Yesterday being Easter, many people spent hours cooking in their large or small kitchens. We have a galley kitchen, which at times we find very unpractical. However, when we see just how little square footage some kitchens have to work with and how beautiful the kitchens look, we are awestruck.
Let us know…if your kitchen is small, what solutions have you implemented for making the most out of the given square footage?

I've seen #5 a few times, but it's beauty always takes me aback. I love the color and elegance. I would so happily have that kitchen. I don't know that I'd consider #8 small, but it is beautiful. I like the floor in #9.
#5 is an inspiration! We're getting ready to renovate our small galley kitchen, and I really like the dark lower cabinets w/ white uppers. We're planning to remove all the uppers on one side of the kitchen and relocate the fridge to just outside the "triangle", to cut down on the congestion. I'd really like to know what the floor is in #5. There's no mention of it in the link.
I love #9. The featured kitchens do not look so small to me. They're all bigger than mine! I live in New York...
I suppose these aren't big kitchens, but for the most part they look so efficient that I don't think of them as small. Very cool.
These are NOT small kitchens!! OK, maybe the first one...but they all have ample storage and dishwashers, and many even have eating areas--things a genuinely small kitchen (like mine :) does not.
i second that, cashew... smart design can give the illusion of more space... my first impression of these kitchens was "great", not "small"
Oh, I love some of these, particularly the turquoise and black one. But several do not look even a bit small to me.
I agree 100% that a small kitchen is great if it is designed well. We just remodeled our kitchen and took advantage of the two dead blind corners, ran the cabinets up to the ceiling, and pushed the over-fridge cabinet forward so you could actually reach it. We basically doubled our storage space even after taking down a wall of upper cabinets.
#4 is definitely a small kitchen. It is 6' x 9'. Although many people have even smaller kitchens, 6x9 is not a large space.
I thought I was being too critical when I felt the same about how some of these do not consider small. Glad I'm not the only one.
Maybe, AT can run a thread about tiny kitchens..?
I'm lusting after #1.
Ha! These kitchens are not small. Or at least only a couple of them are. Until you've lived in an apartment in New York where you have to climb inside the refrigerator to get things out b/c the refrigerator door can't fully extend you do not know small.
As others have said, these kitchens are not small at all. They're all bigger than my kitchen, and I thought my kitchen was pretty big for a small LA apartment.
#1 seems to be the true efficient kitchen with the smaller range. Curious to know what the window looks out onto...so much natural light! I like #9 for tile and SS work, look so polished and clean.
Mine is #8 and I never considered it a small kitchen:)
I guess it's small if you can't fit the fancy island:) I actually miss my old kitchen that was a lot smaller!
I have a small kitchen as well and totally agree...these are not small. Nevertheless I'm liking #5, it's just...cool.
can we have a post that is 10 of our favorite small and awkwardly shaped kitchens? maybe that one will help me. the "small" ones never really do....
I would take #1 over any of the larger kitchens any day. What I wouldn't give to have a kitchen with a window!
It also doesn't hurt that the apartment is located in Sweden...
I think what's in question here is the idea of small. Small can be a lot of different things; such as amount of working space, the size of appliances that will fit into the room, the total square footage or in comparison to the rest of the house or what you are accustom to. So each picture could define a different type of "small". I feel claustrophobic in a galley kitchen (no matter how it's arranged). Great examples, Marcia, of "small" kitchens.
Oh, how I long for a kitchen as small --and as fantastic-- as these...
I had the same reaction as many commentators--most of these aren't all that small. Personally, part of my definition of small involves what percentage of floor space disappears when you open up the oven (or dishwasher if you have one). That's about 40% of my floor space.
But these are beautiful and most seem well laid out. I have a sort-of-galley kitchen in my rental, and I wish I could do a few things shown in these pictures. It's sort of like the Andreas layout, except instead of being all in a line, the stove and frig are turned 90 degrees inward to make a U. It sounds more efficient, but it means dead space in the corners and less floor space.
Huh. I guess by this logic, I have a small kitchen. To be fair, I'm not trying to host a Michelin rated restaurant in my home. This strikes me as a bit out of touch AT.
Small is relative. My 9x12 kitchen is considered small where I live, but it's larger than some other kitchens.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association defines a small kitchen as being 150 sq. ft. or less.
Again, it's all relative.
I think my kitchen is about half the size of any of these and completely lacking in the cabinets and shelves area. Also pretty limited counterspace. I love it though! It works just fine with two amateur chefs in the house, especially with all the windows and the back patio out the door.
Never thought my kitchen as (very) small, until I read this post.
Anyway, I do use an open plan and white color for my kitchen to make it appear bigger than it is.
We're renovating our kitchen and the footprint is 8.3 feet by 5.6 feet. Its tough!
Absolutely love #5! Pantone did reveal that turquoise is the color of 2010, and our Chief Home Design Officer says "don't underestimate the color of turquoise in the kitchen!"

Are you kidding me? Most of these kitchens are not small--and I don't live in New York. I would kill to have this much counter space!
Ditto! Some of these kitchens aren't small at all. Beautiful, yes.
These kitchens are beautiful. However my kitchen is a small enclosed 6'x12' box with two doorways. I'd love to see some budget friendly ideas on how to squeeze out some more functionality.
Try under-counter appliances – such as a fridge, washer/dryer.
Portable stovetops can be stored when not in use.
Stackable pans, dry goods and a utensil basket fit in a single cupboard.
For additional counter space, place a large cutting board over the sink.
Try a pull-out cutting board.
These kitchens are not small. Maybe #7 is.
