Trying to fit many pieces of furniture in a small bedroom can be a big challenge. As with most small spaces, it is best to utilize the vertical space. Highboy dressers are generally less than 36" wide, but make up for storage space in their height. Even if you can fit all your clothes in the closet, it is always helpful to have extra storage space.

The 6 drawer Chase dresser at World Market is great, too. It provides lots of storage in narrow spaces and is well constructed. It actually looks a lot like the West Elm dresser but only costs $300. I loved mine. I bet you could change out the hardware pretty easily.

My 6'6" husband is very happy we have tall dressers - no bending or stooping for him! We're very happy with our Mission style furniture - it's classic and there's no wasted space - very helpful in a compact room.
I have an old 1960s Bassett which is really nice, not too high, and fairly wide. for $200 it was a great find, and I haven't had to tighten a single thing.
