I love dark floors - they are so luxurious! Light floors are inviting but I like the drama of dark floors!
It really depends on your furnishings and how they compliment or contrast with the flooring. It's hard to single out just the floors. I opted for a very pale bamboo flooring in my condo. I love it!
Since I am a huge fan of Scandanavian decor, I love light floor. I wish I can paint all my floor white.
I prefer dark floors- they make the space feel more grounded, and (I think) add a sense of drama that can otherwise be missing in a small space.
I vote for "medium floor" like Tamar's. Or maybe I just like wood tones.
I have a small condo which originally had a light floor, which I didn't particularly like; then there was a water "incident" and the floor had to be replaced. I opted for a dark floor and I LOVE it more than I would have thought possible. Everyone who sees it comments on how awesome the floor is.
I actually preferred the decor in most of the "light" entry rooms, but think it would have looked much better with dark wood floors underneath.
There are beautiful floors in light and in dark. Then there are ugly floors in every possible barfy hue. I care less for whether it is light or dark than whether it is beautiful or ugly.
This is in regards to WOODEN floors: One of the challenges I have with my apartment is that the wood floors are such a light brown, I have a hard time making things coordinate. I feel like if the floors were darker, things would coordinate/pop more.
I found out that light wood does not show every dog hair like darker wood does. Although my normal preference would be medium dark wood (reddish) I currently love blond wood for the above-mentioned reason.
I love the look of a dark floor with light walls. As others have said, it grounds a small space and gives it weight. But I also totally love the Swedish bleached-floor look. My least favorite is actually the medium oak tone, which is what I have in my prewar rental. Ah well, someday...
I LOVE light floors. I had them in my apartment in Denmark, and they were kind of whitewashed wood. I had to use a special milky soap on them once a week that dried to a chalky white. They were beautiful and I always thought I'd try to recreate that when I owned my own home.
Lo and behold, once I bought a house and started bringing wood samples home, I found the really dark ones just looked much righter in this place. They went better with the furniture, the curtains, the transitions to the tiled areas, and meant we wouldn't have to paint the lovely dark wooden trim white. I still dream of another house with pale floors for future me, though.
Dark floors, white walls.
Dark floors and light walls. Love the crisp contrast, and since the dark color recedes the dark floors make the room look bigger/spacious.
Both of the above. It really is situational.
