How people handle their small kitchens varies, of course, according to taste and space. Some favor painting kitchens a vibrant or rich color, taking advantage of the small area as an opportunity for an accent. Others keep the walls and cabinets white, but include dashes of color for interest and liveliness.
Perhaps the most crucial element of the small kitchen is the careful editing of objects and appliances. This can be practical not only because storage space is limited, but because in many small kitchens, stored objects are visible, becoming part of the decor as well as functional tools for living. Many of the small kitchens pictured use clever storage solutions like magnetic strips for knives, hanging pot racks, and wall hooks for everything from mugs to stirring spoons to bowls.
Here is a range of small kitchen inspiration from the Apartment Therapy community in 2010. Which are your favorite storage solutions? And which approach do you prefer, white with accents or color color color?

For historical small kitchen inspiration, check out the Frankfurt Kitchen from 1926, whose efficient use of space was inspired by the dining cars in railway trains. White Enamel Four-P...
Inspiring - really enjoyed these!
Love them all--supercute...but my heart stopped when I saw guitars in the kitchen. They were beautiful, but the constantly changing temps and humidity in there are going to leave you with 2 instruments good for nothing BUT art! Ouch.
Uh-oh! Loose fabric and a gas range is asking for trouble.
A couple of these make me feel like a giant looking in through the kitchen window of a doll house.
a few look big to me:). For me the winner is the first one, simply because it fits with how I operate, I can see how different the needs and solutions are. Anything can be made to work may be the moral. Smaller can mean everything you need is handier! My big yen is always for counterspace. A butcher block cut to fit over the tiny stove was a lifesaver for me in one tiny NY "kitchen". Usually it lived and worked on the counter I had, but when prep got busy/elaborate/messy I was able to double my workspace.
Hope to see a piece on the no-kitchen solutions... I'm pretty smug about how I'm managing at the moment in my truly live/work space with two hotplates (Best Chef, cheap and work the best, boil water plenty fast) a toaster oven (again the cheaper Black and Decker outperforms its tonier competition), and the janitor sink (big thank god) down the hall (think two spray bottles, one soapy, one just plain water and paper towels to keep things clean in the cookspace) and a small fridgie. It has worked out swell.
Lovely, all.
Am I the only one who wants to turn those knives in #12 so the sharps point down???
Kinda bummed tho overall. Here I thought all the AT house tours were the real deal. I guess it's coincidence that the four plates in #2 are the EXACT SAME ONES that are in "Jessie's Vintage Modern Bungalow" in the post which followed this one?
Don't get me wrong...I enjoy the *staged* photos as well as the *real life* ones. Inspiration in ANY form is always good. I just don't care to be duped. It's a matter of integrity.
Being one to always give the benefit of doubt here, I'd like to see an explanation...
They're a mass production item. Do a google search for 'gothic salad plate'. It's not surprising to see the exact same four seeing as they're sold as a set.
I never had trouble with a gas range and dish towels.
I love them all, but the all feature the two things my kitchen does not have. Windows and white cabinets.
I agree with pointing the knives down. I don't think it really makes a difference safety wise, I just prefer the look.
Nice storage solutions!

I love the first and the fourth.
All but one have white cabinets. I'm looking for ideas of what color to paint the cabinets in my small kitchen...does anyone do anything but white??
greeeeaaaaatttt..now i hate my kitchen...thanks..;)
I love seeing the IKEA kitchen wall solutions in action! http://chiclittleme.blogspot.com
They all have their own personality but I'd go with 9 and 15. Less is more, I would throw a red Dansk pot on that stove (15) for a pop of color.
Oh my gosh I want to do this in my apartment, I wonder how much trouble I'd get in if I repainted the doors and put new handles on them.....

I like some of the ideas here. The lighter colors really help to make the space look better. The use of the butcher block cut to fit over the stove or sink is something I recommend to my clients also in a very small kitchen. This really helps increase you’re much needed counter space. I have a small kitchen and now also design small kitchens in NY so I appreciate your ideas. These days it is very easy to get very narrow wall cabinets maybe 6 inches deep to put on any open walls which will hide a lot of small stuff without taking up too much space. http://www.designsmallkitchens.com
