Who Lives Here: Yuka Location: Midtown West, NYC Size: 400 square feet
What is your favorite element of your Small & Cool home? I instantly fell in love with the bay window because it makes the entire place feel light and airy, almost as though I'm living in a green house.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your Small Cool home? With such a small place, I had to find furniture that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. I found some great cabinets that provide plenty of storage and separate the kitchen from the rest of the apartment. With room to keep my belongings out of sight, I feel that the place appears larger and is roomy enough to invite friends over for dinner parties.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I envy the floor and the view! I love the touches of pink, as well.
Really dig those floors.
Wow! Those windows! The herringbone floors! Wonderful! And I love a place that takes on a different life at night. The aesthetic changes - Very sophisticated at night.
How do you find the pull-out-bed life?
Is it a fun daily ceremony, or something you resent? Just curious.
I wonder that more people in teeny tiny spaces don't have sofa beds. I lived in a studio apartment eons ago with a sofa bed and loved it. I would have felt uncomfortable having company over and sitting on or near my bed.
I wonder if she ever comes home drunk and is like "Shhiiiiiiiiii I have to pull my bed out, urrrghhh."
Lovely apartment, does anyone know where I could get those cushions?
When I came to the pic. of the bay window, I just gasped, wow, how I would love that. Nice use of space, and as an expert 'NON' cook I like the small kitchen.
what's up with all you guys and your fantastic bay windows? it makes me so jealous.
Wow! is all I can say.
I very rarely comment here at AT, but I just had to in this case. I am absolutely in love with your place. Fantastic windows, view and use of space. I love how you appear to have kept your bay area uncluttered with just the bar table to really preserve and be able to savor your view rather than feeling as though you have to fill it with "stuff". Just beautiful!
I would sell my soul for that view and those windows.
To aaakid when you have a sofa bed people are sitting on and near your bed. But I get what you are saying.
Beautiful place... Love it!
Great use of the limited space, and the layout of furnitures complements the great windows and the view. My 900sq.ft room even looks smaller...
When I lived in a studio apartment, many years ago, I was just like Yuka. I couldn't imagine having a bed in the middle of my apartment, so I slept on a pullout. When I wasn't sleeping, my studio looked like a really nice living room, as does Yuka's.
Flash forward to the present, when I'm seeing all of these gorgeous studio apartment on AT, with big queen size beds right in full view, I look back on my early days and think I got it all wrong. Obviously, it can be done both ways, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd have a bed. I really missed that. All I thought about was the day I could afford a bigger place. And my apartment, by the way, was beautiful; there was no reason for me to feel like I was missing out on something. There's nothing wrong with a bed in a studio, as long as it's done right--and this contest has many examples of that.
That being said, Yuka, you have a lovely, lovely apartment: grownup, sophisticated, stylish. I'm just looking back on the old days and thinking that I could have saved myself a lot of bedtime trouble if I'd only had a site like AT for some small space inspiration!
I had a sofa bed in a studio too. They aren't as nice as a private full time bedroom, but I prefer it to having my bed out in plain sight. Plus it's more comfortable (to me, at least) to actually SIT on a sofa and not on a bed, and in my place, that's all there was. (No room for chairs.)
As studios go, this one is gorgeous -- both the existing space and the decor!
Very nicely done and what a view!
I like! Where did you find those ottomans?
holy moly, those windows. Love.
I love that you have a sofa bed. As a follow sofa bed-sleeper (and somebody who hates having to make their bed), I think it is hands down the best solution for a studio. (There are some really comfortable options, I have Ikea's Manstad and I'm completely and utterly in love with it.)
i really like the multi-uses you get from the sofa and footrests/coffee tables. the one thing that is puzzling to me is that with the height of the dining table , isn't your view blocked when sitting on the couch? I would think you wouldn't want it blocked so you could enjoy that fab view.
i love sofa beds. they've come so far...have one from american upholster and it's quick and simple to open/close. AND comfortable to boot! i'd rather sleep on that than my own bed!
Love everything about this.
Gorgeous! Such great ideas!
Who makes your bar table? I love it.
I love that you put a lot of flowers and greens!
One of my faves so far. Gorgeous!
Great idea to simply put bar table near huge bay window. Unless seeing the floor plan, tough to tell it's studio!
Nicely done. It is simple but really works!
I love everything about this room! So nice!!!
such a great use of space!
Gorgeous. I generally have a strong negative response to pink/fuchsia/purple, but not here, and that view is insane. Whole place is. Very nice.
Framed art over TV: bearskin rugs? Ha.
I love your place! This totally looks like something I would do as our styles are very similar! I love your idea of using two storage ottomans instead of a standard coffee table in the center of the room. It's very practical for a small living space .. I think I may copy this!
Thank you very much for your comments and votes.

I chose the sofa bed and think it's fine to pull out. Also, I have futon in closet, so I can use whichever I feel most comfortable with.

Cushions are from Jonathan Adler a few years ago.
cbeatty23-
Ottomans are from Design Within Reach which can be used as storage or converted to a stool when I turn over the top.
Hiwelder-
Actually, I was concerned about the blocking the view when I bought the bar, but it's worked out great. I use the bar as dining table and desk, and I think that the inside and outside views from different levels are a kind of fun. For example, sitting on the bar stool, I have a full 180-degree view of my neighborhood.

The bar is from CB2

Let me use one word which I've just learnt to express my feeling at the moment I saw these photos.
"COOL!"
LOVE! Awesome view, awesome window, great style.
I love the floorplan and layout- you really lucked out, what a great space!
Oh, so AWESOME!!
Loving the day/night contrast!
The view and the floors are totally worth it. Lovely.
totally love this - my fav so far!!!
I like use of the color.....simple and girly at the same time.
Love the colors. And omigosh those windows!
Love the interior design!
Fantastic use of a fantastic space. Imagining how great it must be to lie in bed with those windows and view.
nice paintings
sigh..those windows, you are so so lucky. Loving the day and night contrast too. Excellent job!!
Where are the pillows and throw from?
OMG! The lamp! Where is the lamp from?
Sweet. Those views are amazing! Where's the bath pic? Love the island and the use of the space for sitting at the end..jealous of that view..still jealous...
DNBursky-
The pink pillows and throw are from Jonathan Adler and the brown pillows are from Calypso Home.

I got the floor lamp from Craigslist. I think it's from West Elm.

I couldn’t upload all of the pictures I took of the apartment. There are bathroom photos that I didn’t submit.
When you have someone over to eat, I hope you give them the seat with the view! Love the place, and would love to know aobut the chairs at the bar (i.e. source, and are they comfy? always hard to tell w/ bar stools...)
Kushkush-
Thanks. Guests are always treated to the swivel chair and it helps with taking in the view. They are Calligaris’ from Jensen-Lewis and I spent a lot of time to find them. I actually preferred the style of their “Even” barstool, but I got the “Icon” as it’s more comfortable. Also, I’m short so the adjustable height feature has been handy. And the foot rest is in right spot.
hi yuka! I love what you've done with the place! I have a similar floorplan and I just moved into my place and trying to look at different ways to position my furniture and such. Quick question - Was your kitchen and the rest of the area an open layout? Or is that a closet in picture 1 with the mirror - and you used this to separate kitchen from the rest of the living area? If so, where did you buy it and does it go all the way to the ceiling? Do you think you can email me more pics? Thanks so much!
