Creating a lighting plan for a small space can be quite a challenge. In a room where surface and floor space is at a premium, it can be hard to find spots for lamps and other indirect lighting options. But we love this clever way of mixing pendant lamps at different heights, creating an eclectic look along with a pleasant overhead glow.

The images above, from Ikea Family LIVE, are from a sweet little Berlin apartment where the lighting has clearly been installed with care. The couple seems to subscribe to the notion that one can never have too many lamps. And the effect is cozy and warm, making the small-ish space feel intimate rather than cramped.
Try choosing pendant lamps of different textures and sizes and hanging them at different heights to create depth and interest. This also creates a layered light source with a softer effect than a single flat overhead fixture. In the apartment pictured, the couple combines pendant lighting with table and floor lamps, along with task-appropriate wall-mounted lighting. The interplay of all three types of light is what really brings the space alive.
Have you tried a mix-and-match look with pendant lamps? Do tell!

Barneys New York CO-OP at The Grove in Los Angeles has/had 3 pendants over their shoe area that I loved. They were colorful, Moroccan-style lamps hung over a circular area (great for over a round table) at 3 differing heights. Don't know if that particular display is still up, but it was gorgeous. Maybe someone has a picture....
This pic LOOKS cluttered, but the feng shui FEELS really warm and inviting to me. I love it!
A new idea for me. It does look cosy and interesting with the different pendants grouped together. We haven't had very good luck with our art deco pendant lights. Three little boys and one tall husband have ensured that most of them have met with unfortunate accidents. Most are just reproductions so no big deal but one was an original. *sob*
A cafe around the corner from my apartment has lots of Tom Dixon pendants in different shapes, sizes and heights. It's a really cool effect.

I'm obsessed with that cozy little corner. I want a chalkboard wall, and benches, and pillows, and a little table, and a bunch of cool pendant lamps. I want that corner!
Are they all hardwired to the same... thing that you hardwire things to?
Meteor Lights has options for either plugged-in swag or hardwired pendant lamps in different small shapes, sizes, and colors. The pendant lamp shades are in the retro 50s style, but they'll work in a lot of modern and contemporary settings (especially considering how much of contemporary lighting design is influenced by mid-century modern design): http://www.meteorlights.com/pendants.htm
