's sitting on the only comfortable piece of furniture in the entire apartment...
I love the layout & floors - Like the bathroom (sans Fraulein) and appreciate the storage wall and the curtains surrounding the sleeping platform...
...but this place really lacks warmth and personality.
Love the curtains; the area seems like a stage and has a dramatic style that's a little humorous.
Bed curtain makes it feel like a semiprivate hospital room, to me.
Whether this is considered a small space appropriate for the AT contest or not is really a non-issue. There's nothing to distinguish rentail apartments from owned apartments, either. 800 sq ft is 800 sq ft, and how "small" it is depends on where you're coming from. Those living in 5000 sq ft house would find this space small; those currently inhabiting 270 sq ft would find it massive. Just because it's very open and airy with high ceilings, and not 100 sq ft in someone's basement, doesn't mean it doesn't qualify.
I find the images too stylized personally, as if they were photoshopped. Apart from the apartment itself -- which is actually quite gorgeous -- it seems as though very little has been done with the actual space (furniture arrangement, artwork, colour, etc.) It feels very unfinished, which could be why it appears cold to some people. To boot, the space is very stark, what with the white walls and strong bursts of colour.
I thought it was cool but seriously don't want to see anyone taking a crap - ever - let alone letting someone snap a picture of me on the can - ugh class up
the chick on the toilet isn't the problem. it's the fact that it appears like she's still wearing bottoms AND has panties around her ankles. i feel a little cheated.
but though this is totally not my style, i am loving how spacious 800 sq ft looks. the pops of color are just right and the bathroom is gorgeous. thumbs up.
dude, why do you want to win a shopping spree in NYC? you already live there and obviously have loads of cash. give us broke people a chance! cool place though
i really hope i wouldnt have to take a crap if i was at a dinner party here
Personally, the thing I like least about the place (other than the furniture, which has apparently\thankfully been changed) is the two entrances to the bathroom as they are. Having a door that gets wet all the time? People walking through the shower to get to the bathroom? That doesn't seem very safe. Between the possible water on the floor, the trip hazard of the lip, and that nice piece of glass that extends about halfway in front of the door. People walk into screen doors and sliding glass door.. I can see someone smacking right into that thing. I think one entrance would've been fine, and not made a waste of the space to the right of the kitchen cabinets.
Otherwise.. love the materials, the storage.. dig the bedroom curtains. wish we could see the new furniture.
oh.. and lepidoptery -- the plan is so confusing because it's got a ceiling plan superimposed on the floor plan.. the AB CD markings indicate locations of section drawings, not ducks. :D
i love the open space, it's not for me, but i did a modern homes tour and saw a few like this where there weren't any doors anywhere! people are complaining about the seating but i've sat on some uncomfortable looking chairs that turned out to be amazingly comfortable. i think for what the owner wanted to achieve it works. modern. also, iffff i had a bed that was that big and looked that comfy and a tv that could swivel 360 degrees, i wouldn't NEED a couch now would i?
funny, the 4th photo elicited no reaction from me, no chuckles or anything else but the comments sure did! and..i dun see any man in a tutu or any ducks..
i'm living in a 1200 sq ft place and to some that's not big..but 800 sounds small to me!
i can't believe how rude some of you are..would you say any of these things to someone in person? REAL people live here. they are sharing themselves by opening up their personal lives and their homes to complete strangers to critique on the internet. so SERIOUSLY?
TabithaL There is no glass panel in the bath room. It is all open. No, water does not splash everywhere.
i've never seen so many responses... perhaps that was the point?
that shot takes all the attention away from that beautiful space
which made me think: a beautiful woman on a toilet doesn't offend me, but a beautiful man would be gross
Double standard, party of one, your table is ready.
Beautiful apartment. You clearly had a substantial budget to work with. I do like it, but it's definitely trendy and a little short on personality and character. And showing off that you have a hot girlfriend on an apartment design contest entry? That just seems sad and insecure.
I'd read the comments before looking at the photos. I expected to be offended since I'm usually on the squeamish side of the culture wars. However, although it's not my cup of tea, the picture of the woman on the toilet is, at worst, insignificant. I almost envy those so sheltered that such silliness is upsetting.
How did I miss this one? Am as liberal as they come, but using a woman for shock value, set decoration, whatever, is both desperate and a little sleazy. Add to that the fact that AT is probably over 50% women and gay men, and William is playing the wrong card. In a vaguely sexist manner. With an "I'm-too-sexy-for-my-apartment" entry. How do you say, meh?
Also, add me to the list of those surprised that people slamming those put off by the toilet photo can't grasp the difference between being offended because one's a prude and being annoyed because one's shown something classless. Spare us your judgment (and stupid toilet pics).
Everything I wanted to say has already been said by 'shanalulu'.
@shanalulu - Do you think William really thought that that stupid toilet pic was sexy and would win him points? I would have thought that it was just puerile potty humor and, although non-graphic, indeed classless.
I've been called prudish many times. I think that prudishness per se is merely unfashionable, not bad. It's become such an insult because it's confused with intolerance and prejudice, which definitely are bad.
I had no negative feelings about photo 4 or anyone who objected. Not my taste- moving on.
I try to picture myself in the space when deciding whether to give these spaces thumbs up. I pictured myself wandering from room to room trying in vane to find a comfortable spot. A don't think it's good enough to say that these pictures were taken BEFORE the space was comfortable and had appropriate furniture. This layout is what I have to judge your space on. Based on these photos, it's just not doing it for me.
@TabithaL
Well, I was joking about the ducks you know! But, er. what is a section drawing, assuming that's a technical term?
Golly – these comments are so funny with their moral indignation. The photo is cheeky, (she is cleverly masked where it matters) and appropriate to illustrate the highly stylised space and the 'open' bathing space idea which is a key design feature (and for those that are so confused the plan clearly shows the bathroom can be closed off with the sliding doors at each end). The environment created here is stunning; spacious, beautifully finished, challenges normal expectations of domestic environments and is an intelligent solution to a difficult small space.
I as a straight woman still likes looking at other beautiful women, naked or not or partially clothed or not, as long as it is a beautiful sight, artsy or not. I don't see that in the women/toilet pic! While it "could" be a great photo for some exhibition, personally i really don't think it belongs here. The place is good. That pic is a bit much for me. Not seeing any beauty in it. But I have to give kudos to some commenters seeing the humors in that pic... haha!
"OMG! I have that same woman in my Bathroom! I found mine at HomeGoods, where did you find yours??" GeebBee40
"The peeing woman is practicing the beloved AT premise of Keep Calm and Carry On" typicalguineapig
BTW, don't call fellow commenters "morality squad" or some names just because they are offended by the photos. Nobody here is calling those who LOVED the phtos "liberal idiots" or "anything does weirdos" or "morality desserters". Respect other's opinions. It is a scary place when you start doing those. Some people do have different standards. Going with the most liberal views do not make you better.
when i go to the bathroom, i flex my leg muscles and pose. there's never a wrong time to look sexy.
