If desired, the curtains on the built-in bookcases can be pulled shut to eliminate visual clutter. Also, the bookcase curtains have exactly the same treatment as the window curtains, providing continuity throughout the space.
Both continuity and elimination of visual clutter can help small spaces seem less crowded. And it's a great way to add storage without necessarily putting it on display. This same idea could translate from book shelves to a pantry shelf housing all of your dish- and cookware, to clothing storage in a closetless bedroom, or to A/V storage in the living room.

Just to clarify: I wrote my "agree" comment before rexrayfan's comment had appeared. I was agreeing with leehou.
I don't like the curtains in that case, probably just because everything on the shelf looks so curated. If the shelves were stuffed with kids' toys or clothes or something, I could see hiding them behind a curtain. That's what I did with my doorless closet in my freshman dorm. But the shelves look nice, and in this case I think a closed curtain over those shelves would look kind of stilted and forced.
It reminds me of when I go into someone's bathroom. If they have the shower curtain closed, I assume their tub is dirty.
I'm not fond of this look. It is way to formal for me.
However, those sconces above the fireplace have really caught my attention. They would be perfect above my fireplace. Anyone know where I can find similar fixtures?
I think this only works because the draperies over the bookcases are a continuation of the window treatments - exactly the same hardware, details, etc. - and because the shelves are built-ins.
This would not work with freestanding bookcases, nor with draperies that were not consistent throughtout the room.
Of course it works. Of course the room is lovely. Of course, the room is styled; Barry is an interior designer. He doesn't get paid the big bucks to throw together rooms that look like college dorms furnished from thrift stores. Although his style is very different from mine, I really like his work. The Met Home room is very interesting.
Well styled drapery treatments, blinds, doors and even screens are an excellent tool for true book lovers to live in decluttered space while keeping there beloved tomes close at hand.
